JET FUEL ONLY

News – Ducati 1098 S
Ducati are to bikes as Ferrari are to cars, the premier 2 wheeled machine in terms of styling, quality & power. The recently launched “1098 S“ is claimed to be the most powerful twin cylinder motorcycle with the highest torque to weight ratio of any sport bike. Weighing in at a meagre 170Kg & producing 123Nm @ 8000rpm it’s not hard to believe. It’s also the first super bike to feature Brembo mono block brakes providing superior stopping power & rigidity. The performance of the “S”: requires a napkin to be worn if tested by amateurs, with the 100km.h dash coming in at 2.7s and quarter mile at 9.8s you’ll need a sixth sense to anticipate approaching objects as you hit its 290Km/h top speed. Probably the ultimate super bike apart from the Hayabusa which is a bigger bike at 1300cc. The Ducati’s track tune with adjustable suspension & lighter wheels is for the hard core track pro. Pricing locally would equate to about 250K - for a bike, what da hell!!

Motor: 1100cc Power 119Kw and 123Nm @ 8000rpm Performance: 0-100Km/h 2.7s Top Speed 290Km/h

Mhort invitation on wheels? Maybe not for Casey Stoner who has just won the Moto GP Championship on a Ducati. In fact its been over 30 years since a non Jap bike has won the Moto GP Championship.

Merc F700
This has to be the only car I know of that looks absolutely stunning from certain angles & pretty terrible from others. Like straight up front it looks like Kermit the fcukin frog!! But er’ check out the side view from the back at about a 10 degree angle it is superlative. The Merc F700 is a look into the future of motoring. It debuted at the Frankfurt motor show & features some impressive innovations. Laser sensors on the headlights will scan the road surface ahead and adjust the suspension accordingly. It has sparkless ignition under partial load for lower emmisions. If you still not impressed it can access internet databases through voice commands to adjust your diary. A stunning spacious interior with DVD screens qualifies this almost as a 1st class lounge.

Mods - Camshafts - Stage 2 has landed
Ok lekker we haven’t done a mod in a while so let’s get to it, the simplest way to increase power on the “head” is simply to re-profile your cams. This doesn’t require stripping the head & only involves removing the tappet cover & disconnecting the camshafts.

Camshafts allow air into the cylinders of a motor by controlling the opening and closing of the valves. A typical 16 valve system has 8 intake valves that controls air intake before combustion & 8 exhaust valves that release waste gases after combustion. The concept behind modifying a camshaft is to allow the engine to suck in more air. Camshafts are basically rods consisting of lobes that rotate & push against the valves allowing it to open and close for set time durations during combustion (measured in degrees). For example a standard cam profile might be 235 degree duration. When modifying a camshaft an engineer will basically be modifying the duration, increasing it, thereby allowing more air to be sucked in, and released from the cylinders. The duration of the lobes might be increased to let say 264 degrees, thereby allowing the valves to stay open for a longer period of time so that increased airflow into the cylinders will allow for a higher rate of combustion & therefore increase power. Basically, without getting too technical that’s it. There are other factors that come into play like “Lift”, cams for a turbo setup benefit with higher valve lift. You could spend a bit more cash by buying off the shelf performance cams that are engineered for longer duration & specific lift based on the type of setup i.e. NA or FI. The benefit being they are more stable during idle & are guaranteed products. But may require upgrading the valve train

Below: The oval bits are the lobes on the camshaft. A set of Greddy 264 SR20 cams & cam gears. Adjustable cam gears allow for more precise timing when setting up the cams.

  2. Mr B

can you please do a small write up about the drags at select?

  3. JWT S3's or S4's ?
The S3's are 260 degree cams perfect for all round power across rev range.
If you running SR20 turbo S4 supposedly gives you better top end power.
    We'll see, wink wink ...

You mean do a write up about the Fitnah at the select in lenz ?

the maserati looks better in rce trim. i remember seeing it on top gear & it was quick then but looked bad.
I think the maserati still holds the best lap record on Top G.
