The name synonymous with the north-east, and England, has died after losing his cancer battle
Famed coach Sir Bobby Robson died during the early hours of Friday morning after losing his protracted cancer battle. The 76-year-old has fought the disease for the best part of two decades, but recently admitted that the lung cancer was going to be the likely victory. He said last year, "My condition is described as static and has not altered since my last bout of chemotherapy... I am going to die sooner rather than later. But then everyone has to go sometime and I have enjoyed every minute."The legendary trainer is widely considered to be a gentleman of the sport, and originally made his name as a deep-lying forward during the 1950's when he represented west London club Fulham. He bragged a promising strike-rate and transferred to West Bromwich Albion during the middle of the decade, before returning to the Cottagers in 1962.He turned to management in 1968, representing Fulham, Ipswich - where he helped the team excel, England - where he gave the nation the greatest hope of glory since 1966, PSV Eindhoven, Sporting Lisbon, FC Porto, Barcelona, and Newcastle United. With Ipswich, he took an undesired outfit into a period of sustained success that saw Town pick up two League runner-up medals, an FA Cup winners medal, and an UEFA Cup winners medal. His exploits with the Tractor Boys earned him the Three Lions post, where he was to famously end up branding Diego Maradona a "rascal" for his hand-of-God goal, and four years later he consoled Paul Gascoigne following an unsuccessful penalty shoot-out in the semi-final of Italia '90. He won two Dutch titles with PSV, championships with Porto, and a European Cup Winners Cup with Barca. The Bobby Robson Foundation was set up on March 2008 after he was diagnosed with cancer for the fifth time. He had defeated the disease in the early 1990's, when he contracted bowel cancer, and a malignant melanoma. Despite his deteriorating condition, he still travelled to see his beloved football clubs in the north-east, and could often be found - sporting a hat and in good spirits - cheering on teams such as Newcastle United. His passion for the game endeared him to millions.

As mentioned in the article Sir Bobby will leave us with two famous expressions. One was when Maradonas goal was allowed in Mexico 86 and the other when Gazza was yellow carded in Italia 90.I remember Lineker gesturing to the bench that Gazza wa crying.
Also he remains as the most successful England Manager. He was better than Sven, Keegan....and came the closest since 66 on lifting the World Cup and it was he that gave Fat Ronaldo the cookie jar at Barcelona
"Cantona retired,Keane retired,Beckham was sold, Ronaldo was sold. We dont worry. The only time we will worry is when Sir Alex Ferguson retires"- MTNS "GO" He awaits a response from Cell C Cavendish Square in Cape Town
Guys that have visited Anfield and watched Xabi Alonso play have deemed him as extraordinary. His Vision and passing ....second to none. Whats more is that he and Macherano form the engine of the Liverpool midfield. You cannot even think what will happen to Liverpool if these two leave. And sadly they are both linked with moves away to Spain. Can you imagine that Macherano and Alonso gone. I met Goolaiks Surtee yesterday.Okes hardcore Liverpool. He was looking sad. First thinh he asked me "Is Alonso Gone".Question is Will he Leave or will they leave and lads from the KOP...What will the effects be if these two midfield maestros have left Anfield. Worrying times ahead.
And knowing f#4ken Benitez he will rest his hopes on F#4ken LUCAS!
Well, Its Pre Season and whats Pre Season on the blog without a bit of Baboo and Bhenny. For those new on the blog they are advise columnists.Baboo is just a regular, wild obnoxious man and Bhenny a real liberal....the type that believes women are great, must be independent and a true Liberal.
Anyway here was the question posed to our columnists
"Dear Baboo and Bhenny. My name is Jose and I am from Spain and working in South Africa for a year. I am good looking and I have dated many South African Women. However I find that whenever I have dated an Indian women and its time to pay the Bill,They just sit and act like theres no bill, leaving me to pay for it,which I dont mind.I just wanna know.Do all Indian Women do this or have i just dated the wrong ones. Please Help?
BHENNY: Jose. This is not Europe. And its not culture. Its the right thing to do. In SA we respect women and its the chivalrous thing to do.And its the Gentlemanly thing to do usually, here in our place, its the guy that pays the bill. they said its a sign of being a gentleman. but now, people are more open-minded and women don't mind if they pay the bill sometimes or share it with the guy. for me, during the courting stage, I prefer if the guy pays the bill. having me to share or pay the whole bill on a date would turn me off and I'd stop going out with him. for me, paying the bill is part of impressing the girl and pleasing her. now if we're already going steady, I'd be open to share or pay the whole bill. sometimes its nice to treat the guy and make him feel special as a boyfriend. Also sometimes you must be smart and pay ladies,It releaves all the sexuall tension. Far too many times the guy would expect something for a night out. By me paying, it basically told him, I didn't owe him anything and I just wanted spend time with him. But this theory only applies if you know he is only after one thing
BABOO: You know what Jose. You are so ritte.Il tell you why. Since Goribabi passed on,it was aparteheid days. But with the cosmopolitan SA I Begun dating women of other cultures. And when I have dated white, black,Chinese etc I swear that when the Bill arrived they reached out in their pockets and said can they at least go half. Now I wouldnt let them pay either way but the thought of them suggesting it just melts my heart. And whenever I have dated Indian aunties...they just sit there. The Bill comes and they look at the fish tank or their shoes. Its like its not f#$en there. But when the food comes..their eyes light up and they activate their guidance system and zone in on things like Decor and the food. But when the f#4ken bill comes they guidance system is switched off and they f#4ken look at everything but the Bill. They dont even enquire....How much the food was,Nuthing. They look at you like when God created you the man.He created you with the soul purpose of Paying the Bill.i mean at least offer. Thats all.Just Ask Can I help you with that.Thats all.Its just a simple action. But no!Dont get me wrong. We wont let them pay.All Im saying Jose is that Indian Women should offer. Thats all. All the Indian Women you and I have dated have one thing in Common. They have NOT OFFERED. I mean f34k Chivalry. Those days are gone. These days women earn more than man. Is that Chivalrous. Its a womens world man.But you tell me with their smart cars and clothes from MANGO they cant even OFFER...NOT PAY OFFER. THATS ALL O-----F-----F----E-----R---.Offer to pay the Bill. And you know whats the Beauty part is that they all play toward their World Cup Final.Villa Mora. They want to play at Wembley Stadium and FNB but they dont know how to kick a ball. They cant offer at MUGG and BEAN but they want to drain you at Villa Mora. Going to VillaMora with an Indian WOMEN is like going to a bank and taking out a BOND.Same thing.Have I made my point! Readers please share your views pertaining Joses question.
VODACOM CHALLENGE CUP KAISER CHIEFS VS MANCHESTER CITY
On Saturday the lads and I went to the Vodacom Challenge Final between Man City and Kaiser Chiefs. It was great with the lads as always and even better when Chiefs Won. The fans were amazing, atmosphere incredible again.
The f#4k up was though we left at 13:30 .....kick off at 3. Bumper to Bumper trffic from Woodmead with the construction etc. A f#4king nitemare and a real shlep.Very frustrating.perhaps we should have left earlier. But by the team we found our gate, parked the cars etc.First half was down. But nevertherless....Half a loaf of bread is better than none...and we saw a Chiefs Victory. And the Chiefs Fans were rampant. Also again good to see guys from the Premiership on our soils. Although City were shite and didnt impress....it was fantastic. Pity we didnt see Carlos Tevez. But overall was fantastic being with the lads and Chiefs maintain their great record in this Competition.
Now Faaiz Oz embarked on this mission to paste Adebejour. That was his main purpose. He made a banner for some gunner fans in UK. Oz hung it up on the top tier and continued to bash Adebejour throughout the game. He said good riddens to Addy as he was shit.
Authorities duely removed the banner and tore it up.They said its not allowed, so Oz set out to the tunnel to pummel Adebejour when he walked past. I tried my best to capture this and the video doesnt do justice.Adebajor walked through the tunnel twice and Oz BELTED HIM.In the video you can see him stretching down and giving Addy a mouthful
I said to OZ.You wrong, The owe pulled you guys out of shit plenty times. He disagreed and myself and Mo Cassim believe now that Luca Toni is better than Adebajor
Telkom Charity Cup votes surpasses the one million mark
The Premier Soccer League and its partner, Telkom, are ecstatic with the news that voting for the 2009 Telkom Charity Cup exceeded the one million mark. By the close of the vote lines at midnight last night, a total of 1 070 978 sms and telephone votes were captured. Organizers are hoping to crack the R5 million rand mark for charity in this year’s tournament. “I’m delighted at the response by our local fans for this event and must also acknowledge those fans from abroad that voted for their favourite teams,” said PSL CEO, Kjetil Siem. “What’s even more remarkable is that we have captured so many votes in a short space of time due to launching only after the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup.” “The overall record of 1 349 587 votes was set in 2006, but in that year fans had 12 more days to submit their votes and I have no doubt that if we had an extra 12 days, the record would’ve been shattered,” added Siem. “The unwavering support of the soccer fans, their generosity and willingness to mobilise for a worthy cause, whether by vote or by the purchasing of a ticket, have inspired us to remain committed to the soccer spectacular. Added to this is our desire to continue making a difference in the lives of those who suffer hardship.” said Adv Ouma Rasethaba – Telkom’s Chief of Corporate Governance. Tickets for the event at Royal Bafokeng Stadium is still on sale at Computicket. For more information on the Telkom Charity Cup, visit http://www.psl.co.za/ or http://www.charitycup.co.za/
Contador's reign on Tour expected to last Lance Armstrong became the second-oldest rider to reach the Tour de France podium when he finished third on Sunday, but it's a rider 11 years his junior who is set to write the next chapter in cycling's book of records. Join the Tour de France Dream Teams and win great prizes from Oakley The 26-year-old Alberto Contador of Spain claimed his second victory in the cycling's premiere event after dominating his rivals to win his fourth consecutive Grand Tour with devastating attacks in the mountains and a display of power in the time trials. At his age, the seven-time champion Armstrong had never won the 106-year-old race. Throughout three grueling weeks of intense rivalry, the Spaniard showed his determination and his will to win by withstanding the constant pressure applied by his Astana teammate Armstrong. Armstrong, back to competition this season after three and a half years in retirement, quickly realised he wouldn't be able to unsettle his younger rival on the road and challenged him mentally. Armstrong criticised his teammate's strategy following the first mountain stage in the Pyrenees, hinting that the Contador was running against the team's common interests. He then revealed tensions within the Astana team due to their rivalry, and even after securing the yellow jersey in the Alps, Contador was criticised by his team for his so-called poor tactical choices. Asked Sunday on French TV what the hardest moment in this race, Contador said: "It was in the (team) hotel." "It has been an especially difficult Tour for me, but I savour it and it is more special because of it," he said after the prize ceremony. But the Spaniard didn't even take a tumble and was so dominant in adversity that his reign on the Tour seems designed to last some time. "Contador is first of all a great climber, very elegant and flowing," Tour director Christian Prudhomme said. "But he also showed a great strength of character." Armstrong, who said he will try his luck again next year on the Tour with his new RadioShack team, acknowledged Contador's superiority. "Contador is that good, so I don't see how I would have been higher than that, even in the other years," said Armstrong, who won the Tour seven consecutive times from 1999 to 2005 before retiring. "I think his performance this year would have beaten my performances in '01 and '04 and '05." Contador already is one of cycling's greats, having won all three Grand Tours of France, Italy and Spain, something Armstrong never achieved in his career. And on the Champs-Elysees, he handed Armstrong his first defeat on the race since 1999. "It was a hard Tour," said Contador, who had to sit out last year when Astana was banned because of previous doping scandals. "Before leaving, I knew I had to be ready both physically and mentally. At the end of each stage, I said 'one day less'. There were tensions, but the situation has normalized. And I am very happy with the result." According to Armstrong, the Contador has the potential to become a five-time Tour winner. "Well, he's that good and he's not that old, so you can do the math," Armstrong said. Even if Armstrong is expected to be back on the race in 2010 with a strong team fully dedicated to his ambitions, Contador's greatest rival in the future is likely to be Andy Schleck of Luxembourg. At only 24-years of age, the climber finished the race in second place, 4 minutes and 11 seconds behind Contador. He has now twice won the Tour de France's white jersey awarded to its best rider under 25, and became the first rider to take the shirt twice since 1997 tour winner Jan Ullrich, who won it three times between 1996 and 1998. "I'm coming back to take the yellow jersey," the younger Schleck of next year. "Alberto showed this year that he was the strongest, the real boss of the peloton. I have much respect for him, but next year I'm coming to win." Armstrong, who will be approaching 39 years of age next July, would bet on Contador in his duel with Schleck. "He time trials a lot better," he said of the Spaniard. "Andy's time trialing I suspect will improve. He's a little younger. With young athletes, you never know how they respond to what comes their way. Alberto is pretty serious and hardheaded and competitive, so I think he'll stay focused." Armstrong became the second oldest rider to make the podium after Raymond Poulidor of France achieved third place in 1976 aged 40. Armstrong, however, expects to perform better in 2010 with another season under his belt. "I'm staying positive," Armstrong said. "My level will be a little better next year." Armstrong wants to come to the Tour with a strong outfit, including current teammates Levi Leipheimer and Andreas Kloeden, and together they could challenge Contador. "There's a lot of variables there," said Armstrong. "My condition, his condition, team tactics, tactics of the race ... But that's why we do the race, so we know." Like Armstrong, Contador has rebounded from a brush with death. He nearly died five years ago after a fall during the first stage of the Vuelta a Asturias. Following persistent illness, Contador went to hospital and learned he had a congenital brain problem known as cavernoma. He only returned to cycling the following year, and today carries a large scar running down the side of his head from delicate surgery to correct the problem. The Spaniard's future is still unclear. He has been linked to a move to Spanish team Caisse d'Epargne, while two-time Formula One champion Fernando Alonso has expressed his interest in starting a cycling team with Contador. Whatever he decides, it's almost certain that the Contador-Armstrong rivalry will re-ignite in 2010. "I'm going left, he's going right," Armstrong said. "See you on the start line next year. www.supersport.co.za
Live Hand Grenade Found Outside Liverpool Legend Kenny Dalglish's House Merseyside Police are investigating the discovery of a live hand grenade on a wall outside the home of Liverpool's iconic former player and manager Kenny Dalglish, who has recently returned to work at Anfield in an ambassadorial and youth development role.
The discovery was made at the address in Southport, Merseyside, on Sunday night, by police investigating an ongoing series of incidents, related to witness intimidation, that are completely unconnected to Dalglish.
The Army Bomb Disposal Team were called to the location, which was cordoned off by police.
"The device was removed and made safe and is currently undergoing forensic examination," a Merseyside Police spokeswoman is reported as saying by the Press Association.
"The road remains cordoned off at its junction with Sandringham Road and high-visibility patrols have been stepped up in the area to reassure the public.
"Detectives believe this incident is linked to a series of other recent incidents in this area and not to the owner of the property where the device was found."
The alarm was raised at 10.15pm, but it is unknown whether anyone was in the Dalglish household at the time.
Two men in their twenties were later arrested on suspicion of witness intimidation.

PDV Answers his critics.
So Rugby owes PDV has shut his mouth. UGB who is holiday'ing in Snt Tropez sent a message of congrats to PDV. Shut up and show them on the field. They both met at a moustache parlour and had a chat and PDV listened to UBG. What did UBG say to him....Whatever it was it worked. The two of them used to steal car badges back in the day.

Argentina were the hosts for the 1978 World Cup. Once again England failed to qualify for the World as well as reigning European Champions Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union. Interestingly Sri Lanka withdrew from the 1978 World Cup as they could not pay the entrance fee.
The format of the World Cup remained the same as in 1974 with 4 Groups of 4 in the First Phase of which the top 2 in each group qualify for 2nd Group Phase consisting of 2 groups of 4. The winners of the 2 groups qualify for the finals and the runners up for the 3rd place playoff.
There was controversy surrounding Argentina being the hosts for the World Cup as they had suffered a military coupe in 1976. Many nations were considering not coming to the Competition due to this, most notably the Netherlands. Eventually all nations that qualified came, however Johan Cruyff the Dutch superstar was not present for the Dutch team. He later refuted that he did not come for political reasons surrounding Argentina but rather due to personal reasons.
The official mascot for the World Cup 1978 was Gauchito. Group 1 Group 1 was probably the toughest group of the entire opening phase containing Italy, favourites France with Platini, Tresor & Co, Hosts Argentina led by captain Passarella, Osvaldo Ardiles & Kempes. Coach Luis Menotti of Argentina had decided to leave out 17 year old superstar Diego Maradona out of the squad due to his young age. Both the Italians and hosts Argentina beat France and Hungary to qualify before the final round of games. France took consolation by beating Hungary in the final game 3-1 wearing a borrowed green & white stripe shirts from local club Kimberley as there was a mix up over the kits.
In the decider for the top of the table Italy overcame hosts Argentina thanks to a Bettega winner.
Group 2 Defending Champions West Germany began the tournament with a goalless draw against Poland. The opening ceremony was quite spectacular. In the other game Tunisia became the first African team to win a game at the FIFA World Cup by beating Mexico 3-1. Poland the beat Tunisia 1-0 thanks to aLato winner and Mexico 3-1 with Boniek scoring 2 and Deyna scoring another. West Germany without Beckenbauer, Gerd Muller and Overath were not the same force but still managed to whip Mexico 6-0 with new star Karl Heinz Rummenigge scoring twice. They were then however surprisingly held by Tunisia to a goalless draw which resulted in them finishing second to Poland.
Group 3 Brazil were undoubtedly the favourites to win Group 3 with new sensation Zico leading their attack and Rivelino still in the team but now more as a midfielder. The Brazilians were controversially held to a 1-1 draw by Sweden in their opening game as the referee blew for full time just as Zico headed a goal which would have been the winner. Brazil then failed to beat Spain while Asutria beat both Spain 2-1 and Sweden 1-0. This meant that the below par Brazilians had to beatAustria in the final game to ensure qualification and did so 1-0. However although on equal points with Austria, Brazil finished 2nd on goal difference.
Group 4 Group 4 favourites had to be the Netherlands even though Cruyff was missing. Under new coach Austrian Ernst Happel the Netherlands beat newcomers and Asian champions Iran 3-0 with Rob Rensenbrink scoring a hatrick. South Americans Peru also got a good 3-1 victory over Scotland with Cubillas scoring a brace. Peru and the Netherlands then played to a goalless draw. In the final group games Peru thumped Iran 4-1 to finish top of the group with Cubillas scoring ahatrick to take his tally to 5 goals which made him the first player to score 5 goals in 2 World Cups after his 5 in the 1970 World Cup. Scotland with the likes of Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness were surprised by Peru in their opening game and held by Iran in their 2nd game leaving them an uphill task of beating theNetherlands 3-0. They did however beat the Netherlands 3-2 with Archi Gemmel scoring 2 goals the 2nd of which was a brilliant solo goal. Once againScotland were eliminated on goal difference.
Group A The 2nd Group Phase Group A consisted of only European Teams. 1974 Runner Up Holland blasted Austria 5-1 in their opening game while West Germanyand Italy played to a goalless draw. In a rematch of the 1974 final West Germany and Netherlands drew 2-2 while Italy beat Austria 1-0. Austria salvaged some pride by surprisingly beating the West Germans 3-2 and ending their title defence. The Netherlands beat Italy 2-1 to qualify for their second successive World Cup Finals with Ernie Brandts scoring 2 goals, 1 for Italy and 1 on the right end of the pitch for the Netherlands. Ari Haan got the winner.
Group B Group B was essentially a battle between South American powers Brazil and Argentina. Both won their opening games with Brazil beating Peru 3-0 andArgentina beating Poland 2-0 thanks to a Mario Kempes brace. The South American Rivals Brazil & Argentina then played to a violent and heated goalless draw. In Poland’s 1-0 victory over Peru, Peru’s goalkeeper Ramon Quiroga received a yellow card in Poland’s half for a foul on Lato. Now for the controversial final round of games. Brazil were drawn to play Poland in the afternoon and won the game 3-1. As hosts Argentina scheduled all their games to be in the evening which created an unfair advantage for them as they knew what result they needed. Argentina needed to beat Peru 4-0. The game was won 6-0 by Argentina and many felt that Peru made it very easy for Argentina. Their was a lot of suspicion surrounding the result as many, especially the Brazilians, felt that Peru were illicitly induced to not try too hard as well as the fact that Peru’s goalkeeper Quiroga was born in Argentina.
Third Place Playoff
Brazil beat Italy with the likes of Dino Zoff and Paolo Rossi 2-1 to finish 3rd. Brazil consider them to be the “moral champions” of the 1978 World Cup as they had not lost any of the matches throughout the competition as well as the controversy of Argentina qualifying ahead of them.
Final The final was held in Buenos Aires at the Estadio Monumental. Once again Argentina stirred up controversy before the match by questioning the legality of the plastered wrist of Rene van de Kerkhof. The Dutch accused the Argentines of using stalling tactics to delay the match as well as allowing tension to build up in front of a hostile Buenos Aires Crowd. Mario Kempes opened up the scoring for Argentina only for Dick Nanninga to snatch a late equaliser to take the game into extra time. Rob Rensenbrink almost won the game for the Netherlands in stoppage time but only managed to hit the post.
In Extra Time Argentina scored 2 goals, 1 from Bertoni and a second from Mario Kempes which was his 6th goal of the tournament make him top scorer.
The Netherlands had lost their second consecutive final and once again it was to the host nation. The Netherlands were furious over Argentina’s controversial actions as well as many dubious referee decisions and refused to take part in the post match award ceremony.
An interesting fact about the 1st, 2nd & 3rd place finishers, Argentina, Netherlands and Brazil was that they all finished as runner up in the first group phase.
Argentina had won the first ever World Cup Title and the confetti –strewn cauldron as well as Buenos Aires were celebrating. Captain Daniel Passarella became the first Argentine to lift up the FIFA World Cup Trophy.
"AT MANCHESTER UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB, AN OLD SAYING SAYS,THAT WHOEVER WORE THE MAGICAL NUMBER 7 JERSEY WAS CONSIDERED THE KNIGHT OF THE NUMBER"
Look at this sorry site.Anyway I must stop moaning now and Owen is a MANC. As hard as that may sound. Met a Liverpool Toppie at a braai and the timer was gutted. He kept on saying "I thought if he left,Hed come to liverpool. So the question is fast disappearing of whether or not Owen is a crock. Rashid BC mentioned to me that this is the first time in many a moon that Owen is having a full pre season work out. And he has scored twice. Like I said if he gives the MANCS 20 + in the season its JOB DONE. And Owen is vying for an England place. To me the boy means business this year.
Owen also revealed that he was quite shocked that Fergie asked him to wear the number 7 jersey. And that number has been graced by what is termed as the magnificent 7 before Owen. And everyone who wore this number for Manchester Utd were class and in a league of there own. George Best, Willie Morgan,Steve Coppel,Bryan Robson,Eric Cantona,David Beckham and of course Penaltinho. This is a tough legacy to break. And now Owen.So Will he continue the run of the magnificent 7 or will he curse this number for many years to come. Thats pressure if you ask me. Have a look at the video below on the MANCS magnificent 7, synonymous to the great 1960 epic Western about 7 men protecting a Mexican Village from Bandits, that starred Yul Breyner, James Coburn,Steve McQueen,Robert Vaughn and Charles Bronson
Im no MANC fan, but researching this video, gives you the goose bumps, and makes you aknowledge that MANC HATER OR NOT...Whoever graced this number.......were indeed the Knights of Football. Enjoy this video, the soundtrack..and MANC Fans dont ever say I dint post anything quality about the MANCS.....Enjoy boys

In theVodacom Challenge Orlando pirates beat Man City 2-0. Maybe it was the new Pirates kit. Maybe City were adjusting to Polokwane but Pirates were much quicker to the ball and City were surprised at Pirates pace. Now its Kaiser Chiefs for Man City and after securing the signing of Adebejour,City will look to redeem themselves.
In other friendlies Michael Owen scored for the MANCS. As I mentioned if Owen bags them 15 goals plus,Its job done. But who would have ever thought that we will live to the day we seen Michael Owen wearing this

Azee and Seth I still even have my Greg Lemond Team Z Jacket. But the tour has been amazing. The toughest endurance sport ever. I met a few cyclists lately especially local owes that have been doing the Argus etc. They say that to compete in the tour you have to be juicing or on some sort of substance. Is this true?

A while ago the TIMER(my father) pulled out this box from his cupboard. Full of 1974 World Cup memmorabillia. Some awesome stuff.coins, signatures, match programmes. Yes he was there. He made the trip in 1974. Amazingly though in 1974 He went to a week in London, quarters, semis and final and 4 more days in London, accomodation, all expenses paid, flights alles for ya Believe it ot not R700. The toppie was there to see Total Football and greats like Cruyff,Neeskens,Muller,Breitner and Beckenbaur. He often talks of that magical spell where the Dutch kept passing the ball for two minutes before the Germans even touched the ball. Till today the toppie and his bras keep on saying What a Master Cruyff was. A total genius in midfield. And Beckenbauer also Class they say. He could read a game, was versatile and more importantly was his estimation of an opponent. He made it look simple.
Another interesting thing was that the Timer reckons on their way back to the hotel from the Stadium he pulls up at a newspaper vendor and it was already printed in the latest edition. Germany World Champions....This was way back in 1974. He also reiterated Europes Transport which was jacked as far as 1974. And always cherishes the fact that he has been for a World Cup.

WEST GERMANY 1974
TOTAL FOOTBALL AND ZEE GERMANS DO IT AGAIN West Germany were the hosts for the 10th FIFA World Cup. It would be the first time that the new World Cup Trophy would be presented after Brazil whowere the first nation to win the World Cup 3 times kept the Jules Rimet Trophy forever.
In qualification Big Guns England, France & Spain all failed to qualify for the World Cup. The official Mascots for the 1974 West Germany were Tip & Tap.
The tournament format had changed quite a bit since the last World Cup. The opening round remained the same with 4 groups of 4 which the top 2 teams from each group qualified for the next round. However the 2nd round was not a knockout format but rather a further group phase with 2 Groups of 4 teams each. The winner of each of those groups qualified for the finals and the runners up for the Third Place Playoff. The tournament was overshadowed by heavy rains and water-logged pitches almost to the extent of being unplayable at times.
Group 1 Group 1 contained both hosts West Germany as well as East Germany who were participating in the World Cup for the first time. Hosts West Germany were already in disarray before the start of the tournament as their were internal disagreements between players and management over bonuses and payment. Both the Germans started off with victories, West Germany beating Chile 1-0 and East Germany beating their fellow first time participants Australia 2-0. The hosts then blasted the Australians 3-0 while Chile held East Germany to a 1-1 draw. In the final group games Australia drew 0-0 with Chile meaning the highly politically charged match between West & East Germany was purely for pride as both teams had already qualified. In the only ever World Cup Tournament encounter between the two Germans, East Germany succeeded and topped the group thanks to a late Sparwasser goal leaving the Mighty West Germans embarrassed with their superstars such as Beckenbauer, Muller & Overath. However there was speculation that West Germany had lost the match so that they avoided the mighty Dutch and defending champions Brazil in the next Group round.
Group 2 Defending Champions Brazil played the opening game of the tournament as Champions, however this time without the Great Pele, but still had Jairzinho &Rivelino from their 1970 success. Brazil were however held to a goalless draw by Yugoslavia. Scotland beat first time Southern African participants Zaire 2-0.Yugoslavia gained confidence from holding off the mighty Brazilians and thumped Zaire 9-0. Brazil were then once again held to a goalless draw, this time byScotland. Scotland and Yugoslavia played to a 1-1 draw while Brazil beat Zaire 3-0 and a bizarre incident occurred in this game where Zaire defender Ilungaraced out from the defensive wall while Brazil were preparing to take a free kick to clear the ball up the field. This meant that Scotland, Yugoslavia & Brazil were all tied on 4 points each and were separated on goal difference which meant Scotland became the first ever team to exit a World Cup tournament undefeated.
Group 3 Group 3 had undoubtedly one of the favourites for the tournament in the Netherlands with their new brand of attractive football known as Total Football led bycaptain Johan Cruyff and Coach Rinus Michels. Total Football was a football strategy that did away with outfield players having a fixed position but rather players become defenders, midfielders or forwards as the situation required. Johan Cruyff, Johan Neeskens, Jonny Rep, Rob Rensenbrink, Ruud Krol & AriHaan were entertaining the world with their new brand of football. The Clockwork Oranje were magnificent in their performances and won the group with victories over Uruguay (2-0) and Bulgaria (4-1) while Sweden managed to contain them to a goalless draw and qualify along with the Dutch to the next phase.
Group 4 Another team creating waves with their impressive football were Poland with the likes of Lato & Deyna in their squad. Poland beat all teams that crossed their path in convincing manner with a 3-2 victory over Argentina, a 7-0 hiding given to World Cup first timers Haiti and a 2-1 victory over the Italians. In the opening game of the Group little known Haiti took the lead against Italy early on and ended Dino Zoff’s record run of not conceding for over 1142 minutes for the Italian national team. Italy however went on to win 3-1. The Italians then drew 1-1 with Argentina who then went on to beat Haiti 4-1 and qualify 2nd ahead of the Italians on goal difference.
Group A
TOTAL FOOTBALL AT ITS BEST
The 2nd Group Phase Group A was definitely a hard group to be in with defending World Cup Champions Brazil, their South American challengers Argentina, The East Germans and off course the Brilliant Dutch. In the opening games of the 2nd Phase Group, The Netherlands Total Football were flying high with a breathtaking display of Magical Football against the Argentines. The Dutch made Argentina look like a second rate team with Cruyff scoring twice and defenderKrol scoring to demonstrate the Total Football philosophy. Brazil were also finding their feat and beat both the East Germans 1-0 and Argentina 2-1 with their 1970 members Rivelino and Jairzinho scoring the goals. The Dutch 2-0 victory over East Germany meant that the final match between them and Brazil would act as semi-final with the winner qualifying for the finals. Once again Total Football took control in a violent game with rough tackles. Cruyff again was the leader and both he and Neeskens scored to ensure that the Dutch were the team to eliminate the South Americans from repeating their success.
Group B Hosts West Germany after their shock defeat to neighbours East Germany got their campaign back on track with a 2-0 victory over Yugoslavia and a 4-2 victory over Sweden. Poland continued from their 1st Group Phase success and beat Sweden 1-0 and Yugoslavia 2-1 to set up a virtual semi-final with hostsWest Germany in the final Group Game. The deciding game between Poland and West Germany only went ahead after the Fire Department had soaked enough water from the Water-logged Pitch in order to make the surface playable. A single Gerd Muller strike sent the West Germans through to the final at the expense of Poland. This was Gerd Muller’s 13th World Cup goal which meant that he had equalled Just Fontaine’s record of the most goals ever scored at the FIFA World Cup.
Third Place Playoff Poland and Brazil challenged for the right to finish 3rd at the 1974 World Cup. It was Poland who came out on top thanks to Grzegorz Lato’s winner which took his tally for the competition to 7 which would make him top scorer for the tournament.
Final Hosts West Germany, defending European Champions, with class players such as goalkeeper Maier, Berti Vogts, Paul Breitner, Wolfgang Overath, GerdMuller and lead by one of the greatest footballers ever Franz Beckenbauer were in the finals with this brilliant team as underdogs surprisingly. Their opposition,Holland, were causing waves at the World Cup with their beautiful new brand of football known as Total Football. Lead by Captain and Legend Johan Cruyffthe Dutch swept all before them and were outright favourites to win the competition. Not many would have bet against Netherlands winning their first title.
The final began as expected with the Dutch Total Football philosophy being displayed in true style as the first goal of the final came from Holland within just 2 minutes before the Germans had even touched the ball. Cruyff at the end of a string of countless passes burst through the defence with one of his amazing runs only to be fouled in the penalty area. Neeskens stepped up and converted the penalty. The game was already looking ominous for the Germans as the Dutch were already dictating and mesmerising the Germans.
However the Germans, like 20 years earlier, showed their true fighting spirit and battled their way back into the game. Midway through the first half the Germans were awarded a controversial penalty which was converted by Paul Breitner who spontaneously stepped up to take the kick. These 2 penalties were the first in a World Cup final match. This goal gave the Germans heart and they began to push for a goal as well as control the game. Berti Vogts was now stuck to Cruyffand succeeded in his task of subduing the brilliant Dutchman. With half time looming the Germans surprisingly took the lead through Gerd Muller. This goal was Gerd Muller’s 14th in the FIFA World Cup and obviously most important and memorable as it turned out to be the winner as well as the goal that would make him the all time top scorer at the FIFA World Cup.
The 2nd half produced many chances for both sides including a disallowed goal from Gerd Muller. In the end the West Germans had defeated the Dutch and their impressive Total Football system. West Germany had become the first and only team to date to win the FIFA World Cup as reigning European champions. Johan Cruyff and Total Football with their breathtaking and beautiful football displays were defeated by the classy West Germans.
Captain Franz Beckenbauer and Coach Helmut Schon holds aloft the new FIFA World Cup Trophy for the first time.

Liverpool Held To Draw In Opening Pre-Season Friendly It wasn't an ideal first game back for the Reds...Chris Myson 15 Jul 2009 23:00:00
Photo Gallery Zoom Glen Johnson becomes Liverpool's latest signing as he is unveiled by boss Rafael Benitez Related Links Teams Liverpool Liverpool were held to a 0-0 draw by Swiss outfit St Gallen tonight as their pre-season campaign got off to a frustrating start. The Reds had the better of the game despite a resolute and well organised display from St Gallen, but were unable to make a telling breakthrough. In what was the first match of a lengthy pre-season, manager Rafael Benitez was keen to experiment, blooding a number of youngsters as he made do without all his Spain players, including Xabi Alonso, due to their Confederations Cup involvement in South Africa, as well as the absent Argentina captain Javier Mascherano. Perhaps the main talking point from the match will be the banners from travelling Liverpool supporters urging the Spanish tactician not to sell Alonso, their midfield playmaker, who is being chased by Real Madrid. New signing Glen Johnson made his debut for the Premier League runners-up, coming off the subsitutes’ bench and putting in a good performance despite having to fill in at left-back. Indeed, he came close to marking the occasion successfully as he flashed a shot across the face of goal. Yossi Benayoun - fresh from signing a new contract at Anfield - was one of the better performers, forcing an important late save from St Gallen goalkeeper Reto Bolli. Over the course of the game the Reds used three shot stoppers of their own as Diego Cavalieri, David Martin and Peter Galacsi appeared, but none were put under too much pressure. Benitez’s men return to action on Sunday where they move on to the capital of Austria and meet Rapid Vienna. Chris Myson, Goal.com
