THE DAY I MET HASHIM AMLA

South Africa beat India in the First Test in Centurion Park. All thanks to devastating bowling from Morne Morkel in the first innings and superb centuries by Hash ,AB and a double ton by Kallis.

I met Hash on the eve before he was due to bat. For my readers Hash is looking Top Class. Man looks physically strong and as always mentally in tune. We chatted for a bit.I said "Century Hash" and  a century he got. I took a two year old kid to meet Hash.This youngster is a friends son and a aspiring Hashim Amla fan.Believe it or not this two year old imitates Hash and he just wanted to meet Hashim Amla.

So I called Hash and set it up. The kid was thrilled. He just sat in Hash's lap and said "Hashim Amla, Hashim Amla" all the time. Hash true to his word made it special for the little lad and gave so much of his time

Its amazing you know to see our youngsters and kids aspiring to be what Hashim Amla is. It just shows the stature and grace that he has brought to World Cricket. Not only is he an icon now for our youngsters but he is a great World Cricketer. And off the pitch he is a remarkable human being that leaves behind a legacy. He has this ambiance and presence about him. That visit to this little kid clearly shows to me what Hashim Amla has become from the day I met him four years ago.

I remember the day clearly. We were in Cape Town staying in the same hotel as the Proteas. I remember the excitement I had. I mean for me Swoosh,an avid Sports fan I respected the dedication and commitment that was needed to reach this high level. and here there was a muslim youngster that was playing Test Cricket for South Africa. He was facing the Worlds best and obviously in  a position that many of us dream to be. I had to meet him.

I remember seeing the team leave towards the Nets from the Hotel.I caught sight of Hash for the first time. He was a long distance away. I was like  a kid meeting his hero. In my excitement I scram to Ntini.I said "Makhaya Call Hash." Makhaya looked at me like I was mad. It was just the excitement.

I missed Hash as he strode away with the team. I immediately called my friend Yousuf Kadwa whos family knows Hash. I said Joey Im at the same hotel as Hash. I have to meet him .Hook it up.

Joey smsed me Hash's number and I sent a text message at about 2pm on New Years Day.

I thought to myself If I get a reply from Hash it would be a bonus. At about 5pm I received a sms saying "Salaams Naseem, Got back from practise .Will meet you in the Lobby at 7pm for tea."

I was excited....I mean, to me I was going to meet a man thats name rings out through every street,masjid and shop. I remember the old timers after Mosque talking about Hashim Amla and the shots that he played etc. I remember the nerves that I felt every time Hash goes to the wicket. I mean this was an icon in his own right. I heard lots of perceptions bout Hash and I was kitted in my usual shorts and Italy kit on holiday mode. When I went down I remember taking off my earring and putting on a tracksuit pants. It just felt right. I was 5 minutes away from meeting Hashim Amla.

Three of us went down and we waited at the Hotels coffee shop. Minutes later a well built lad strolled in....Totally relaxed wearing long shorts and sandals and obviously the distinct beard and a pair of specs. He approached us as I waved and sat down. It was as if we knew Hash for many years. I sat in awe as we chatted for a full hour and sipped on tea. I mean here was a man that has reached the pinnacle of his sport and yet he was the most humble human being ever. Weve never met him but yet he has given us the time of day and attention that we so craved. We chatted about cricket and the journey. I asked Hash so many questions and I kept on processing questions in my head as if to not say the wrong thing. But here was a south african sportsman's focused and so mentally strong and humble as ever. People that passed by took note of him as we sat,some waved,kids came over for a autograph.

I dunno hey,Hash just exudes this ambiance and peace about him. Im sure some of you have met him and can relate.....But there is indeed something special about Hashim Amla.From the moment you meet him. And this made me stress alot more. I mean now that I knew him I didnt want it to stop there.I wanted this friendship to continue.And more so I wanted to be around Hashim Amla from a cricketing and personal perspective. After an hour we said salaams and We said "Hash give  us  a century tomorrow". Hash responded and said "Insha allah.If God wills". He was under a bit of pressure as he needed a 100 after back to back failures.

And in my heart I wanted this remarkable man to score a great 100. For so many reasons,some political,some because of the hardship muslim and Indian sportsman endued in the past because of apartheid and lack of opportunity. That evening we chatted on sms  and with regards to the conversation we ended up at Newlands on a boiling hot day....

And yes we watched Hashim Amla bat that day. And it was the first time I seen him live ever. Hash got a century and I there was an inner happiness that engulfed me that trip. I was just so happy for Hash. More so because I met him and felt this connection. As the years went on our friendship developed. We spend time during his tours and most of our fond memories would be the Newlands Tests and our evening Chaai sessions at Newlands Sun. I even watched Hash embraced by youngsters during a net session on New Years Day

I remember when Hash scored a 40 on a difficult Newlands wicket against England I think. Im not so sure. While we were having tea Graeme Pollock walked in and marched straight to Hash. He stretched out his hand and said "Son even though you scored 40 I have never seen anyone play with such a straight bat before.Well Done"

Years later Hashim has played some mesmerising innings. He is in great form and is a great World Cricketer.

Every time I meet him I still have the same feeling.And thats the feeling I have as the Day I met Hashim Amla.

And I may not have played sports at the highest level,but i certainly played it at a competitive level.I played soccer finals and tennis for Wits B...I felt the nerves and its nothing compared to what our local sportsmen like Hash achieved but I know damn well the commitment and resolve needed to be a great Sportsman.

Another fine Century from Hashim Amla.Years down the line its great to see Hashim convert his innings to centuries.Something which the critics always sharpened their knives about.

Now Hash is a integral part of the One Day team and will be a key figure in the World Cup.

Im gonna write an in depth feature on him soon so more on that later. But Well Done Hashim.

SHOULD SMITH HAVE DECLARED?

What a great feeling,What a moment for all Hash Fans! Hashim Amla has scored his maiden test double hundred and finished not out. What makes it sweeter is that its against the leading test nation India. Great stuff for Hash. I am mighty proud. I can just see Hash earning some dollars for the Deccon Chargers.But all the glory aside it had to happen to a man of this stature.His qualities,his behaviour and  his sublime skill.

It was great to watch and having a Dawaat at my grannys place made it sweeter. All the toppies were smiling and If Hash reads this,Bro our community let alone family were proud.

But of course where there are Indian toppies having Biryani on a Sunday and tea afterwards theres always controversy.

One toppie said How could Fani De Villiers say that Hash was negative. If this comment was true..Cmon vinnege Fanie. It was breathtaking and scored when SA were two down.

And of course the biggest debate was SHOULD SMITH HAVE DECLARED OR LET HASH BAT ON?

I leave it to the blog.Im quite interested to read teh comments.But for now.WELL DONE HASH.....YOU ARE THE MAN.

While I was posting this I found a few owes on facbook and got their views.Heres what they had to say

Had he declared 30 mins or an hour earlier, he cud use the excuse that he wanted to have a bowl at the indians while they're still tired but giving his bowlers 3 overs to bowl at the indians proves it was not the case as over 90% of bowlers require at least 1 over to get into their bowling rhythm, further more, Amla had "the great Greame Pollocks" record in site, "expert commentator Daryll Cullinans" record in site and off course, "our cricketing saviour and national team captains" record in site.He was also on course to become the first south african to score a test triple hundred.

the excuse thats going to come out, is that the team and winning the match is wats most important and i agree, winning must come first, BUT , had it been Kallis, De Villiers or himself batting, would the declaration have come?When he scored his 277, he batted on, selfishly, without regard for the team or winning the match, He had his sights on the record and he gave himself every opportunity to get it.

and if i were captain, i would bat on until the team were bowled out. there was still another 100 -150 runs on offer from our team which woud put us around 700 runs and 2 and a half days to bowl india out on a deteriorating pitch.550 is not a secure score, follow on is around 350 but at 700, the follow on is around 500

if India do bat relatively well in the first innings, then we gotto then bat again and then its a draw but with a lead of 700, india are never gonna score 500 against us.not with 3 new batsmen in the team so it puts us in the driving seat , this declaration has put the ball in indias court to salvage the match in general, all round bad captaincy

I was browsing on Bob Skinstads blog and used this piece.Since Swoosh0018 follow Hash closely I had to put it up

Letter of apology to a true South African hero.



Dear Hashim


I felt I had to write this letter to you and apologise personally for something that has been sitting on my shoulders for some time. Strangely, I thought this guilt would have faded over the years but your actions of late have only confirmed the need for this apology.


I joined South African Breweries in 2003 and was an employee in the marketing department until 2006. I was responsible for handling events of all scales and recognising and leveraging beer-selling opportunities. I real perk to the job was the opportunity to be involved in the major sporting events including the big rugby and cricket Test Matches (free tickets) both of which I follow closely as a devoted and loyal supporter. Being a young, energetic and passionate South African it was my dream job. It was a real privilege being involved in leveraging these prestigious events and being able to rub shoulders with our country’s sporting heroes.


In 2004 I found myself in a moral quagmire when you announced your request not to wear the Castle Lager logo on any of your SA cricket team clothing. I quickly chose the side of the company that had recently adopted me and immediately took a dislike to this “spoiled brat” new kid who refused to wear the logo that had made it possible for him to be where he was. “After all, he was not even there on merit!” That was one of my favourite comments. I suggested to my friends and colleagues that we should we should write to Cricket South Africa and give this Amla guy an ultimatum. He should either accept wearing the logo or pay for his own flights, accommodation and costs that “we” as the sponsor were covering.


I was angry to hear that SAB had graciously granted you permission not to wear any logos on your team clothing and saw this as a point of weakness on the part of the brewing giant. My interest in the games that followed that decision was of a totally different nature as I eagerly watched each performance, waiting for you to fail whilst I passed derogatory comments in your direction. The quicker we could rid our team of this problem the better…….. How wrong I was!


Hashim, since that day you have made it not only incredibly difficult, but nearly impossible for me to back up any of my statements or find truth in any of my comments. Fortunately, through watching you so closely (for the wrong reasons at first) I have enjoyed the privilege of being witness to the blossoming career of a humble, inspirational and talented young man. Your attitude both on and off the field is truly a lesson to every young sportsman and woman and your sportsmanship is unparalleled. Umpires around the world will verify this I am sure when many a tough decision on their part has been made easy by your honesty and decision to walk before the result. Your bravery and selflessness are also apparent in the way you regularly nominate yourself for the dangerous close-catching positions when no one else wants them. Your humility and rational nature has given you the amazing ability to turn negatives into positives – a valuable quality for any team to be able to call on. The way in which you handled a certain Aussie commentator’s crude and prejudiced comments a couple years back now brings a smile to my face and is a real life lesson to all of us.


Thank you for all you have taught me over the last few years, thank you for the way in which you play the great game and for the spirit you play it in.


Thank you for being an inspiration to us and for providing our wonderful country with a true South African hero!


I look forward to meeting you in person one day, being able to shake your hand and hopefully buy you a beer…err, sorry, a Coke.

HASH SPEAKS

Well Im Back.Cape Town was fsublime.Thanks to all that have contributed to our fantastic holiday. The hospitality was purely sublime.I got plenty pictures and well it was the holiday centered around the Ferarri F430. and the rest cannot be mentioned.
From a sporting context..Geez lots has been happening.Cricket,Footie and of course the AFCON CUP.Where do i begin......

Il start the post refelecting on Hashim Bhai.A brilliant 100 and 95 in Newlands. Newlands was terrific.The atmospher incredible.The Barmy Army and the English were there in Hordes.And it was boiling hot.

Il start by making a statement on Hash's behalf. I met him on the Final day and he was exhausted.I also met him before the Test at supper and we chatted about his suspension in the domestic game.I said Hash Why did you get a ban.What Happened.

Hash reflected on the incident and stated that his dissent was by no means of vile language or swearing.He was fielding at the time and just expressed dissapointment at the umpiers decision.He felt hard done by with the decision.But for the record he did not swear or use and obscene language toward the umpire.

SA have to win the final test now and on two occassions Onions has made them cry. Swoosh0018 wishes Hash all the Best in the final Test.

It was a great feeling again to see HASH in superb form and winning the man of the series. He has shown what a talent he is and is the most improved international cricket. We are extremely proud as we support Hash all the way. The Ozzie tour is going to be extremely tough, mentally and physically.

East London - Hashim Amla took his career to yet another new high when he was named MTN man of the series when the MTN three-match series finished at East London's Buffalo Park on Wednesday.
The final match was abandoned without a ball being bowled after heavy overnight and morning rain left the outfield totally flooded. The Proteas' ODI squad thus won the series 2-0 to confirm their ranking as the No 2 team on the ICC world rankings behind Australia.
Amla has won two MTN man of the match awards in recent ODIs against Kenya at the De Beers Diamond Oval and against Bangladesh at Willowmoore Park. On the latter occasion, his 10th ODI, he scored his maiden limited overs century and took his career strike rate above the 90 percent mark.
Amla only made his ODI debut this year when he stood in for Jacques Kallis in the series in Bangladesh and then stood in for Graeme Smith in the away series against England, the home series against Kenya and the first match of the home series against Bangladesh. In the last two matches he has stood in for Herschelle Gibbs.
But there is little doubt that he has now come to stay in the ODI squad.
Amla is undoubtedly one of the most improved batsmen in world cricket over the past year. In the last 13 months he has made 829 runs in 11 Test matches at an average of 48.76. Two of his four centuries have been made in testing away fixtures against India at Chepauk, Chennai, and against England at Lord's.
"I am very happy to have won this award," Amla commented. "I am grateful for the opportunities I have had to open the batting in the ODI side. It is a big boost to my one-day career and I am looking to build on this start in the matches ahead when we play Australia in this format of the game early next year."
Captain Graeme Smith expressed his delight with the way the MTN series had gone. "From a personal point of view I am delighted and relieved to be back on the field again and back in the runs. In the team context it is always nice to start the season with a win and we must now turn our focus to winning the Test series against Bangladesh before we take on Australia."

Firstly I want to say well done to SA for thumping the Kiwis. I mean they bowled them out with a more than a day to spare. So WHY declare.Let HASH go for it. Surely if it were Kallis who is an exceptional player SA would have batted on. In context of the game there was a Full Two Days to bowl the Kiwis OUT. Does anyone agree?

Then again there were some toppies that said Hash batted to slow for his Double Ton and that getting three wickets in fading light was crucial. They said that the Kiwis having fielded for so long were vulnerable in 17 overs? Your views

Also Seth sms'd me on Saturday and I agree with him.Why were the commentators only talking about him being dropped on 2 instead of his exellent batting on Friday.
Dont quote me but I think it was Husain Manack on Radio and I quite enjoyed the dishing they gave to their fellow colleagues. They rose to Hash's defense when his technique was critisised yet again. They said Why is it always that the boy gets flak about this ongoing saga. So many players bat differently.I mean Desmond Haynes and Jonty had no technique but they did the job.

The above is debatable and lets keep it clean and structured guys. ON THE WHOLE THOUGH HASH WE SALUTE YOU AND WE ARE MIGHTY PROUD. EVERYTIME YOU BAT I GET NERVOUS AND THE SUPPORT YOU HAVE IS BIG MY MAN. HASH is a personal friend of mine and I will interview him soon................

HASHIM BHAI-MAN OF THE MATCH

You know since I met Hash in Cape Town I have become very engrossed his innings. As Kaka said We feel more nervous than him probably.During the past couple of weeks he has proved the Critics Wrong. Oh I tell you its a sublime feeling when the critics & pundits dont know where to put their faces. Technique, Technique, The whole time on Supersport and Radio 2000.Only our guys like Aslam Khota said otherwise. What a technique. It gets Hash the MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD. Barry Richards what do you say.Im sure he agrees.

So on behalf of this blog and the loyal supporters We would just like to say WELL SONE HASH,WHAT A PERFORMANCE.

It makes us happy and proud that one of our own achieved this accolade.

WELL DONE HASH

Well I had the priviledge of meeting Hash on Monday evening at our hotel. We sat in the foyer of the hotel having coffee. I must Say . What a owe. Down to Earth and a true ambasador for our Muslim Youth. We spoke for a long while and indeed a highlight of my trip. I said to Hash Dont Worry a hundred is coming at Newlands, It will ease the pressure. And Alhumdullillah the man is 50 NOT OUT and I can sense a Big One Coming. So Insha-allah a century beckons for our man.

I also chatted to Hash about the blog and told him the support that he recieves from it. He also said that he appreciates the tributes and support that he recieves from this blog.

I was coming to work this morning when I heard Joffes Maboi announce the SA Test side to play India. Paul Adams and Niki Boje . What about Thandi Tshabalala. You see this is where our selectors bamboozle me. Give the litie a show now. How many chances are these owes getting. Adams has played test cricket for two years. Gimme a break. Mombhai & Azee what are your guys comments here. Say your piece. Dont let me meet you at Nescafe and then you bas$3rds start complaining................

I have also decided to add to this post a little. Why is it that Bodi was not in the one day squad this year. Color aside the lad has been deserving. Even the freakin Pro 20 the man was Omitted. I met Gummi on Wednesday and we were having the same discussion. Look I know there are also sceptics out there that will criticise my post and selection request which is fair. But on form alone I base my theories.I want to ask the following question


How many chances did Kallis have before scoring?


How many chances did Rudolph have


If Hash fails in the test series, Do you owes think he will be readily given another shot as easily as Kallis, Rudolph Boje. They had about 20?


Dont we have any other spinners in this Country. Instead of Paul Adams I rather take Kieran a India guy that spans with Mamoo. That Owe can turn a f$%ken owe upside down if he could.But Polla, Come on man!

Ntini becomes SA's leading man

South Africa's latest new ball combination, Makhaya Ntini and Dale Steyn, were fittingly rewarded on Tuesday night for their explosive conclusions to an otherwise mediocre season for the national side when they were named as two of the Mutual & Federal South African Cricket Annual's Cricketers of the Year.Ntini and Steyn were paired together for the three Test series against New Zealand at the end of last season, and their firepower enabled South Africa to secure that series 2-0 and thus put a glossy finish on an otherwise disappointing season - particularly in the Test arena in which they lost five of six Tests against Australia.

The three other recipients of the prestigious award made by the annual's editor Colin Bryden last night were wicketkeeper Mark Boucher, who was recognised for the third time, and Hashim Amla and Ashwell Prince, both first time recipients.Ntini became the first player to be recognised five times, having previously shared the record for the most nominations with current teammates Jacques Kallis and Shaun Pollock, and three former players, Clive Rice, Ken McEwan and Allan Donald, who were all rewarded on four occasions.

The 29-year-old from Mdingi in the Eastern Cape richly deserves the recognition which goes alongside Mutual & Federal SA Cricketer of the Year Award he claimed earlier this year.He was by far the national side's outstanding performer during the difficult series against the Australians and claimed 28 wickets in five Tests.He also became the first South African to pick up back-to-back 10 wicket hauls and recorded the best figures by a South African bowler in a one-day international when he snagged 6/22 against the Aussies at Newlands.Boucher was recognised for the first time since 2000 for a season in which his gritty qualities were once again on display. He played one of the most important innings of his career when he made an unbeaten 50 to guide SA to victory in the '438' game at the Wanderers in March.Amla's career continued its upward trend as he marked his return to the South African team with a gutsy century in the second Test against the Kiwis at Newlands.He was also the only batsman to score over 1 000 runs in South African first-class cricket last season. Prince cemented his place in the national team with a determined century in Sydney.That knock elevated his status in the team and he became one of the senior members and was even handed the captaincy for the tour to Sri Lanka when Graeme Smith was forced to withdraw.

Once again Hash has been the focal point of discussions. This time I want to open the floor and see what you owes have to say about this incident.

Apparantly Dean jones has said that he didnt intend for it to be heard on the air. Come On !!! On the Air or not. The comment was said. Materazzi presumably made a terrorist comment, Jones blatantly did this because of Amla's beard.

I admire Hash for his stance of having his beard and not wearing the Castle Logo for religeous reasons.
Bottom Line is How can you make a statement like that in the first place LET alone on National Television. Jones is a sporting professional and argued that this was not meant in a bad way to muslims as most of his friends in the Pakistani Cricket team are Muslims and Have Beards.

Hash you go Boy and We support you 100% Again. The added pressure is now that everytime Hash Will go to the crease This issue will hover above him and make him more famous. I think Hash should use this episode to prove to the Cricketing World the gift and talent that a so called "Terrorist with a Beard" Has!

I think that being suspended and booted for Jones is an accurate decision taken. He should in our terms be LAMBASTED .Supersport and the ICC has condemmed the incident.

Cricket season has crept in and there was an oke giving me sh&t on why there is no Cricket and only World Cup Still. Tomorrow is the first test in Sri Lanka and I am f*&ken proud that HASHIM AMLA is in the team. As I stated earlier from the Supersport Panel to some toppies in the Plaza who were all lambasting him for his technique. The man scores a 100 odd after coming back into the team. I couldnt believe the Supersport Muggs when Hash scored that fifty at the Wanderers. They kept saying that the man Cant play Bouncers. I mean what the F&?5. What has Rudolph, Boje, Dippenar and those okes done.
I mean give a oke a debut in the most intimidating environment in Cricket-Eden Gardens . Come On. Hash was unlucky in India.
BUT I am so glad that the man f*(ked them up and is our best player of spin at the moment.
