UPSETS AND MORE UPSETS
The ¼ finals once again through the entire rugby fraternity off guard. Big surprises and upsets. The one great thing about the RWC has been the unpredictability of the results. In too many big tournaments these days we sought of no that the winner will come from 2 or 3 teams and the RWC 2007 has been different.
AUS V ENGLAND
The English came good when it counted, They have been horrible at times in the last three years but when it mattered they produced. The out scrummed the ausies and killed them in the forwards. The ausies did not have any good ball to play with. It was not pretty from the English but it was effective. Sad to see legends Gregan And Larkham leave the world scene. What about the “swing low sweet chariots”, awesome only the English can provide that atmosphere!
NZ V FRANCE
As upsets go this was huge. They were cruising 13-0 up with 1 minute to go in the 1st half, and then what happened? They choked. They are like the SA cricket team. The fear of losing got to them and they played a total different game to what they normally play. They kept on with the pick and drive when they normally throw it out wide, The French defense held on and we had a repeat of 1999. the ref made a howler with the French 2nd try as it was a forward pass earlier in the move, but NZ only have themselves to blame. Henry’s contract will not be renewed. They going to be slated back home!
SA V FIJI
We made a meal of beating Fiji. We let it get too open and they punished us. Our defense was terrible at times, too many missed tackles. At 20-20 they had us under the cosh. Pierterson made a superb tackle in the in goal area or else it could have been worse. We struggles against tonga and we made the same mistakes against Fiji. A lot of work needs to be done. Juan Smith has been massive in all the games so far. They wont and that’s what matters but Jake White will be a worried men as the performance was well below par.
SCOTLAND V ARGENTINA
Scotland were brave but the argies were to strong for them. They controlled the game. Hernandez is the best fly half in the world at the moment. It was close at the end but Scotland did have the firepower to consistently trouble the argies.
The semis are going to be superb, we will have a north v south final. Will preview the semis later in the week.

Yup, it was nail-biting stuff. The tackle from JP was the turning point of the game.

ReplyDeleteWho chokes (in rugby) when it matters? Who plays the best brand of rugby but CANNOT adapt to another gameplay when their optimal style is interrupted? Who talks up their chances 4 years in advance and doesnt even get to suck a wooden spoon?
Why should I need to think before I talk? Im just taking the mickey out of 'one' of the best teams in the world...not the best!! Besides, I acknowledge all those accolades that you talk of, all very significant, but the truth is it aint no World Cup!!!

Your nation is devastated and winning the Tri Nations from now till 2011 won't make up for the disappointment of getting knocked out this year.

I got to agree to an extent with All Black guys. They have dominated the sport for the last 4 years. Thye have played a brand of rugby that few others could even dream of playing.They play the game with all 15 interchanging between backs and forwards, sublime to watch! and sad to see that they have to go! we got to give them credit and treat them like any run of the mill team! there record in trinationd and super 12 and 14 speaks 4 itself!

ReplyDeleteThe bottom line is that being World Champs is what matters especially now that long tours and series no longer happen.
Prior to the Tri Nations a benchmark was the All Blacks playing the Springboks in a series of games not just once off. That's the reason why the 97 All Blacks will always be remembered.
People were saying that's it's harder to win the Tri Nations than the WC because of how crap the N Hemisphere teams were looking but that's now come back to bite them.
With all due respect to Graham Henry and his selectors were they too busy building 2 teams that they didn't realise that they didn't have a proper 13. Muliaiana was retreaded from FB just like Cullen in 99. Doug Howlett was playing like a king and gets dropped, so too Chris Jack and Weepu's in the squad prior to the cup and then get's chopped.

ReplyDeleteits like saying because the english teams have been doing so well in european competitions in the last few seasons, the Englsh soccer team is the best in tthe world.... what matters is what happens when you play in the WORLD CUP..... Many of us okes have won freaking tournaments (yes may not be professionals) but at the end of the day.... my trophy collection and the All Blacks have 1 thing in common .NO WORLD CUP WINNERS MEDAL. I support the Boks and wud have loved nothing more then the All Blacks to win if wew didn't, but the sad fact is the have not BMT.
