SPECIAL ONE AT ANFIELD

L iverpool Targeting Jose Mourinho To Replace Rafa Benitez - Report
The Reds are lining up a new gaffer, and they want him to be extra Special...Mike Maguire

27 Feb 2009 05:04:37

Rafael Benítez UK tabloid The Sun claims that Premier League giants Liverpool have been sounding out Jose Mourinho, the Inter coach, as a potential replacement for Rafael Benitez. The latter trainer's future at Anfield has come under intense scrutiny in recent weeks, and it was reported recently that he had decided to leave at the end of the season due to contractual issues. However, following the Reds' landmark 1-0 win over Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday, the Spaniard declared that he would not leave Merseyside.Nevertheless, such was the state of unrest before the Bernabeu clash, club co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett began mulling over possible candidates to man the helm - and Mourinho was singled out.The former Chelsea boss announced recently that he would like to return to England at some point, and he has often been linked with Manchester United and his old haunt at Stamford Bridge. An unnamed source said, “The Americans [Hicks and Gillett] had read Mourinho was interested in returning to the Premier League and wanted to know if he meant it.“But it wasn’t a firm approach or a job offer. It was more a case of testing the water in case Rafa did decide to walk out.” Liverpool came close to appointing the self-styled 'Special One' before eventually settling on Benitez back in 2004, and they could yet mount another assault should the current incumbent continue to wrangle for more control over transfers.

ONE ON ONE WITH HASHIM AMLA

Hash and the SA Team are in JHB for the first Test against Austrailia. Swoosh0018 was really proud of Hash's accomplishments and it was a perfect time for me and Hash to have our chaai (tea) and get an exclusive one on one with Hashim Amla
swoosh0018: Hash, Welcome back. Shukr. A great performance down under. You were in form. Ozzies and people around the world commended Hashim Amla's performance. Going to Oz is always a psychological barrier for most SA Cricketers. You overcame this with ease. How was the experience. Is Australia as intimidating as people make it out to be?
hash: Thanks Nas, the tour was a lovely experience. Before we left we had a few discussions within the team about the pressures that come in Oz ie. the banter on the field, crowds and general public chirping and hostility. So i guess to a certain degree we were expecting and prepared for a tough time, however, after the first test match in which we won chasing down a record total the public were not as hostile towards us since then.

swoosh0018:Describe to us, the feeling when you scored the winning runs to secure the series victory?
hash: I guess deep down everyone on the team had the desire to be the one to finish the game and end the series, so i was just grateful that I had the opportunity. There were a few players in our team who had waited a long time to defeat the Ozzies so you can imagine there were a few emotional moments.

swoosh0018: Define one moment that you would cherish for many years in this tour?
hash: On a personal note, hitting the winning runs in the Melbourne test and also being there at the end when we won the 4th One day game in Adelaide which clinched the ODI series. Another moment was when JP (Duminy) scored his century, the team was just so ecstatic for him and his achievement.

swoosh0018:You have stepped into the one day team with breathtaking performances, and now its great to see Hashim Amla as a Great Test and One day player. Is it a big transition. Are your preparations the same. It seems as if your loving the one day game. How does it feel knowing that you have had two great one day series against giants like Austrailia and England
hash: haha i dont know about being "a Great test and one day player". God willing. The ODI's have been a different experience altogether and i very much feel that i am still finding my feet and have so much to learn in this format.

swoosh0018: Did you meet Shane Warne, Gilchrest and the likes, Its fair to say that they were legends and that Austrailia missed them. What are they like off the pitch and retired. Im sure they, especially Warne missed the atmosphere and competitiveness
hash: I did get to meet them although I didnt get to tap into their wisdom of the game. I can only imagine that a competitor like Warne misses the intensity of the International cricket, and really, both of those guys were brilliant cricketers and to replace them immediately is improbable.

swoosh0018: Did the Ozzies Sledge you Hash.? I know its hard to get this info out from you.Care to share some if their antics with us, especially on the fence where its known that everyone takes a beating?
hash: On the field there was not a huge amount of sledging, but certainly on the boundary the spectators used to hurl abuse at us. Lets just say there was more swear words then classical Oxford dictonary ones. :)

swoosh0018: Who was the one Ozzie bowler that you always found a threat and kept you on your toes. With McGrath gone, Mitchell Johnson looked menacing?
hash: At times different bowlers were threatening. Yes, Johnson had a few good spells as well and Siddle on occasions.

swoosh0018: At home JP Duminy sknock was described as unbelievable. In the context of the game, and psychological anlaysis that SA has never won down under, how was it embraced by the dressing room and of course by you as a cricketer? A worthy mention is Steyns 70 odd?
hash: JP's knock will remain in the memories of many people who watched it and non more so then the teammates. After that days play, there was a sense of disbelief at the how the match had changed in our favour. Dales knock was more surprising then anything. Although everyday is a blessed day, that partnership left us something more to marvel at .

swoosh0018: How is the squad shaping up for the upcoming series, Im sure there is a lot of confidence. Your predictions?
hash:We have had a few training sessions and preparation is on the way, however, we all are excited and anxious as any other series. We know that the Ozzies will have much to prove and be more determined now more then ever so we will have to be up to our best to win the series. I dont do predictions.

swoosh0018: Lastly how has the Doc Mohammed Moosajees new role impacted the team. Im sure he commands alot of repect from opposition and SA Players. How to the players and yourself feel about the Doc, and on a personal capacity. Whats it like touring with the DOC. Is he a legend?
hash: Doc is certainly a legend and has a profound respect in the team. Its lovely to have good company on tour and someone to settle down , chill and have a hot chai at the end of a day with. :) You know how it goes Nas.

For sure Hashim, lol.ONE FOR THE ROAD HASH, AND I have to ask you this. Im sure there are many wanting to know the answer to this. Are you Single? Can We give you the through Ball?
hash:
haha@through ball. Yeah im still single.

swoosh0018:Thanks Hash, and all the best for the series against the Ozzies, and the first test at the Wanderers. Bring us a century.
Once again please leave your comments and let us show our support to a remarkable individual who has achieved what many have dreamed to achieve. His stature on and off the pitch has set the precedent for many of our communities youth , he is an inspiration and destined for greatness. Please leave a comment and show your support.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE-ROUND OF 16

A NIGHT AT THE BERNABEAU
I felt for Riyad Loonat last night, the Madrid man invited all of us over to the Santiago Bernabeau in Ormonde. We had a full house there watching the Madrid ,Liverpool game and catching a odd glimpse of the Juve game.
It was a s@#t game to be honest and when Benayoun scored late for a precious away goal the lads were going mad, including my oom Ebie Loonat, a Heavy Liverpool supporter. Riyad was heartbroken as you can see in the picture lambasting Heinze for causing a unnecessary and stupid foul. The delivery was perfect and with Madrid defence it was a perfect result I think to take to Anfield. We couldn't ask for anything more.
Reyna was superb and Benitez ignited the fire again by taking off Torres and bringing on Lucas. When he brought on Lucas with all but 3 minutes to go the lads were fuming.
Just a point about Xabi Alonso, A few guys that went to Anfield and saw the man live commended his remarkable vision. It showed yesterday when he almost beat Cassilas spectacularly from the half way line. if it was any other keeper that was in.
On the whole though Liverpool fans can only be happy taking a precious goal with them at the Bernabeau
Joy turned to despair when my Juve went down to Chelsea. Someone let the Drog out and we down 1-0, needing 2 in Turin. Can we do it. Its gonna be a tough task. I didnt watch the game, just the highlights but Juve almost got the crucial away goal at the death, a deflection of a Nedved shot.
Amauri also cam close when he should have burried a header but Gus has navigated a tricky tie and Chelsea have the upper hand in Turin.
Villareal drew and Killa , your Bayern Munich were rampant led by Ribery in a mesemerising assault of Sporting Lisbon in Lisbon. They have surely qualified and lie in wait for the rest.
We watched the game last night with Mo Cassim and Seth, with me and Mo obviously punting for Inter. Shakes I agree, not dull..dull in a sense that a game of that magnitude I wanted to see goals. The MANCS deserve to be at least three up in the first half. Penaltino looked menacing and for a man of Ryan Giggs calibre he had to make the best of the two chances that he had in the game.

I cant understand how this Inter Team is leading Serie A. After half time Mourinho must have given them a pep talk of some sort as they came out with a little vooma. Adriano the culprit on a few occasions. But 0-0 I think the MANCS should be happy with that result. My panel on the night stated clearly that it will be difficult for Inter to come to Trafford and get victory.

But if they nick one , and they have the firepower to do that, then its a whole different story.
For me the man of the match was Cesar. He kept an amazing Penaltino header out and at the death with that ball swerving around he kept the MANCS at bay.

I asked the guys about Fergusons tactics of not playing a 4-4-2 with Rooney and Berbatov upfront. I met get lambasted but the toppie could have gone more attacking with a 4-4-2 and an in form Wayne Rooney. I was just baffled a bit.

I dunno I guess I expected Inter to really force the pace. The MANCS were so comfortable at times , its as if they were playing at Old Trafford and not the San Siro.
So who should feel better, Inter or Man Utd. Its that away goal thats a scary prospect

Barcelona, surprisingly drew away to Lyon, and it was Lyon who took the lead. Interesting away leg looms for Lyon. Arsenal , beat Roma surprisingly. I expected Roma to produce the goods. But credit to Arsenal for not conceding and going a goal up. Porto were also happy that they got two important away goals.

As for tonight......I dont think the Juve vs Chelsea game will yield a big scoreline from both teams. Its gonna really tight with two coaches that boast an array of tactical prowess. So if Juve nick an away goal Im sure we will snuff them out at the Bridge. The thing that worries me though is that under Hiddink, we are facing a rejuvenated Chelsea. Im gonna go for 1-1 at the Bridge

As for Liverpool, many said that better Real madrid in the round of sixteen than any other team. But that was when Madrid were s3$te. Now they are in rampant form. What can I say. Rafa knows his place in Europe. I think wel beat Madrid by two goals. Tonight we will see!

SUPER TUESDAYS ON SWOOSH0018

FROM THE KOP END
By Red For Life

Utd Go 7 Points Clear
Utd opened up a 7 point gap after we stumbled to our 10th draw of the season. Without Stevie G and Alonso in midfield we just lacked imagination and drive. Lucas once again was given a starting role in midfield alongside Mascherano but failed to impress. One really has to wonder about Rafa's vision in selling Sissoko and replacing him with Lucas.I for one hope that Rafa doesn't sign the new and improved contract thats on offer. We should cut our losses and get rid of him at the end of the season. There are a number of players that should follow him out of Anfield namely Lucas, Dossena, Babel, Ngog, Benoyoun, Voronin, Deggen, El Zhar, Pennant & Aurelio. These are players that have never lived up to expectations. In the league this season Rafa's tactics were questioned. I know he is the one that got us to the top but in recent weeks he seemed to have no clue. Decisions that are ultimatley made by him came into question, team selection, subs, timing of subs and negative tactics. These are decisions that could well end our title push.Next up for LFC is an exciting trip to the Bernabeau and I bet my life on it you'll see a totally different Liverpool. Their hunger and drive for success would be greater and you can just hear everyone saying what a great manger he is but don't be fooled as its back to normal next Saturday with a visit to the Riverside sporting a team consisting of wholesale changes.

THE SHOOBS CORNER
ALL THE WAY FROM THE UK

And the Reds go Marchin On, On, On !!! Another 3 points for the Red Devils and I think the Blackburn game stood testimony to not only the quality of the team but also the brilliance of Sir Alex Ferguson. My tout organised some great tickets to the game and I took up a coalition of 5 mense for weekend. As always, Old Trafford was buzzing, but it was a bit of a nervous buzz before the game. With the massive Inter fixture coming up, fans were slightly concerned over the line up SAF would play and anything short of 3 points would not only open the door up for the scousers but create some negativity before our European fixture. My personal fear was injury that could be afflicted to players by Blackburn. Bolton were a physical team under Allardyce and Blackburn are no different. Anyhow, with Van der Sar and Vida on the bench I also questioned the ability for us to keep a clean sheet but Johnny Evans has shown quality throughout this season and Rio is our ever present rock. I went into the stadium 30 minutes early to take in The Theatre of Dreams and watch the boys warm up. Rooney looked really sharp and so did Giggsy. Truth be told, Sholesy looked a bit lazy during the warm up session but had a cracker of a game. Allardyce’s tactics were clear to see … “kick ‘em into submission” !!! The Blackburn lads turned the game into a full on scrap and full points to the young Rafael da Silva. He was clearly the smallest oke on the pitch and got kicked at constantly throughout the game. Santa Cruz did get the better of him on occasion but he held his own and stood up well. Apart from the belter of a free kick from Ronaldo, the most talked about player post the game was Nani. There’s a split opinion on most of the MUFC forums on Nani. Watching him at the weekend and at other games he’s played, his greedy nature and lack of vision has to be questioned. Still, you can see the boy has a good touch and great potential and I feel it’s a maturity thing. Personally I would have subbed him at half time as he was giving a below average performance and even though he provided the ball for the first goal, his terrible communication with Scholes was the only reason Blackburn scored … but this is where the brilliance of SAF comes into play.

A lesser manager would have pulled off Nani at half time and possibly Scholes on 60 min, but SAF read the game perfectly and executed his substitutions at precisely the right moments. It was a scrappy win for us and even though we dominated it was a close game till the very end. Ultimately, 3 points is 3 points and we’ll take ‘em any way we can get ‘em. Let’s hope we can deliver an inspired performance at the San Siro which is sure to be our most difficult fixture so far. With defensive problems and Inter in fine form, we’ll really have to bring it together to take the game to Mourinho’s men. At the moment, the Inter game and United’s defensive worries are headlines in the UK. Rafa’s contract issues and Liverpool’s choking are also talking points. Not much being made about Chelsea’s win over Villa except what a revelation Hiddink is and how Chelsea is playing as team again (give it a few draws and Hiddink will be branded a failure and team spirit will be in the toilet again, it’s become the Chelsea way).

I’ve got some great pics of Old Trafford and the lads warming up, which I’ll send thru to Swoosh some time this week for the Blog. Otherwise, all I have left to say this week is Viva Ronaldo !!!

THE RETURN OF THE CHAVEL

Jose vs Fergie
Its bound to be an intriguing match! Mutterings from both camps suggest the mind games are definitely on. It might be a slow game of chess but suspicion tells me the way Inter played against Milan, with Milan largely dominating possession & Inter biding their time waiting for the odd mistake United could well dominate & open up a can of whip ass. The defensively minded Mourinho though could easily slit Uniteds battered defense with armory in the form of Ibra Ka Dabra & the overweight “handyman” Adriano. However for United the playmaking ability of Giggs & Berbatov could prove the difference but Mourinho’s personal record against Fergie since his days at Porto puts him in pole. Below are a series of attack & counter statements from both camps. The pic below is one of pure inspiration, legends of their time hooking up at the San Siro, United in their blood legends live on…

Jose: “Nothing will be decided in Milan. I’m expecting a situation where, in the last minute at Old Trafford, no one knows who is going through. It will go to the full 180 minutes or, probably, more.”
Fergie: “Well, I have to disagree with Jose there. I think it will be decided here. These days it’s very important to take a goal back for the home leg. If we do that, we’ll have a great chance. And he thinks it’s going to extra-time? Interesting. He’s probably forgotten we’re pretty good at that!”
Jose: “I don’t believe United are coming here to have fun. They are a great attacking team but I have watched them closely in Europe — starting with the goal-less draw in Barcelona last season — and they have changed the way they play outside Old Trafford. I’m not saying they are afraid of us but they do know they can lose. Because of that they will not come here with the same approach they have in the Premier League. They will not come here to take us on and win the game.”
Fergie: “Jose knows better than most that Manchester United do not often go into games not wanting to win. It will be the same out here.”
Jose: “We will play basically the same way — 4-4-2 with Adriano and Zlatan Ibrahimovic up front and a diamond in midfield. I’m not frightened to tell you that. But they will not come here with Cristiano Ronaldo, Carlos Tevez, Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney all in the team. Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Park Ji Sung will play their part. Defensive? Sure.”
Fergie: “Obviously, I’m trying to think of how Inter could change and I can’t come up with anything. We watched them on six occasions and they played the same way every single time. “Apart from bringing in someone for Nemanja Vidic at centre-half, we will have the same team and will play our normal game.”
Fergie: “Panic! Play him (Berbatov) at sweeper . . . ” When Asked the possibility of Jonny Evans and John O’Shea being ruled out.
Jose: “The smell of this game is in the air — the adrenalin is in the air. My team are ready. They responded well against Juventus, Roma and Milan here at the San Siro and I expect them to do it again.”
Fergie: “It’s a pity this one couldn’t have been the final.”

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE BALL

Tomorow Night, Champions League Ball at Cafe Picasso, Fordsburg............................

Come witness the MANCS incredible Run ended by Jose Mourinho.

21:15
Inter Milan vs Man Utd

Change of venue this time. Cafe Picasso on Mint Road.
Mamadoo and Toby, Hope to see you there.

I AM GUTTED-HAVE WE THROWN IT AWAY

We F#$ked up again... The MANCS are 7 clear. It was a hectic weekend, Had a documentary to shoot on Fordsburg with Eastern Mosaic, which was indeed an experience, walking the streets of Fordsburg and capturing the past, and history and hearing what people say about Fordsburg, getting the ambience of the restaurants. I think it will be aired in April.

Then there was weddings and Waleemas and eish, a hectic busy weekend..................

As for the footie, Liverpool guys are irate. I dont know what to say. It was crucial, it was critical. Is the safe question to say, Have we f#4ked it up. Have we thrown the title away. We have indeed put ourselves under pressure by trailing the MANCS with 7 points.

Sms's were coming in 10 f#4ken draws, Thats 30 points ,HAve we thrown it away.

or like "Rafa f#4ked up today, Shud have played Babel and Tores upfront. Riera, Mash, Yossi Kuyt, Aurelio, Carra, Arbeloa 7 points off the kA3ts.Lets hope we beat them, then 4 points, and now we must pray they f#4k up and lose!Im devastated"

Is that too much to ask. I ask the lads from the KOP, Has it gone or must we still believe?

Chelsea, won under Hiddink. Arsenal drew and Juve Won. Thats all I have to say this week. It was a hectic weekend

While we were at the wedding, The MANCS are in perishaans. We were eating the prawns and every one was showing two hands, 1-1. Uncles at the Dega were not taking teh food out properly. Then when it was 2-1 thanks to a Penaltino free kick, a belter of a free kick I must say, al the timers at the wedding were full of smiles and they were even pouring tea for the litys.

Mammoo the MANC glowed in his suit

THE MANCS GO 5 CLEAR

Rooney Makes Goalscoring Return As Manchester United Trounce Fulham
The champions have breathing space at the top thanks to a commanding show against a hapless Fulham...

It took them a while, but the champions finally have their feet under the table at the summit of the Premier League. With tonight's win over an outclassed Fulham, Sir Alex Ferguson's side move five points clear of Liverpool, and have now played as many games as their Anfield counterparts.

Roy Hodgson is still left contemplating away-day blues; that's no wins from 13 on the road. Home form will need to be exploited if the London side are to sustain their decent season to this point.

The Cottagers, in truth tonight, scarcely made a game of this. United were out of sight by half time, and could even afford the luxury of having two further opening period strikes disallowed. Paul Scholes and Dimitar Berbatov scored legitimately, while the Bulgarian and Carlos Tevez had offside goals annulled.

The second half saw Wayne Rooney welcomed back to duty, and the Scouser responded with a goal on the hour. Moments later and Edwin Van Der Sar celebrated overtaking Abel Resino's long-standing record without concession.

The impressive run continues, the clean-sheet record extends to 14 matches, that's over 1,300 minutes if you're counting.

What can I say. I got no comment. The MANCS won and emphatically against Fullham. For us. We would have probably drew against Fullham. Must I tell the aunties to stop planning for the Wedding parcels

SUPER TUESDAYS

Super-rich are super-losers16/02/2009 20:11 - (SA)

Moscow - Russia's super-rich are also super-losers in the financial crisis, according to the business magazine Finans, which said on Monday the top 10 wealthiest Russians lost about two-thirds of their fortunes over the past year.
The magazine's annual list of Russia's richest shows them suffering breathtaking losses as the country faces its worst financial crisis in a decade.
Oleg Deripaska, who had topped the Finans list in the previous two years, fell to eighth place after losing some 85% of his wealth - down to $4.9 billion from $40 billion, Finans estimated.
Mikhail Prokhorov, the playboy metals and banking billionaire who sold his stake in mining company Norilsk Nickel early last year, moved up from seventh place to top the list with a fortune of $14.1 billion, down from $21.5 billion a year ago, the magazine said.
Roman Abramovich, owner of Britain's Chelsea Football Club and a stake in steelmaker Evraz, held on to second place. But his fortune, estimated last year at $23 billion, has shrunk to $13.9 billion.
Russia's stock markets lost 70% of their value last year, while the national currency has lost 35% since the summer.
Aggressive geopolitical rhetoric and worsening corporate governance drove many investors away, while plunging prices for oil and metals underscored the fragility of Russia's eight-year oil-fuelled boom.
Deripaska, whose business interests include metals, construction and energy, was forced to cede stakes in Canadian auto components maker Magna and German housebuilder Hochtief last year.
He previously has objected to the estimates put on his wealth, saying that they failed to consider the size of his debts.
Deripaska built his fortune on the back of aggressive borrowings, and his Rusal aluminium company is reported to owe approximately $17 billion.
Other losers include steel magnates Vladimir Lisin, owner of a majority stake in NLMK, and Alexei Mordashov, owner of Severstal.
Lisin, who clings to third place, has seen his fortune plunge by 65% to $7.7 billion. Mordashov's fortune is down 81% to just $4.1 billion.
Finans, which publishes its "rich list" two months ahead of the better-known US Forbes list of billionaires, said the list had halved from last year, when they counted 101 billionaires.
Last year, Forbes confirmed Deripaska as Russia's richest man.

THE SHOOBS CORNER
ALL THE WAY FROM THE UK

Scolari out and football rich list As expected, Guus Hiddink’s appointment as Chelsea Gaffer is grabbing all the headlines here in the UK at the moment. It’s not been quite the same media circus that followed Mourinho’s departure, than again Mourinho is a much more assertive figure than Big Phil. However, Big Phil’s departure is slightly more controversial than Mourinho’s and I think for this very reason Chelsea have tried their best to play it down and use results as the sole reason Scolari was given the boot. Speculation at the Bridge about senior players not being happy with Big Phil has been around for a long time with Drogba being the unhappiest of the lot. Skipper JT also said something to one of the newspapers about him and maybe “two or three other players” being behind the gaffer. It has also been said that players felt Scolari didn’t keep Chelsea aggressive enough to mount a challenge in the Premiership.

I truly believe that all these issues put the writing on the wall for Scolari, but ultimately it came down to the ego of that Russian mobster who apparently had the “death mask” look on his face (which he is famous for doing right before screwing someone over) before he told Scolari to f**k off. Still, Scolari I reckon is not to upset as he still gets to bank around £7 mil for his efforts ... All in all, another sad episode of Life after the Special One at Stamford Bridge. Sad day to be a Blues supporter... Good week to be a Man United supporter. I’ve heard so much being said about the Arsenal youngsters but for the first time I’ve seen the media heap praise on the younger United squad. Derby manager Nigel Clough even went as far as saying United will win the lot after United schooled his team. “if anyone can do it they can,” said Clough “If they had played Arsenal, Liverpool or Chelsea in that form they could have put four past them, they were that good”. Let’s hope United can maintain their form and even though I think we’ll have a tough time getting past Mourinho’s Inter, if we capture just the league, I’ll be happy. Considering the last two seasons United has had, for United to be in serious contention for all 4 trophies is a testament to the heart of the team and the mark of a great manager.

The Deloitte Football Money League was updated last week as well and despite Man United revealing record profits thanks to being crowned Champions of Europe and Champions of the World, they still came in second to Real Madrid who have held their spot at number 1. Real have doubled their revenues since 2002 raking in a cool £289.6 million over the 2007/2008 period. Real, despite losing the “Beckham factor” are budgeting for revenues of £360 million for the 2008/2009.

List is as follows: 1
(1) Real Madrid – £289.6m2
(2) Manchester United – £257.1m
3 (3) FC Barcelona – £244.4m
4 (7) Bayern Munich – £233.8m
5 (4) Chelsea – £212.9m (The drop in revenue and profits put down to not winning any titles and massive payouts to Mourinho and Grant)
6 (5) Arsenal – £209.3m (Despite the Emirates bringing the Gooners an additional £1 mil every game they’ve dropped a spot – once again put down to a lack of success on the pitch)
7 (8) Liverpool – £167.0m (The clubs finances are starting to look “dire” and with their owners trying to flog the club at a ridiculous asking price, the books are not looking promising)
8 (6) AC Milan – £165.8m (No Champions league has cost the Rosoneri)
9 (11) AS Roma – £138.9m
10 (9) Internazionale – £136.9
11 (12) Juventus - £132.6m
12 (13) Lyon – £123.3m
13 (16) Schalke 04 – 117.5m
14 (10) Tottenham – £114.8
15 (15) Hamburg – £101.3m
16 (19) Marseille – £100.4m
17 (14) Newcastle – £99.4m
18 (-) Stuttgart – £88.3m
19 (-) Fenerbahce – £88.1m
20 (-) Manchester City – £82.3m

Interesting to note that 4 of the top 10 revenues are from English clubs maintaining the notion that the EPL is the biggest money spinner in football. I’m off to Old Trafford this weekend to watch the game against Blackburn and will send Swoosh some pics.

FROM THE KOP END
Torres Gets Rafa Out Of Jail
By RED FOR LIFE

Fernando Torres came off the bench to score a dramatic injury time winner against Portsmouth at the weekend. Rafa left him, Alonso, Kuyt and Riera on the bench and started with a "weakened" 11. Eyebrows were raised when Rafa went with a very unconventional starting line-up. 5 at the back and Aurelio in the centre of the park! What was he thinking? Why did he change the formation of the team?Aurelio was holding his own in midfield and even added some flair to it but we were lacking Alonso's ability and craftmanship to split defences and create something out of nothing and duly did that once he was introduced.Babbel looks like a broken man on the field. He no longer seems to have the ability to run at defences. His confidence is gone thanks to Rafa's inability to find his best position on the field. Is it as a winger or a striker, no one seems to know let alone Rafa. And what about the selection of Ngog to lead the line. He showed some good touches in pre-season games but nothing of late warrants a start. Rafa would have done better keeping Keane.Thank God Lucas was suspended for the game otherwise Mascherano might have also joined the "dream" team on the bench!Ok Rafa got the 3 points with resting key players and using them sparingly at the end but I just hope he knows what hes doing in the run in to the championship. With Gerrard out for up to 3 weeks he cannot gamble with his team selection. He need all his "big" players to come to the party and overhaul the points deficit to the mancs and bring home our 19th Championship.
In Super 14, The most impotant thing is that the Lions & Sharks won, poor Joost got caught. But we will have a comprehensive write up next week
SUPER TUESDAY QUESTION BY UNCLE BHAI GORA
My friend Guus Hiddink is at Chelsea, I really expected him to take de Bafana Job as he vas right man. Vill Guus vin Europe or Premiership wid Chelsea.
Can he do it. bad thing for Svoosh's Juve. Guus and Italians dont go together?

FA CUP 6TH ROUND

It was FA CUP weekend and as the guys said a rest weekend for Liverpool.
It was a lekker weekend. Something interesting I have to point out . On Firday I was at a function, finished at 1, felt a bit hungry so myself and Shazo and I went to McDonalds in Morningside, now that McDonalds is 24 hours its quite lekker.
We got our food, parked off and started eating. At about 2 in morning I checked two lities from Marlboro walking through the drive through. We called them over.I asked them what are you guys doing on foot this time of the morning. the bastards were gonna get food and walk back to Marlboro. I said are you Muggs crazy thats like a two day walk from here. They said that this was one of the best nites and they described it as one of the best nights ever. I should have let them walk but I said na...It was f#4ken far. Crazy lities man

The MANCS were emphatic in victory against Derby. I dont know why they were stressing in the first place about Derby, Mammoo and Co at the wedding house. They ran out 4-1 winners and SAF is on a desperate push to win 5 titles this year. Great win for them and it on to the quarter finals against Swansea. With Inter looming on the 22nd and Champions League next week, its starting to hot up.
Good win for Everton against Villa. Apart from the draws on Saturday, The quarter finals lie in wait
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SAN SIRO DERBY
F#4ken Inter the Muggs. Shakers What happened. Milan disappointed in the Derby. Becks was quite. Somehow on paper I feel Milan had the names but Inter put in a resolute performance in Midfield.Especially Zanetti and Cambiaso. Many Milan fans felt hard done by as Adriano used the aid of his arm.Perhaps Cesar made the save that probably saved teh scudetto for Inter.saving from Inzaghi in stoappage time. After the Pato goal Milan tried in vain but the ba#$terds Inter Won.
What made it worse was that Juve drew against a struggling Sampodoria side.
With this the scudetto is all but gonbe and Mourinho has it all to lose now

VALENTINES DAY AT THE JOHANNESBURG GENERAL CANCER WARD FOR KIDS

On Saturday the Swoosh0018 Team spent the afternoon of Valentines day at the JHB General Cancer ward for kids. Now Im gonna give you my version of this visit. It was really emotional ,sad but yet fullfilling to see some smiles when we gave every kid and mum a feathered scented rose for Valentines day. The Swoosh0018 CF really appreciated the warmth and hospitality showed by the staff of that ward. We then embarked on meeting every kid. We were not allowed to take any pictures of the kids. The first room we went to housed kids that were +_3 years of age all diagnosed with stomach and brain cancer. Yet when we arrived there with just roses a little girl lay with a severe case of brain cancer. She clutched the rose and kept it next to her the whole time, smiling.

We asked the nurse whats wrong, coz whilst we there she kept screaming. The nurse said that she seems to be in alot of pain. My heart went out. Across the bed lay a boy of three diagnosed with stomach cancer. As we made our way toward the end of the room there was a little girl sitting all by herself. She was four I think. She had all blisters on her mouth which were were told was a result of the chemo. She too was diagnosed with stomach cancer. And to be honest I dont think she had a clue of what her condition was ,yet she clutched the rose dearly. It was really sad to see them suffering and we were only in the first room.As we made our way through the ward we visited every kid ,most of them with a severe case of cancer, Kidney, Liver, stomach There were even some kids with a rare form of cancer where their legs had to be amputated because of this cancer. As we were walking through the passage we seen this two year old kid walking with a drip and he had just returned from an operation. he was diagnosed with cancer of the Liver. Then there was a baby of three months that was awaiting a possible diagnosis of cancer in the brain. For me personally it was amazing to see the fight in them. The smiles, the Will to survive and stay alive despite their condition and surroundings and yet they have not even begun the course of life. You look into their eyes, and you see this distinctive message. "Beyond this sickness lies immortality, Take it for its yours"Our hopes and prayers lie with these kids , their families and friends. We wish them a speedy recovery and the Swoosh0018 Charity Foundation will do its utmost to make their pain and anguish lesser.

To me they are an inspiration to shake the small trials and tribulations that plague us everyday And they have the will to survive

MAY YOU GROW FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

In the 1994 World Cup Paolo Maldini Captained Italy to the finals only to lose out to Brazil on penalties. These 2 World Cups were the greatest success Maldini would ever have at National Level. Maldini since his World Cup Debut in 1990 till his retirement in the 2002 World Cup never missed a single minute of Italy’s World Cup Games. Maldini is best known for his performances at Left Back although he did play at Centre Back later in his career. RUUD KROL
Full Name: Rudolf Joseph Krol
Born 24 March 1949
World Cups: 1974 & 1978

Part of the Legendary Dutch Total Football era, Ruud Krol was primarily a left back in the 1974 World Cup and a Centre Back in the 1978 World Cup. However due to the Total football system every player was not limited to a specific position. The Total Football System made Krol a versatile defender who could play anywhere along the defense line. Krol was an important part of the Dutch National Team that reached the finals in both 1974 & 1978. He was great defensively as well as in attack as the Total football system demanded. He assisted in many goals with his runs down the left flanks during the 1974 World Cups as well as scored a 25 yard belter against Argentina in 1974, a match in which the Dutch were magical. Many of you may know Ruud Krol today as the manager of our very own Football Giants Orlando Pirates.
NILTON SANTOS (THE ENCYCLOPEDIA)
Full Name:
Born 16 May 1925
World Cups: 1954, 1958 & 1962 (Member of 1950 Brazil Squad but did not play)

Nilton Santos was a left Wing-Back who featured for the Legendary World Cup Winning Brazilian teams of 1958 & 1962 as well as the 1954 team. Although a left back he was best known for his attacking ability on the left wing. He was nicknamed the encyclopedia because of his vast knowledge of the sport of football. A brilliant World Cup Moment that defined the attacking ability of Nilton Santos was defined by his magnificent 1958 World Cup Solo Goal against Austria where he dribbled his way through the whole field to score a classic. Nilton Santos is regarded as one of the greatest Wingbacks in the history of the game.

ANDREAS BREHME
Born 9 November 1960
World Cups: 1986, 1990 & 1994

Andy Brehme was a left back in the German team that reached the finals in the 1986 World Cup and won the 1990 World Cup. Bhreme was a solid left back who was excellent with his attacks down the left flank. He was also a free kick specialist for the German team and scored two free kick goals in both the 1986 Semi-Final against France and the 1990 Final Against England. Brehme also was a recognized penalty taker and is best remembered for scoring the winner against Argentina in the 1990 final which was a penalty. Brehme was also skilled with both his feet in that he scored the winning penalty in the 1990 final with his right foot but took free kicks with his left. He was a great left back both defensively and in attack as well as being able to play equally well with both feet.

ROBERTO CARLOS
Full Name: Roberto Carlos Da Silva
Born 10 April 1973
World Cups: 1998, 2002 & 2006

Well if you thinking of a WING BACK your mind must think of none other than Roberto Carlos. The man created his own style of being a Left Back. The caption above “Attack is the Best Form of Defense” best describes Robert Carlos. He was part of the 1998 Brazil Runner Up Team as well as the 2002 Champions team. His absolutely lethal left foot was a fear for any goalkeeper to face. His Bullet Free Kicks was another trademark of his and he scored a Free Kick against China in the 2002 World Cup Group Phase. The Run Up alone to his Free Kicks was a classic trademark of his. Also the amount of running Roberto Carlos did during the match down the left flank pays tribute to how fit he was at his prime.

INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLIES

DONT CLOSE THE DARWAJOH (DOOR)
By UNCLE BHAI GORA
I vant to know Svoosh readers ,How does Snatana shout his players if they make a mistake. Lets see if Tico modise makes a mistake den vat does he do.Does he first shout his translater, den he she shouts da players.
Vat is da time frame. Ridiculous, We hire a man dat cant speak English.
I also cant understand the commentators, saying Chile is a great team. They are good but vat are Bafana den. Bafana ver poor in defending on the flanks. And Santana made his usual press statement. We lost but we have learned from this. Vat the f#4k.
While I vas in polokwane I stopped at da gas station. De attendents dey say "AAAAAAISSSSSSH UBG, SANTANA HE SHEET, BRING BACK JOMO:
I say dont vorry after Confeds Cup you will see advert in paper "WANT TO BECOME A MILLIONAIRE OVERNIGHT, BECOME BAFANAS COACH. No international experience necesary"
Disappointing and if SA Dont vin Confeds Cup, SANTANA vill be history. mark my vord
In other friendlies the Germans suffered a shock defeat to Norway. The Germans were described as pedestrian like
An England lost to the European Champions Spain who have now gone on a 29 match winning streak. But as I said ,Its only friendlies

Azurri lose to Brazil. Its just a friendly. So not reading too much into it. Lippi put out a descent team. Cannavaro, Grosso, Pirlo, De Rossi. It was end to end action. And Robinho made the Italian defense dance for his goal.It just heats it up for the confeds cup. And we are due for an interesting match up, perhaps the best of the Confeds Cup. I cant wait!
