News - M3 Evolution
The original M3 e30 was highly regarded by motoring experts the world over, known for its razor sharp handling, well balanced chassis & punchy twin cam 4 cylinder 147kw motor. Simply put it was for the purist, the motoring enthusiast. BMW released a few editions of the M3 in the E30 range most notably the Sport Evolution model which produced 175Kw (0-100Km/h in 6.5s) . Limited numbers of a cabriolet were produced, & at the time it was the worlds fastest 4 seater convertible Some BMW experts regarded the original M3 as the greatest BMW ever built. Schnitzer motorsport won the 1987 World touring car championship with it & it went on to win the most touring car races in history. RESPEK to that!!
Original M3 versions produced:
Evo1 : 2.3 litre -16v – 143-147 kW/195Nm 0-100 km/h - 6.9 s. Top Speed 230 km/h
Evo2: 2.3 litre 16v – 162kw
Sport Evolution: 2.5litre 175 kW/238 Nm PS 0-100 km/h - 6.5 s. Top Speed 248 km/h

Hate to break it down to you okes, but the 325IS was just a substitute by BMW SA cos they couldn’t get the M3. Nevertheless a legend on the street unique to SA, not to mention the collectors piece 333i which both deserve a separate write up. Since then the E36 M3 has evolved, getting bigger, weightier, more bulky & more electronified. A fellow Nissan enthusiast in Cape Town one day minding his own business in his 300zx pulled up between 2 of these dolphins & all of sudden it was a 3 way, standing start … truth be told the ZX pulled clean away. Dyno’s normally show these M’s at about 149Kw wheel power (reef). In fairness a little over-rated.
So here we are in 2007 waiting for the E90 M3 (due to launch in September), V Floppin 8, bolting out 310kw.(est.).Don’t wanna upset too many blik fans but in direct competition to the Audi RS4, the Audi will probably edge it in the all round battle with Quattro at its disposal (& I mean all round battle - on the track, in the wet), we cant say for sure if the beemer will be quicker in a straight line, with estimated 0-100Kmh time of 5.0s Scooby’s will be taking swipes, Positive features on the V8 motor is double vanos, 8 individual throttles & its motor weighs less than the outgoing straight 6 - impressive !! Looks like BM are trying to win the kilowatt war against its German counterparts. The AMG offering in this segment is still the C55 AMG. Although the new C class is due next year, merc can still hold its own with this 5.5liter - 5.2s missile, with a hundred more newtons than the M. The M5 has about 6 gear box settings before you get started, will the M3 be this complicated? Will it still be a car for the purist? It will probably cost close to a 700K for which money you could buy the brilliant Porsche Cayman S with a top speed of about 280Kmh has more exclusivity & probably hold more value couple years down the line. Total car weight is 1440 kg which exceeds the benchmark of 100bhp per litre for sport tourers.

Mods - Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulators (AFR)
Free Flow sorted, CAI sorted, so time to put your ride on the dyno & get it properly tuned. An AFR will allow a tuner to make minor but very effective adjustment to your fuel mixture. An AFR can increase the pressure on the fuel rail allowing the injectors to increase the fuel flow rate. So why would you wanna do this? Basically from a tuners perspective if your intake system in properly sorted, you would want to increase the combustion rate allowing the motor to release more power. With the help of a LOADING type dynamometer an expert tuner will be able to optimize your ignition timing & fuel mixture to obtain the best possible fuel consumption at full throttle. With your Free Flow & CAI sorted an AFR is a very nice addition when dyno tuning. With all 3 mods in place 10Kw wheel power would be comfortably achievable (especially on a 2 litre 16v motor). AFR’s cost from R400 bucks upwards.

I watched some oval racing at the gauteng motorshow last week which was cool, nice cars & race events. Tried to get a pic of this violent monster disguised in a Peugeot 306 body on the oval track, I don’t know what the hell was underneath that hood, but it was dangerously boosted, full on race, couldn’t zap it, it was just too quick … my main man RIO da mekkie was stunned .
Sticking with the beemer theme we go into overdrive with this Supercharged CSL!! What da Fcok? Yes to add to the CSL diet this dude from Sweden or freakin somewhere, went crazy & put carbon fibre bonnet, fenders & boot lid and supercharged it, huh? Put a set of wings on the side & it will take blast into orbit broo.
It features:
Vortec supercharger kit with V2-SQ Vortec supercharger,
Vortec blow-off valve & oversized chargecooler.
Other bits include a set of H&R coil-overs, ceramic brakes, roll cage & Yokohama AVS sport 19” rubber with Kinesis motor sport rims.
Performance wise - 350Kw / 500nm = quarter mile in 11.3 s - that’s dangerous.

The E46 M3 CSL, a heavy weight light on its feet, a legend reborn. A brilliant car for the purist, with carbon fiber roof & skirting, semi slicks, front air intake duct, and all trimmings like electric windows as optional extras this was a track born bullet barking out 268Kw. I watched the CSL in action in a video by Best Motoring on the track; it killed a Gallardo, 911 Carrera S & an M5 V10. The weight saving program on the CSL made all the difference, the boot floor was made of cardboard > see ree aaass. Total weight reduction was about 200Kg ...reminisince of the original M3 - real race pedigree. Salute!!

Mr B nice update, i agree the new M3 is going to technical and electronic and price is escalating with this but thats the new market and the demand is their and im sure they will sell them all and make money which is ultimately their main aim and on the technology front things are going ahead so its inevitable engines adopt alot of it, hopefully they launch a manual gearbox coz SMG might be quicker but clutch is where the fun is at, looks nice but that E30 will be awesome
ReplyDeleteWhen Hamster from Top Gear drove the original e30 M3 he did'nt want to stop driving it. He described it as "simply unbelievable". It looked absolutely stunning in diamond black, with motorsport kit on the Isle of Man.
ReplyDeleteThe M3 should have stayed a 3 litre motorsport edition performance 6 cyclinder. minimal electronics & tuned with track cred. According to BMW any further enhancements to the 3.2litre straight six would have compromised crankshaft reliability & so it reached the end of its development cycle. But I feel they could have still used the e46 CSL motor with slightly bigger bore say 3.5 litre, to squeeze out at least 290-300Kw.
