FORMULA 1

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN Brazilian Grand Prix

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN. THE LAST KNOCKINGS OF THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL SEASON IN F1 HISTORY AND IT COULD STILL GO ONE OF THREE WAYS.

Even after Stepneygate there are still ructions through the paddock. Max Mosley is in the dock for ridiculing one of motorsport's greatest ambassadors, Jackie Stewart. The FIA observer, brought in at Ron Dennis's behest, to check that everything is fair and equal in the McLaren garage is one of the biggest practical jokes of the season. It's a bit like asking your mum to check that everything's working optimally on your motherboard.

In F1 you need a thief to catch a thief and the only person who's likely to know if there are shenanigans going on is someone who works in a team. Fernando Alonso's Crystal Ball of Team Intentions isn't particularly reliable - when he was at Renault he accused them of not wanting him to win the World Championship with two races to go, when they so SO DID want to win it.

The fact that the FIA have agreed to a special scrutineer is yet another indication of the apartheid of F1. It's a wholly unwelcome precedent in a season of wholly unwelcome precedents.

Having won the race last year Felipe Massa will be keen to do it again, but there are strong factors working against him. Even though he might have the car to win it, Felipe will be playing the sandwich-filler role between himself and the McLarens. Fernando Alonso, of course, is quite happy for Felipe to be sandwich-filler providing he's between himself and Lewis Hamilton. That could easily happen. Lewis will have to hope that the team are a lot faster than the Ferraris or, ironically, a lot slower than the Ferraris, but quicker than the BMWs.

Sunday will be a momentous day whoever wins the drivers' title. It might be Raikkonen's first, and it would be well-deserved. It might be Alonso's third in a row, which would put him alongside Fangio and Schumacher. And it might just be Hamilton's first, which would almost defy the laws of nature. Let's hope half the globe is watching.

"I doubt that the springbok players will read this small note from the depths of a currently very dark London, but if these words should somehow find their way, please let them know this. We are proud of you. You have carried yourselves like gentleman. You have played outstanding rugby and lifted your game when needed. You have always spoken well of the other teams and have never taken any game for granted. You have always been humble, always pushed yourselves and have carried our hopes and dreams.

If karma and trumpet blowing alone have anything to do with Saturday, then England should lose. But we all know that in World Cups, passes, ref decisions and cosmic forces can all go wrong on the night, and England may take the cup. But, if this final does come down to rugby, talent and pure unbridled passion; then my boys, you will once more be men.

Keep calm heads while England lose theirs and keep the mental strength. Don't let anger cloud your judgment, and for God's sake, don't let Johnny kick! Win or lose, you have a nation behind you that is proud.

And, if you can go that last step, find it in yourselves to give that one last push ... for the pride and sanity of your nation: please oh please bury their sorry English asses."

  2. A Ferrari driver is definitely going to win the championship. Question is, which of the four drivers will it be?

  4. LEWIS HAMILTON
If he comes first or second, he's guaranteed to win the title, and the other ways in which he can win are myriad:

    • Win or come 2nd
    • Finish 3rd, 4th or 5th with Alonso 2nd or less
    • Finish 6th with Alonso 2nd or less and Raikkonen 2nd or less
    • Finish 7th with Alonso 4th or less and Raikkonen 2nd or less
    • Finish 8th with Alonso 5th or less and Raikkonen 3rd or less
    • Fail to score, Alonso finishing 6th or less and Raikkonen 3rd or less

    FERNANDO ALONSO
For the glory he needs to:

    • Win with Hamilton 4th or less
    • Finish 2nd with Hamilton 5th or less
    • Finish 3rd with Hamilton 7th or less and Raikkonen 2nd or less
    • Finish 4th with Hamilton 8th or lower and Raikkonen 3rd or less
    • Finish 5th with Hamilton failing to score and Raikkonen 3rd or less

    KIMI RAIKKONEN
A shot he may have, but it's a slim one, coming down to needing a:

    • Win with Hamilton 6th or lower and Alonso 3rd or lower
    • 2nd place finish with Hamilton 8th or lower and Alonso 4th or lower

That's unless Alonso just takes Hamilton out on the first corner to pave his way to a Ferrari drive next year. But that would be pure speculation...
