WHAT CONSTITUTES BEING GREAT
Upon seeing Biggy and Offside embroiled in a debate of what constitutes a Footballer being great I have been requested to create this post. To me Football is the game of the people, the pinnacle and the ultimate accolade. More often than not there are some players that rise above the rest in World Cups, European Cups and so forth. It encompasses skill, intestinal fortitude, guts and the ability to do things that a common man coudnt fathom on a football pitch. The key to me is a great deal of consistency too. I once heard on 702 about an old toppie who had the priviledge of watching every major competition and game in the World. He stressed that he watched players like Maradona, Pele, Cantona, Best all live. His words were "BUT WATCHING ZINEDINE ZIDANE LIVE was BREATHTAKING. THE THINGS THE MAN DOES WITH A FOOTBALL. HE MAKES IT LOOK SO SIMPLE". Becks once said in a Real Madrid Interview that What Zidane does on the training pitch is unbelievable. There were many greats in my opinion in their respective positions that they adopted on the field. Wenger once said that Kanus size 14's did miracles on the training ground. Look in our backyard we all can do tricks at some point but to do it in front of millions requires a breed of temprement that Great Footballers are born with.
Ive watched Dvd's of some lesser known players and some greats. Like Offside said If you have to see what Le Tissier did on that video you would be amazed. You can go on and on.
So all the Chaps out their Now is the time to hear your views and input into this matter. Two Questions.
1. What makes a player great?
2. Name your all time greatest x11. It doesnt have to be in order of positions. Who would you pick If your life depended on it. I know i will come in for some stick. But I have to include Del Piero in my time, otherwise it wouldnt be my post.
1. Maradona 2. Pele 3. Zidane 4. Cantona 5. George Best 6. Ronaldinho 7. Cannavaro 8. Buffon
9. Henry 10. Del Piero 11 Platini
I dont want to go to back in time because then I will be naming owes like Yashin, Eusebio and Puskas. Il stick with the times

ReplyDeleteA great player is somebody that does ordinary things extra-ordinarily and make it look simple. Why pass backwards when you can shibobo the defender? Also they need to have love for the game,be passionate and be world class in their respective position.
ReplyDeleteBelow is my list. I have selected players that I have seen on television a couple of times, so unfortunately no Pele, Best etc.
1. Buffon (Reliability)
2. Nesta (still plying his trade, but in his time he was solid and dependable)
3. Tony Adams (yes the donkey, ugly but also a leader and great defender)
4. Cantona (arrogant magician)
5. Matt Le Tisser (some of his touches and goals, his only problem... staying at Southampton)
6. Henry (Speed and finess)
7. Zidane (the ball used to stick to his feet and he never seemed to break a sweat. Also a good header!)
8. Ronaldinho (Tricks galore, and brought the showmanship back to the game)
9. Patrick Viera (solid midfielder, those long legs put mileage on the field and broke opposition plays)
10. Roy Keane (a natural leader, he was like a taxi marshall, and turned defense into attack)
11. Dennis Bergkamp (his vision and passing and some of his goals that he has scored, sublime)
Lekker,
