Week 1
Introduction
We hope to create an interactive blog catering for the guys who are pro’s at the sport as well as the novice who goes to a dam to occasionally to wet a line.
Fishing may be divided into a relaxing, chilled out sport or may be very enduring, the choices rest with you. To clarify some terminology that may be used in freshwater angling or fishing in time to come is explained as follows;
1. Tight lines, pap gooiers, pap swaaiers – Generally refers to the guys that want to chill out and catch some carp.
2. Blues or Kurpers – This refers to a fish called a Tilapia. These fish are generally caught on light tackle presenting an excellent fight. This is a bit of a messy sport because you have to use earthworms or even a brown bread mixture.
3. Bassfishing – Black Bass, scientifically known as Micropterus Salmoides. The fish is not indigenous to South Africa. This poses a problem of the preservation of this species. The fish is caught using artificial lures and plastic worms.
4. Flyfishing – As the name suggests, and no, you don’t sit the whole day and catch flies, but you merely try and cash fish using artificial flies. This sport was pre-dominantly associated with trout. Today, this method of fishing can be used to catch Carp, Blue kurper, Black bass, Yellowfish and even Barbel (cat fish).
In the weeks to come we will try and discuss various topics relating to the various kinds of fishing. This is an interactive blog and welcomes any questions, suggestions as well as topics from our readers.

ReplyDeleteA chick, havent caught one like those for years, now they catch me. I can teach you how to catch some MALAWI CICHLIDS and as you thought, NO, they are not desperate loose young girls from Malawi, but are freshwater fish usually kept as pets in a fish tank. They but are pronounced SEEK LITS.

Salaams Yusuf, The bass that I have in the picture is a 3.9kg caught in Zimbabwe. The biggest that our click has caught in Zim is a 4.45kg. Our local record is much smaller and again, in our click, the biggest is a 3.2kg caught at a dam called Albert Falls, PMB. Thanks
ReplyDeleteOupa Fats, Salaams, Bass amongst others are probably one of the cleanest freshwater fish that you would find. Reason being, Bass are predators and do not sift sand through their gills in search for food. This eliminates the "muddy" taste in the fish. There is some kind of wastage pipe that runs through the old golf course. At one stage, it was believed that waste had filtered into the dam. From a health point of view, I would be careful. Thanks
ReplyDeleteVOONDOO BARBERS, salaams, First we need to identify the terminology. In the days of oom Jan and Piet, they refered to a particular kind of fish as BARBERS, or BAARBERS. In the new day and age many people refer to them as BARBELS. In actuall fact a barbel is a slender whisker like organ near the mouth of a fish. The cat fish was erronously called a barbel due to the extended whiskers or barbels that it poses. Yellow fish and carp also poses much smaller barbels. voondoo refers to a giant cat fish. Many places in Africa claim to have these fish in there waters. When we were lighties and our toppies took us fishing to the Vaal river or dam, stories were always told about these huge barbers. I have seen a cat fish that was probably the size of a VW Microbus. Naturally, the bigger the fish, the deeper the water and the wall is usually the deepest place in a river or dam. I will post a pic of large catfish caught in Thailand.

ReplyDeleteSalaams, The fish was caught in a dam that does not allow fish to be removed, dead or alive. This helps to preserve the species for the younger generation as well as allow the fish to grow to impressive sizes. Thanks

Ahmedy howzit, good article and looking forward to the weekly updates, thats a nice size bass, for those of us not into bass fishing can you update fly fishing and normal red/white policeman fishing, its winter now so not much will be happening but updates on where they catching and what bait they using will be good, keep it up and hopefully you around for a long time
ReplyDeleteSalaams, The biggest bass caught in our click was a 4.45kg. There has been other catches like barbel (cat fish) weighing in over 15kg carp and yellow weighing in over 6kg. Unfortunately, we usually only hold a photo shoot of the bass. The guys also have some nice pics of huge King Fish (Giant Trevallis). We will publish these in due course.
