FRANCE 1938

WOZA SA 2010 WOZA
WORLD CUP REVIEW:

FRANCE 1938

The Third World Cup was held in France in 1938 thanks mainly to Jules Rimet the Frenchman who was instrumental in getting the tournament started 8 years ago. Argentina were very confident that the World Cup would be held by them due to one World Cup being held in Europe and one in South America as well as World War II tensions rising high in Europe, but it went to France. This caused Argentina to pull out of the World Cup. The tournament was in the same format as Italy 1934 Straight Knockout to the finals. The tournament had only 15 teams due to Austria’s withdrawal because of the Anschluss to Germany in March. Out of the 15 participating Nations 12 were from Europe 2 from South America being Brazil, Cuba, and the Dutch East Indies from Asia (Known as Indonesia today).

Round 1
Well with only 15 teams in this tournament 1 lucky team would draw a bye in the first round and that would be Sweden. Germany and Switzerland played to a 1-1 draw in the opening match and Switzerland won the replay 4-2. Cuba also needed a replay to beat Romania 2-1 after a 3-3 draw. Czechoslovakia beat Holland 3-0 with Nejedley scoring in his 2nd World Cup tournament and the hosts France beat Belguim 3-1. Hungary hammered the Dutch East Indies 6-0 and defending champions Italy needed extra time to beat Norway 2-1. Brazil beat Poland 6-5 after Extra Time. Brazilian Superstar Leonidas scored a hatrick in reply to a World Cup Record set by Poland’s Willimowski who scored 4 goals in a single game and ended up on the losing team.
Quarter-Finals

Holders Italy vs Hosts France. Italy’s coach Vitorrio Pozzo made his team wear a Full Black Strip in support of Italy’s and Mussolini’s Fascist Ruling Style. Italy won 3-1. The 2nd Quarterfinal saw Sweden’s blast Cuba 8-0. Wetterstrom and Keller both scored hatricks. Hungary beat Switzerland 2-0 and Brazil needed a replay to beat Czechoslovakia 2-1 after a very heated 1-1 draw in which 3 players were Dismissed, 2 from Brazil and 1 from the Czech’s. Czech Captain & Keeper Planicka broke his right arm but continued playing and star striker Nejedly broke his right leg and hence left the pitch. 3 Brazilians including Leonidas also left the pitch during play because of injury. This game is known as the ‘Battle of Bordeaux’ and was one of the most brutal games of World Cup history. Brazils Leonidas scored in both games. (Picture of star Czech Goal Keeper Planicka saving a Brazilian attack in the first match)

Semi-Finals
Italy managed to beat Brazil 2-1 thanks again to Guiseppe Meazza who scored Italy’s second goal. However Brazilian Coach Ademar Pimenta strangely left out star player Leonidas in order to rest him for the final. Brazil did not reach the final. Hungary blasted Sweden 5-1 thanks to a Zsengeller hatrick to join Italy.
Third Place Playoff
Brazil beat Sweden 4-2 to finish 3rd with Leonidas, this time playing, again scoring twice to be the leading goal scorer of the World cup with 7 goals.

Final
Well for the first time we had a nation defending the World Cup. Italy had done a great job so far having reached the finals. This time their opponents were Hungary who had a moral boosting victory against Sweden in the semi-finals. Italy took the lead after just 6 minutes through Coloaussi but Hungary equalized immediately through Titkos. Silvio Piola Italy’s player of the tournament restored Italy’s lead 8 minutes later. Coloaussi scored a second 10 minutes from halftime to give Italy a 3-1 lead at the break. Italy played a solid defensive game after the break until Sarosi of Hungary broke through to get 1 goal back. But Piola made sure Italy become the first nation ever to successfully defend the FIFA World Cup title by scoring his second and Italy’s 4th. Italy became World Champions Again. Captain Guissepe Meazza (Photo Below) and Ferrara both won their second consecutive World Cup winners medals. Vitorrio Pozzo also won his second World Cup as Manager which is still a World Cup Record for a manager.

DID YOU KNOW?
World War II was in full swing and would prevent the FIFA World Cup from taking place until 1950. Mussolini’s Italy was at the centre of World War II. The Jules Rimet Trophy was hidden by Italian Vice-president of FIFA Dr. Ottorino Barassi in a shoe box under his bed. This saved the trophy falling into the hands of occupying troops and being lost.

MOMENT THAT SHOOK THE WORLD CUP!
Italy’s President Mussolini sent a telegram to the Italian players which read “Vincere o morire” directly translated as “Win or Die”. The entire world including Hungarian goalkeeper Antal Szabo was told of this terrifying telegram. Hungary lost the final to Italy letting in 4 goals. The Hungarian Goalkeeper Antal Szabo was quoted as saying “I may have let in 4 goals, but at least I saved their lives.” However “Vincere o morire” is translated directly as “Win or die” but in Italian Sports Vernacular it simply meant “Give it your all Guys”. Woops I wonder how Antal Szabo feels about it now.
WOZA 2010 WOZA will take a break for the next 2 Weeks as it is Holiday Season. This is a good time to a break as well because the FIFA World Cup did not take place for another 12 years due to World War II.
See you NEXT Year.

SUPER TUESDAY ON SWOOSH0018

I figured we might as well just jump into Super Tuesday. It was an actually relaxing weekend. I found myself learning the culture of Oman....maybe with a princess Rania lol.Anyways Sunday I spent at a beautiful farm on the Vaal.Beautiful Belissima. i came back and saw Juve demolish Milan.
Lets start with the EPL. Liverpool are still on top. No changes there. All the Big Guns drew. But for us though it is seen as points spilled away. In fact we were lucky had it not been for our Captain Fantastic Stevie G.As for Charagher, the debate remains...Is he shite. This in context of some footballers and Pundits rating him as Class. Hull , went two goals clear. I bet the Alis were laughing. Even though we managed a draw, to me it was two points lost again. So far all the points that we dropped we regret. On a positive, I got a call from Mams Wadee whilst he was on his way to Anfield. i eagerly await his feedback. He has got to experience Anfield
The MANCS drew against Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal all drew. So even Stevens. Great to see the MANCS dropping points so often. Something we have rarely seen. I didnt watch the Manc Game so Il let the comments do the talking.
Anelka however seems to be returning to the prolific striker he was for Arsenal
And now
JUVE VS MILAN
SHAKES, CISSE, What can you guys say. A great Juve performance and I was surprised myself to be honest. Alex Del Piero was again clinical from the spot to put Juve 1-0 ahead. Georgio Chielini who was almsot on his way to liverpool and Man Utd believe it or not put Juve 2-0 ahead. I was begining to worry when PATO got one back for Milan. But Amauri whom many Juve pundits dismissed as a Dud Signing put Juve a goal clear with a bullet Header. Amauri has been in riviting form of late. Ambrosini who I dont rate at all pulled one back for Milan. Perhaps Milan were missing the bite of Gatusso in Midfield. Look at momo Sissoko. The man was playing sh#@$ for liverpool now the Juve Forum dsescribes his performances as colossus for Juve. To end the sweet evening Amauri again put the result beyond doubt. So we leapfrog Milan but I must admit, Mourinhos Inter seemed destined for the Scudetto. I watched the highlights. Ibrahimovic was class on the Night. Two brilliant goals

BARCA WIN EL CLASSICO
What a Barcelona performance. Many pundits are touting them as the next European Champions. The Catalans are hailing Pep Guardiola as Senior Pep. Change was needed. This Derby is one of the biggest in Spain. The Merengues hate the Catalans. And the way Barcelona did it. As class as Cassilas is, he couldnt do anything. Barcelona are playing great football. And they have the firepower, Henry, Eto, Messi, Xavi, Borjan......
Even Pep Guardiola, ever the picture of humility, erupted into uninhibited celebration once he realised just what this victory meant for his side. They cruised through their Champions League group, and after an unremarkable start in the league, they began picking up successive wins before bursting into top gear and readily smashing four, five or even six past all comers. Then came tonight, the first game of their season that was not only big, but major, and though without doubt Madrid were under-strength and maybe the little things did go the way of the home side, they still won the day - and did so deservingly - what more can you ask?-goal.com
And when Barca countered with Messi, madrid were buried.

Fat Ronaldo or El Fenomino has quit Europe great stage and went to SA. This signals the end of a great career, perhaps remembered mainly for his World Cup Performances, Injuries and transvestites. I remember when Fat Ronaldo burst onto the scene for Barcelona and the goals he scored. Does the blog want to say something about the FAT MAN, Will he be missed. Was he class. Is it sad for Football

Why The West Craves Materialism & Why The East Sticks To Religion
By Imran Khan

My generation grew up at a time when colonial hang up was at its peak.
Our older generation had been slaves and had a huge inferiority complex of the British. The school I went to was similar to all elite schools in Pakistan.Despite gaining independent, they were, and still are, producing replicas of public schoolboys rather than Pakistanis.

I read Shakespeare, which was fine, but no Allama Iqbal - the national poet of Pakistan. The class on Islamic studies was not taken seriously, and when I left school I was considered among the elite of the country because I could speak English and wore Western clothes.

Despite periodically shouting 'Pakistan Zindabad' in school functions, I considered my own culture backward and religion outdated. Among our group if any one talked about religion, prayed or kept a beard he was immediately branded a Mullah.

Because of the power of the Western media, our heroes were Western moviestars or pop stars. When I went to Oxford already burdened with this hang up, things didn't get any easier. At Oxford, not just Islam, but all religions were considered anachronism.
Science had replaced religion and if something couldn't be logically proved it did not exist. All supernatural stuff was confined to the movies.
Philosophers like Darwin, who with his half-baked theory of evolution had supposedly disproved the creation of men and hence religion, were read andrevered.

Moreover, European history reflected its awful experience with religion. The horrors committed by the Christian clergy during the Inquisition era had left a powerful impact on the Western mind.

To understand why the West is so keen on secularism, one should go to places like Cordoba in Spain and see the torture apparatus used during the Spanish Inquisition. Also the persecution of scientists as heretics by the clergy had convinced the Europeans that all religions are regressive.

However, the biggest factor that drove people like me away from religion was the selective Islam practiced by most of its preachers. In short, there was a huge difference between what they practiced and what they preached.
Also, rather than explaining the philosophy behind the religion, there was an overemphasis on rituals.

I feel that humans are different to animals. While, the latter can be drilled, humans need to be intellectually convinced. That is why the Qur'an constantly appeals to reason. The worst, of course, was the exploitation of
Islam for political gains by various individuals or groups.
Hence, it was a miracle I did not become an atheist. The only reason why I did not was the powerful religious influence my mother wielded on me since my childhood. It was not so much out of conviction but love for her that
I stayed a Muslim.

However, my Islam was selective. I accepted only parts of the religion that suited me. Prayers were restricted to Eid days and occasionally on Fridays, when my father insisted on taking me to the mosque with him.

All in all I was smoothly moving to becoming a Pukka Brown Sahib. After all I had the right credentials in terms of school, university and, above all, acceptability in the English aristocracy, something that our brown sahibs would give their lives for. So what led me to do a 'lota' on the Brown Sahib culture and instead become a 'desi'?

Well it did not just happen overnight. Firstly, the inferiority complex that my generation had inherited
gradually went as I developed into a world-class athlete. Secondly, I was in the unique position of living between two cultures. I began to see the advantages and the disadvantages of both societies.
In Western societies, institutions were strong while they were collapsing in our country. However, there was an area where we were and still are superior, and that is our family life. I began to realize that this was
the Western society's biggest loss. In trying to free itself from the oppression of the clergy, they had removed both God and religion from their lives. While science, no matter how much it progresses, can answer a lot of
questions - two questions it will never be able to answer: One, what is the purpose of our existence and two, what happens to us when we die?

It is this vacuum that I felt created the materialistic and the hedonistic culture. If this is the only life then one must make hay while the sun shines - and in order to do so one needs money. Such a culture is bound to
cause psychological problems in a human being, as there was going to be an imbalance between the body and the soul.

Consequently, in the US, which has shown the greatest materialistic progress while giving its citizens numerous rights, almost 60 percent of the population consult psychiatrists. Yet, amazingly in modern psychology,
there is no study of the human soul. Sweden and Switzerland, who provide the mostwelfare to their citizens, also have the highest suicide rates. Hence, man is not necessarily content with material well being and needs something more.
Since all morality has it roots in religion, once religion was removed, immorality has progressively grown since the 70s. Its direct impact has beenon family life. In the UK, the divorce rate is 60 percent, while it is estimated that there are over 35 percent single mothers. The crime rate is rising in almost all Western societies, but the most disturbing fact is
the alarming increase in racism. While science always tries to prove the inequality of man (recent survey showing the American Black to be genetically less intelligent than whites) it is only religion that preaches the equality of man.
Between 1991 and 1997, it was estimated that total immigration into Europe was around 520,000, and there were racially motivated attacks all over, especially in Britain, France and Germany. In Pakistan during the Afghan war, we had over four million refugees, and despite the people being so much poorer, there was no racial tension. There was a sequence of events in the 80s that moved me toward God as the Qur'an says: 'There are signs for people of understanding.' One of them was cricket. As I was a student of the game, the more I understood the game, the
more I began to realize that what I considered to be chance was, in fact, the will of Allah. A pattern which became clearer with time. But it was not until Salman Rushdie's 'Satanic Verses' that my understanding of Islam
began to develop.

People like me who were living in the Western world bore the brunt of
anti-Islam prejudice that followed the Muslim reaction to the book. We were left with two choices: fight or flight. Since I felt strongly that the attacks on Islam were unfair, I decided to fight. It was then I realized that I was not equipped to do so as my knowledge of Islam was inadequate.
Hence I started my research and for me a period of my greatest enlightenment. I read scholars like Ali Shariati, Muhammad Asad, Iqbal, Gai Eaton, plus of course, a study of Qur'an.

I will try to explain as concisely as is possible, what 'discovering the truth' meant for me. When the believers are addressed in the Qur'an, it always says, 'Those who believe and do good deeds.' In other words, a Muslim
has dual function, one toward God and the other toward fellow human beings.
The greatest impact of believing in God for me, meant that I lost all fear of human beings. The Qur'an liberates man from man when it says that life and death and respect and humiliation are God's jurisdiction, so we do not have to bow before other human beings.
Moreover, since this is a transitory world where we prepare for the eternal one, I broke out of the self-imposed prisons, such as growing old (such a curse in the Western world, as a result of which, plastic surgeons are having a field day), materialism, ego, what people say and so on. It isimportant to note that one does not eliminate earthly desires. But
instead of being controlled by them, one controls them.

By following the second part of believing in Islam, I have become a better human being. Rather than being self-centered and living for the self, I feel that because the Almighty gave so much to me, in turn I must use that blessing to help the less privileged. This I did by following the fundamentals of Islam rather than becoming a Kalashnikov-wielding
fanatic.

I have become a tolerant and a giving human being who feels compassion for the underprivileged. Instead of attributing success to myself, I know it is because of God's will, hence I learned humility instead of arrogance.
Also, instead of the snobbish Brown Sahib attitude toward our masses, I believe in egalitarianism and strongly feel against the injustice done to the weak in our society. According to the Qur'an, 'Oppression is worse than killing.' In fact only now do I understand the true meaning of Islam, if you submit to the will of Allah, you have inner peace.
Through my faith, I have discovered strength within me that I never knew existed and that has released my potential in life. I feel that in Pakistan we have selective Islam. Just believing in God and going through the rituals
is not enough. One also has to be a good human being. I feel there are certain Western countries with far more Islamic traits than us in Pakistan, especially in the way they protect the rights of their citizens, or for
that matter their justice system. In fact some of the finest individuals I know live there.
What I dislike about them is their double standards in the way they protect the rights of their citizens but consider citizens of other countries as being somehow inferior to them as human being, e.g. dumping toxic waste in the Third World, advertising cigarettes that are not allowed in the West and selling drugs that are banned in the West.
One of the problems facing Pakistan is the polarization of two reactionary groups. On the one side is the Westernized group that looks upon Islam through Western eyes and has inadequate knowledge about the subject. It reacts strongly to anyone trying to impose Islam in society and wants only a selective part of the religion. On the other extreme is the group that reacts to this Westernized elite and in trying to become a defender of the faith, takes up such intolerant and self-righteous attitudes that are repugnant to the spirit of Islam. What needs to be done is to somehow start a dialogue between the two extreme. In order for this to happen, the group on whom the greatest
proportion of our educational resources are spent in this country must study
Islam properly.

Whether they become practicing Muslims or believe in God is entirely a personal choice. As the Qur'an tells us there is 'no compulsion in religion.' However, they must arm themselves with knowledge as a weapon to
fight extremism. Just by turning up their noses at extremism the problem
is not going to be solved.
The Qur'an calls Muslims 'the middle nation', not of extremes. The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) was told to simply give the message and not worry whether people converted or not, therefore, there is no question
in Islam of forcing your opinions on anyone else. Moreover, we are told to respect other religions, their places of
worship and their prophets. It should be noted that no Muslim missionaries or armies
ever went to Malaysia or Indonesia. The people converted to Islam due to the high principles and impeccable character of the Muslim traders. At the moment, the worst advertisements for Islam are the countries with their selective Islam, especially where religion is used to deprive people of their rights. In fact, a society that obeys fundamentals of Islam has to be a liberal one. If Pakistan's Westernized class starts to study Islam, not only will it be able to help society fight sectarianism and extremism, but it will also make them realize what a progressive religion Islam is. They will also be
able to help the Western world by articulating Islamic concepts. Recently, Prince Charles accepted that the Western world can learn from Islam. But how can this happen if the group that is in the best position to project Islam
getsits attitudes from the West and considers Islam backward? Islam is a universal religion and that is why our Prophet (peace be upon him) was called a Mercy for all mankind. (Internews)

MATCHDAY 6

THEATER OF DREAMS
I was watching the first half with Oz...more the Arsenal game. The MANCS got top spot though. Surprisingly they were held to a 2-2 draw. But they qualified. A MANC, Madrid game will be something else. Teves and Rooney. The Champions finish top after Villareal F#4ked up against Celtic.

Arsenal were really woeful. Woeful lities I say. They finish second. Bendtner had a terrible night an aslo Arsenal just gave away possession

Madrid were rampant and they hammered Zenith. Juve drew against Bate. Bayern were involved in a thriller and I thought Klose and Ribery were outstanding. Results went as planned. No Shockers and we in for a sublime round of 16 and 2nd phase. Forza Juve. Il look forward to the draw on Friday.

FROM THE KOP END

1-0 down against PSV and then 3-1 winners. Even though Liverpool qualified, it was Top spot that mattered. Babbel, Riera and Ngog took the Reds to Top Spot in what was a tough group. Theres still some big Boys lurking in second place, Chelsea, Madrid maybe, lets see how tonight unfolds. Benitez though has apparantly signed a contract extension at Andfield quashing rumours that he was on his way out. More importantly the Reds are into the next round. Rafa in Europe....A different Man

Totti sealed Romas win and they qualify along with Chelsea. Inter lost against Bremen but Mourinho is through. Barca suffered a shock defeat at Shaktar.

As for Chel$ki they were made to sweat. They were 1-0 up, conceded and then fortunately for them, the Romans scored. Drogba however came off the Bench and sealed it for Chelski.

Lets see what tonights fixtures will yield.

ESMERILDA DANKAERT

This weeks Babe of the Week is the stunning Esmerilda Dankaert. To see more pics of Esmerilda and PIMS exclusive one on one...

SUPER TUESDAYS ON SWOOSH0018

Eid was good. Long day, tiring but atmosphere always something else. We were done early. Waited in the que at Bhatias farm. Avoided the druxers,(guys that jump the que) and were done. But these druxers, ridiculous. If everyone just has to wait their turn, things will be in order. But no, our owes come last but they want to finish first. LIFO, Last in , First Out.

Anyways an interesting story about EID. Some Paki owes or India owes decided to slaughter a Brahmin Bull, Magnificent Beast I might add. They had a big yard, brought the Bull home and by some strange reason the bull escaped. My buddy, was walking past the road, he seen people running in all directions. He asked the India owe, Whats wrong. India owe is screaming ,he is petrified. He is saying..."GUY" GUY". Hassen asked,"What Guy?Where". He say there........

Next thing Hassen checked this Bull running down the street. Hassen said" Benchot, why dont you speak in English and he started running. (guy, gujrati for Bull?). Turns out one owe had roped the beast and on the corner cafe he fastened the Brahmin to the Stop sign. The f$ekn Bull bent the whole stop sign. The Metro owes were driving down the road, they seen this whole gemors and they got involved. In the end they got the Bull back to the farm and slaughtered hi there. But thats the beauty of Eid. If any of you owes got some stories of this magnitude, please leave a comment?
As for the footie
THEATER OF DREAMS
THEFT AGAIN. LIKE IT OR NOT , IT IS THEFT
In the afternoon yesterday I met Uncle Shane, an avid MANC FAN. I said Uncle Shane "94th minute". Thats Theft, you huys are thieves. He said "It was 91st minute"
I said Uncle Shane whether you steal from a guy when he is going to work or coming home from work, you still stealing. But the MANCS were peppering the Sunderland goal. To no avail. It just wasnt coming. I spoke to Mamoo, who couldnt contain himself. He was playing the UTD SONGS, HE WAS SAYING HIS HAIR WAS STANDING WHEN VIDIC SCORED. He kept on saying that the context of the goal and the time it came and how it came by VIDIC was sublime. He couldnt contain himself.........He said this is the joy of a MANC FAN.
I want to ask the MANCS, "Whats up with Berbatov...and Penaltino?Just a question, no need to get defensive here.
Whatever though, I still call it THEFT
FROM THE KOP END
A great win for us and we maintaining momentum going into Christmas. I was speaking to some guys the other day and they said that Xabi Alonso has been Liverpools best plasyer and that Kuyts hard work is an asset to the team. Even though many pundits are saying that Liverpool are playing the S#@3est ball. We are still up there
Eid has taken its toll. so Im gonna keep the post short.
Good wins for Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs, juve, Milan and Inter. As for Madrid, Shuster must f#2k off

ITALY 1934

WOZA SA 2010 WOZA

WORLD CUP REVIEW:

ITALY 1934

Well after the first World cup was held in Uruguay, South America it was now Europe’s turn to host the World Cup and Mussolini’s Italy got the World Cup. World Cup Tournament Participants now however had to qualify and although Italy were the hosts they had to qualify for the World Cup as well. Imagine Italy not qualifying for the World Cup and being hosts but they managed to beat Greece 4-0 and qualify saving face and the World Cup spirit. Italy being the host was a great platform for Mussolini to propagate fascism. This world cup had 16 nations that qualified, 2 from South America, 1 from North America, 1 from Africa and 12 from Europe. World Cup 1934 had a different format to the previous World cup in that there were no Group Games but a straight Knockout Format to the finals.

Round 1
The hosts Italy absolutely hammered the United States in the opening game of the tournament winning 7-1. Schiavio scored a hatrick. Other results included Spain beating Brazil 3-1, Sweden beating Argentina 3-2 and Hungary beating the first African team playing in a World Cup Egypt 4-2 resulting in a complete European Quarterfinal line-up. Switzerland beat Holland 3-2, Austria beat France 3-2, Czechoslovakia beat Romania 2-1 and Germany beat Belgium 5-2 with Conen scoring a hatrick to complete the quarterfinal list.
Quarter-Finals
Germany beat Sweden 2-1, Czech Republic beat Switzerland 3-2 and Austria beat Hungary 2-1 to all qualify for the semi-finals. Italy drew 1-1 with Spain after extra time and therefore created the first ever World Cup Knockout Replay match as there were no penalty shoot outs. In the Replay Italy’s star player Guisseppe Meazza scored the only goal of the match to make Italy the last Semi-finalist.
Semi-Finals
Italy beat Austria’s “Wunderteam” Very Controversially by a Single Goal to Nil reach the final. It is rumoured that the Swedish Referee in charge of the game Ivan Eklind was approached and appointed by Mussolini. Italy’s opponents would be Czechoslovakia who beat Germany 3-1 thanks to Czechoslovakia’s star player of the tournament Oldrich Nejedly scoring a hatrick as well as a goal each in the first 2 rounds of the tournament. This would make him the top scorer of the tournament with 5 goals.
Third-Place Playoff
In the first ever officially recorded third place playoff (losers final) Germany beat Austria 3-2 to claim third place.

Finals
Mussolini was undoubtedly enjoying the World Cup with Italy being in the finals and having a great chance to win. Again their was controversy even before the start of the game as the referee for the Final was to be the same referee of Italy’s Semi-final against Austria, Sweden’s Ivan Eklind. The first goal only came with under 20 minutes to go from Czechoslovakia’s Puc. The Italians equalized through Orsi in the dying minutes of the game to take it to Extra Time. (Photo of Italian Coach Vitorrio Pozzo observing the action)

Extra Time!
Now it was down to who was fitter. Italy were already struggling as Guiseppe Meazza was playing injured as no substitutes were allowed in FIFA World Cups as yet. This however worked in Italy’s favour as the Czech’s did not pay attention to marking him and it was Meazza who created the move that led to Schiavio scoring the winner for Italy. Italy became World Champions. Luis Monti Italy’s midfielder was the first ever player to win 2 medals with 2 different countries as runner up for Argentina in 1930 and winner for Italy in 1934. Orsi the equalizer and Guaiata were also Argentinean. It seems Italy had more Argentinean players than Italians. I wonder how Mussolini felt about that.

DID YOU KNOW?
Joseph “Pepi” Bican, striker of Austria’s “Wunderteam”, holds the record for scoring the most goals, 804+, in professional games excluding friendly games. In total with friendly games he is recorded to have scored a minimum of 1467 goals. This makes him the most prolific scorer of all time and was awarded the “Golden Ball” as the greatest goal scorer of the 20th Century by the International Federation of Football Historians and Statisticians.

MOMENT THAT SHOOK THE WORLD CUP!
Defending Champions Uruguay refused to play in the World Cup in Italy because Italy had snubbed their invitation 4 years earlier in Uruguay. They remain the only team ever in the History of FIFA World Cups to not defend their World Cup Crown. This was a definite blow to the World Cup.

SUPER TUESDAY ON SWOOSH0018

From the Diving to the HAND OF GOD, Penaltino has scooped the Ballon Dior. I would have chose Messi. But PENALTINO has crossed the finihing line

Manchester United Star Cristiano Ronaldo Wins Ballon d'Or
The result everyone was expecting has come to pass as the Red Devils' superstar winger has been named European Footballer of the Year...

France Football has handed its prestigious Ballon d'Or award to Cristiano Ronaldo, a decision that will surprise no-one given his outstanding performances over the past 12 months.
The 23-year-old led Sir Alex Ferguson's side to the Premier League and Champions League titles last term, netting some 42 goals along the way - an incredible feat for a player who predominately plays on the right flank.
Ronaldo was a clear winner, collecting 77 votes from the 96 journalists who judge the award, while Lionel Messi of Barcelona and Liverpool's Fernando Torres filled out the placings.
It is just the latest of many individual triumphs for the former Sporting Lisbon sensation, who was dubbed player of the year by the Football Writers' Association and the Professional Footballers' Association in 2006-07. He was recently named the 2008 FIFPro World Player of the Year.
Ronaldo becomes the fourth Man United star to claim the Ballon d'Or, following in the footsteps of Denis Law (1964), Sir Bobby Charlton (1966) and George Best (1968).
It is perhaps fitting that the Real Madrid target's win marks the 40th anniversary of Best's triumph, as he has often been compared to the late, great Ulsterman.
Next up for Ronaldo is the FIFA World Player of the Year gong, which has never been won by an English-based player.

2008 Ballon d'Or Top Ten Classification
1. Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal/Manchester United) - 446 points
2. Lionel Messi (Argentina/Barcelona) - 281 pts
3. Fernando Torres (Spain/Liverpool) - 179 pts
4. Iker Casillas (Spain/Real Madrid) - 133 pts
5. Xavi Hernandez (Spain/Barcelona) - 97 pts
6. Andrei Arshavin (Russia/Zenit St. Petersburg) - 64 pts
7. David Villa (Spain/Valencia) - 55 pts
8. Kaka (Brazil/AC Milan) - 31 pts
9. Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Sweden/Inter) - 30 pts
10. Steven Gerrard (England/Liverpool) - 28 pts

FROM THE KOP END

WHY ARE LIVERPOOL SO WASTEFUL

Liverpool have dropped four points in the past week. And that four points is critical. But what is the problem. Can we not score without Torres?

Do we need another striker. Was Keane a flop at 20 million.Maybe we can steal OWEN away. I think he can still do the job for us. All three draws basically was wasteful. Liverpool could not score.

So Kop Owes Do we need another striker. A six yard box striker that can bag us 20

FROM MY END

EBRAHIM AMOD

DOWN MEMORY LANE WITH MOHAMMED ‘BREE’ BULBULIA

‘Bree’ Bulbulia age 86 was a very prominent business man and was very much involved with cricket. ‘Bree’ tried to bring the West Indies Team over here to South Africa in 1958. Every thing was arranged for Sir Frank Worrell as captain to lead a star studded squad to South Africa for only 5000 pounds.
It’s a pity that Tour did not take place because the ANC were opposed to that Tour. The South African public were denied the opportunity to see greats such as Sobers-Worrell-Kanhai- Collie Smith- Ramadhin-Alf Valentine and many others.
If that Tour had materialized it would have put the South African Non-White cricketers on the world map.
‘Bree’ singled out Basil D’Oliveira as the greatest batsman produced by South Africa. He also said that 8 Non- White cricketers would have walked into a fully representative South African Team if it was selected on merit. He named Basil D’Oliveira, Tiny Abed, Lobo Abed[a better wicket- keeper than John Waite in his prime] Owen Williams till now South Africa have not produced a left-arm spinner like him, Cecil Abrahams, Cootie Neethling Frank Roro, Eric Petersen, Mac Anthony, Freedman and Basil Waterwich as really top class cricketers.
‘How good was Mac Anthony?’ he said that Eric Rowan described Mac Anthony as a machine, he also said that in the 1951 Tournament played in Cape Town, Transvaal scored 146 and Natal were 94/8, a partnership then developed till the score reached 144 then Mac bowled Tvl to victory by 2 runs. (‘Bree’ was manager of Tvl in 1951)
‘How good was Issy Maal?’ he said that Maal was a terrific batsman. When a match was played at the Fietas grounds on the centre pitch Maal had hit many bowlers right into the cemetery on many occasions.
‘How good was Taliep Sallie?’ he said that when England Toured here, Wally Hammond was a top-class batsman and yet Taliep Sallie bowled Hammond out a few times in the nets. He said that Sallie was a very good all- rounder.
‘Bree’ had high praise for Links Padyachie – he said Links had the deadliest left foot and was the finest footballer produced in this country. He also said that David Samaai as a tennis player was very good and would have reached the top if it was not for apartheid.
In golf Papwa beat Gary Player in a Tournament in Durban and Papwa received his trophy in the rain because of the color of his skin.
‘How good was Sir Donald Bradman?’ he said that Bradman’s performances and average spoke for themselves, I did not see him bat, but he was hot and the most prominent in the news from the late 1920’s until his retirement from cricket in 1948.
‘Who’s the greatest batsman you saw in action?’ he said that he saw Garry Sobers at Manchester in 1966 in the 1st Test, Sobers came to the wicket an over before tea, England had just taken the new ball and at the close of play, Sobers was 87*, it was just merciless slaughter. Sobers was the greatest that I had seen up to this day.
Who would you choose between Lara and Tendulker?’- Brian Lara gets my nod because he is such a joy to watch when he is in full flow.
‘How good is Jacques Kallis?’------- Kallis has a good average but he is very dour at the crease and seems to be playing for his own averages.
‘Did South Africa have any good batsman in the apartheid days?’------- Dudley Nourse and Bruce Mitchell and then Graeme Pollock came along.
‘How was life in the apartheid days?’------ I was invited to a function as a businessman, but because of the color of my skin, I was told not to come to the function by Sidney Bloch who was the MD of the Ackermans Group at that time. After he found out that I was a Non- White he did not want my presence at the opening of the new Belfast Store in Pretoria ( that was life and many other instances were experienced as Non-Whites).

‘Bree’ also said that cricketers from Transvaal that deserved to be mentioned as fine players were Amien Variawa- Tiefie Barnes- Hashim Rasdien- Hashim Abrahams- Mohammed ‘Round The Mountain’ Garda- Jimmy Bulbulia was a very good captain and when took over from Dawood Chota in that 1951 clash against Natal when Mac Anthony bowled Tvl to victory, Jimmy was a very inspirational as leader.

PENALTINOS HANDS

Quote of the Week
"Arsenal are the opposite of Christiano Ronaldo. They only perform in the Big Games"-An Arsenal Fan

It was a great weekend, But a busy one. I was helping the Rashid Cassim Sports lads to move in to the new RCS MEGASTORE. Let me tell you people, Its something else. Probably gonna be the biggest Sports store of its kind in Southern Africa...Amazing. I want to take the time to wish Rashid assim and the lads all the Best in the new Store. For those of you that dont know. Its just down the road. Where the old Burgers Brothers were.

On Saturday I attended PIM model and actress Lynne McCarthys Birthday. Happy Birthday Lynne and have a great year. Best Wishes from Swoosh0018. Sunday was a Waleema and for a change I sat in front of the box and put down some movies.

THEATER OF DREAMS.
Well the more you owes lambast Wayne Rooney, he comes back harder. Waynes goal was enough to give the MANCS victory and win the battle of Manchester. Thumbs up to Ian Hart for that save of Rooney at the death lol. But its three points for the MANCS. The biggest talking point though is the PENALTINO HANDBALL. UBG will touch more on this when he posts his MUGG o the Week column for Super Tuesday. But Penaltino what was he F#4ken thinking. Could it be that he heard the whistle already and let his momentum carry him through. Thats what the MANCS Say. Or is he just a MUGG. What do the Abus make about the Handball. From Diver to this. But he is great.....Maradona got away with it. Penaltino didnt

ALWAYS A GUNNER AND CHEL$KI
Big Phil must be highly upset. What is it with Arsenal. They pulling it off against the BIG BOYS and then they go lose against the Minnows.
Van Persie instrumental as the Gunners who lost two consecutive games. Chelsea must have been F#4ken upset. The unpredictable Arsenal. As my friend Justin ,and Arsenal owe said. They just like Takilla, One day it hits you and then the other day...It doesnt.

The Arsenal litys have got two big scalps against the MANCS and Chelsea, Can thye do it over Liverpool. The question Agian, Why cant they do it against the minnows.

Elsewhere in the premiership good wins for POMPEY, Rumours are rife that Roy Keane could be leaving Sunderland....Hull drew, Fullham on the rise. As we head into Christmas now, Things start hotting UP....So cant wait.

I Europe, Juve beat Reggiana 4-0, Inter and Roma won, Shakes what happened with Milan.PALERMO thrashed them.3-1. In fact Palermo crushed Milan. In La Liga, Barcelona were rampant and Messi and Eto are something else.
