Johannesburg - Cricket South Africa (CSA) said on Wednesday the Proteas did not receive death threats on their return from the Cricket World Cup.
Proteas captain Graeme Smith clarified comments he made earlier in an interview with Cape-based radio station KFM about the Proteas' reception when they landed at OR Tambo Airport on April 28. "I hope these remarks were not misconstrued," said Smith.
"I was referring to the reception India got when they returned home from the tournament and reports of incidence of violence that occurred in that country.
"CSA had received calls and e-mails from upset fans about the Proteas performance at the ICC CWC WI 2007.
"You can imagine how we felt coming back home. It was a disappointing period for all of us and our fans. Right now we can only work on improving on the lessons and challenges learnt from our experience.
"We would like to thank all our fans for supporting us throughout the season, which was one of the most successful yet in the Proteas history."
CSA media spokesperson Gordon Templeton confirmed that CSA had received calls and e-mails from disappointed fans, but said there had been no death threats.
"Although some fans expressed their anger and disappointment, many fans welcomed the Proteas home, and expressed their support for the players," said Templeton. source:news24.com
The above was about the furo surrounding Greame Smith when he said on Radio that they have recieved Death Threats. I want to open the floor and look forward to some interesting debate. If we go back and look at the murder of then Columbian Andrez Escobar for scoring an own goal, the world wa shocked at the pressures Sportsmen endure. I wanna ask the owes,What is it that leads to Death Threats. Is it a mad sports fanatic that had too much to ride on because of the loss, Maybe he bet his wife or something. Is it just plain and Simple that South Africa were pathetic and fans were pissed. Amidst the rigours and pressures of pleasing millions around the world, Must Sportsmen be mentally equipped for such a Onslaught. Azee do you recall after the Portugese game in Euro 2000 Becks was lambasted and his vrou took the worst of it. Kevin Keegan was quoted as saying "IF YOU HAD TO HEAR WHAT WAS SAID ON THE WAY TO THE TUNNEL.......".There are obviously countless incidents.
My questions. Is this abuse and threats warranted to Graeme Smith as well as other stars in light of their bad performances.
What makes a fan resort to the level of a death threat.
Is Smith just making excuses and trying to make South African Fans like India and Pakistan.
Then again I seen some media owes in Forsburg around a flat that housed about 300 owes. Maybe it was them that made the death threats. Its a pity Gaf from Lenz cant fone Benitez and threaten. Benitez would be sorry
So Whats the take ?
AND NOW SMITH AND ARTHUR GET TWO MORE YEARS ON THE CONTRACT. I THOUGHT WE NEED FRESH FACES AND CHANGES

I think it all boils down to way too much passion...but senseless passion... basically owes start to honestly view the sport concerned as their religion....it's often the poorer countries (sub-continent, south america), as they don't have much else in life... so sports becomes their life and religion... i think it's as simple as that...
ReplyDeleteFor us Muslims... it's like the Salman Rushdie incident or that cartoon incident... we won't hesitate to threaten a person's life... and we understand it (don't want to debate if its right or wrong, just that we can understand it), because it relates to our religion and we have that much passion towards it...
So if these owes view sport as their religion... you can imagine the emotion and passion they have... they don't draw any lines... sport is the be all and end all for them.
Mombhai
I agree Mombhai.
ReplyDeleteSENSELESS PASSION
But where do we draw the line???
Suicide after your teams loss?
Death threats after your teams loss?
Switching your phone off, locking yourself up, and refusing to take the wife shopping after your teams loss?
The banter on the blog after your teams loss?
Actually having the time to create this blog and update it EVRERDAY?
We all guilty of sensless passion, and I speak about myself first.
In the Global Scheme of things, what function does sport play? Pure empty entertainment?
When last did we actually kick a ball? Can we actually kick a ball?
Im curious to know how each blog member will try to justify his SENSLESS PASSION
ABR
We all guilty of it.But i feel the guys on the blog do it more out of fun.You right when u ask what function does sport play in our lives?
ReplyDeletewe have balls, play ball, and screw with our balls!
ReplyDeleteThe banter on the blog is in the name of fun.
Passion is aquired for what you enjoy! You gotto be passionate about whatever you do, otherwise whats the sense? do u fuck cos you have to or want 2? you not forced into anything u choose not 2 do!
ABR, you my friend should be the last to talk about passion. If i remeber correctly you made remarks abouts pissing on my grave cos we didn't agree on something. This blogg to me is all in the name of fun, giving opposing fans stick when their side doesn't perform. I don't take comments to heart and TRY not to offend anyone.
ReplyDeleteWith regard to national teams facing death threats, thats on a whole other level. My guess would be the money involved in sport. Why would a rational minded fellow wanna sit in jail just cos his side lost.
To those guys they totally go into hibernation when there side loose remeber this, No Team cares what you do if they win or loose, as long as you buying shirts they happy.
As for the S.A cricket setup, Smith should stay in my opinion, but not as captain. We have failed in the past 3 world cups with the likes of pollock, boucher , kallis and the lack of a spin bowler. Is it not time to bring in new faces. No doubt that the three players i mentioned are world class, but time for something new. What have we got to loose.
ABR ARE YOU PASSIONATE WHEN YOU FUCK?
ReplyDeleteARE YOU PASSIONATE IN WHAT YOU DO?
DO YOU TAKE PRIDE IN WHAT YOU DO?
IF NOT YOU MUST BE AN ALIEN FROM MARS I GUESS.
Got to have passion, otherwise why watch! u got too feel the agony of defeat and the ecstacy of victory!
ReplyDeleteThye used to say keano wore his heart on his sleeves and had man utd pumping through his veins. thats how u got to watch . otherwise u a spectator not a supporter!
The sad thing Abt men is senseless passion. And when their passion is threatened they bring sex and religion into it. When they insult they go for the lowest points ever. Rather call each other bitches and tell your bff what bad style they have.. Oh and the hairdo ! Simply revolting! he must come from benoni!Too much tarkari ! Girl_interrupted
