HOST CITY: NELSPRUIT


Nelspruit is the capital of the Mpumalanga Province. Mpumalanga means “Place where the sun rises”. Nelspruit and the Mpumalanga is best known for its breathtaking greenery and views.



Keeping with the theme of the area, attractions nearby Nelspruit include the Kruger National Park, a great experience of wildlife in its natural form. Nelspruit has 2 airports being the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport and the Nelspruit Airport. It is also a corridor to Mozambique. The Blue Train runs between Pretoria and Nelspruit on a journey known as the “Lowveld Experience”. Other Nelspruit attractions include the Lowveld Botanical Gardens and the Sudwala Caves. Other attractions in the Mpumalanga Area include the Panorama Route which includes the Blyde River Canyon (Picture Below), God’s Window, Mac Mac Forest & Pools in Sabie, and Pilgrims Rest.



2010 PROJECTS
NEW MBOMBELA STADIUM

The New Mbombela Stadium is to be have a 45 000 Capacity. It is located 6 kilometres west of Nelspruit at Mataffin. This project is expected to be just over R 900 million. The stadium is expected to be ready by July 2009 well ahead of Schedule.





NELSPRUIT FAN PARK
The Nelspruit Fan Park is to be situated at the Agricultural Showgrounds. The Fan Park is expected to accommodate about 20 000 spectators. Other Community Viewing Sites are in plan.

NELSPRUIT TRANSPORT PROJECT
Among the Transport Plans for 2010 in Nelspruit are the following: High Occupancy Vehicle Lanes being added to the very busy R40 route, A New Public Transport (PT) Interchange in the Nelspruit CBD currently being built as well as others being planned at White River, Hazyview & Riverside, Building of a new P166 route to and from the stadium. There are also plans to build a new Northern Ring Road to divert traffic using the current N4 Highway away from the Nelspruit CBD.

TRAINING VENUES
Local stadiums targeted as training venues for the 2010 World cup include Ackerville Stadium, Kanyamazane Stadium, Kwa-Guga Stadium, Kwanazema Stadium, Matsulu Stadium & Valencia Stadium.

ACCOMMODATION
As the Mpumalanga Province is already a tourist attraction for many South Africans and Foreign Visitors due to the Kruger National Park, there are many accommodation facilities in place at Nelspruit, Hazeyview, White River and the Kruger National Park itself. WORLD CUP TICKETS
The first phase of World Cup Tickets Applications begins on Friday 20 February 2009 and ends on 31 March 2009. More info with regards to this will be given in next week’s article. Please note that it is not first come first serve.
