Ok , Thursdays we usually open the floor and DISCUSS some serious issues at hand. So please guys lets get the views on this subject by the blogs finest and loyal members. This is serious and no playing here. In light of the resurgent power cuts of which I suffered three afternoons without power, Are we ready to host the 2010 WORLD CUP.
I mean we have the greatest showpiece in World Soccer and the biggest tourism draw card ever to hit our shores. I was driving home yesterday and heard on radio that DONT WORRY SA, THE STADIUMS WILL HAVE POWER!
Loadshedding for the next 7 years. Do we have cause for concern. i ask this question seriously. And this is why I voice my concern.
If the Stadiums have power and the games go on, and Loadshedding takes place, Wont it dampen the spirit of the World Cup. The whole country needs to be set alight.
What if there is a gridlock in a suburb near A venue, Traffic Lights would be out, Traffic would be crazy, restaurants and PUBS will lose out on the greatest chance they would ever have of making that money they planned for 2010.
It would be a logistical nightmare. Imagine coming home and theres no POWER, You cant even watch the game at home. If you decide to drive to a game and there is no POWER, Youl probably get there after the game......
The TOURISM Sector will die. Imagine the English Fans celebrating after the game at the Dros and the POWER GOES OUT. Imagine Fans returning back to the hotels and theres no POWER.
What about the Fan Fests and watching the games on the Big Screen in PUBLIC AREAS across South Africa. If there is no POWER I can only imagine the crisis and mayhem. And where there is MAYHEM THERE IS CRIME
The consequences are relentless. Am i Panicking. I want to ask the readers
Do we have cause for concern?
Will our Tourism industry Suffer?
Is there a standby nation to host the CUP?
Come 2009/10 We need a country with a flawless infrastructure let alone POWER?
If 2010 and loadshedding is anything like this last three days we are f#$ked?
you are absolutely right. the stadiums will have their own power and not eskoms as this is a requirement of FIFA. I am sure that the big screens set up by the LOC will have power, but all teh items as mentioned are true. The country is going to be the laughing stock of the world if the power problem is not solved. I just hope that by some miracle we pull it off well
ReplyDeleteI agree Punisher, But How could a situation of this magnitude get to be so bad. I mean surely someone could have overuled and forecasted this problem.
ReplyDeleteI hear it was made evident in 2000 by Eskom that they need funds.
Fordsburg itself was hectic, I can only picture Sandton, Fourways etc.
There has to be a solution.2020 will make or break this country I say
WE ARE FUCKED
ReplyDeletei dont think there is cause for concern.government understands what is required, & i'm confident that they will produce.
ReplyDeletebackups are in place at all major events.
cmon guys, no matter how much we hate whats happening, THIS IS OUR COUNTRY & we need to stand by it.
were we not all proud SOUTH AFRICANS when we hosted the african nations cup ?, were we not proud when we hosted the rugby world cup, lets be proud that we hosting the first african soccer world cup!!!!
"go" BE PATRIOTIC
You guys make a fair point, but I think your vision is limited.
ReplyDeleteYes, to you guys the 2010 is a month long event, where tourists come here to spend foreign currency.
I’m sure most of you are looking to make a quick buck during that month. ( ill rent out my house in pounds)
But looking at the big picture, you realize that 2010 is something much greater and happens over these next few years.
Fair enough, Eskom will be able to switch on the whole countries lights during the world cup month. The whole big issue is : Eskom being able to supply enough energy to EVERY industry that will be involved in getting us ready for 2010.
It’s looking bleak from where I’m sitting. Most of us are only affected my traffic jams, and lack of internet connectivity at work, but many industries are already feeling the effects. Cows are not happy with the lack of warmth, and are producing less milk. Chickens are not happy with the lack of light and are laying fewer eggs. Sasol production has also dipped due to the lack of power.
But it’s not all bad. Studies have shown that the lack electricity have caused couples to engage in more sexual activity. No TV = More Sex.
Always look for the silver lining :)

Fantastic I agree with "Go Partriotic", as South Africans we have a moral obligation to our country to ensure the succuss of this world cup. Be it that we volunteer as car guards etc we need to assist instead of being armchair critics. Remember this is not OUR world cup we are merely borrowing it from future generations of South Africans hence we need to impress upon the world that South Africa and the African continent can be sustainable and not a basket case.
ReplyDelete"GO" I DISAGREE with you! There is cause for concern!!!
ReplyDelete2010 WC will be in June, that’s winter time… so the use of more power! I agree with a few comments and Yes we are PATRIOTIC but common, the current situation is becoming or is already catastrophic. Increase in power tarrifs up to 18.7 percent will affect the entire country! These Power outages are having major impact on Hospitals and Emergency services! Im sure you guys heard that the cable car got stuck on its way up table mountain and people were left stranded until 1am! Hopefully Eskom sorts something out, otherwise we in for KAK!
just a joke
What's the difference between the Titanic and South Africa? The Titanic sank with the lights on
the 1st african world cup should have come to cot de voir!!!!!! we would have done a better job!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteDROGBA
I agree with go. We need to be patriotic. Everything will be okay. The problem with u guys is u look at everything in the worst possible way. Its up to us
ReplyDeletewhat does being patriotic have to do with power failures?
ReplyDeletego is only being patriotic because he has a generator at his mtn shop. if it was affecting his business lets see how patriotic he will be.
ReplyDeleteGo does not need a generator! His business is such that he can use candle light and process his work at a later stage! His business doesn’t depend on Electricity!
ReplyDeleteAsk those businesses who depend on electricity whats it like? Ask them how much they have lost in recent weeks?
I disagree.I have a veld /bush behind my house and we probably had in total telephone lines for approximately 4 months in the last year.Pathetic I might add.Heck the one time the Telkom dudes came to replace the cable, damn thugs tried to steal the Telkom step ladder. This might seem humourous but after a while you eventually begin to loose faith.Telkom now say that they will not replace the cable bacause our street is a hotspot and it is not feesible for them.I know we need to be alert, but there is only so much one can do.I ask first Telkom, then Eskom, what next Vodacom?......Mr Rasool be on the lookout you are probably next.Anyway if anyone could help solve my problem I would much apprciate it.
ReplyDeletemini today is Jummah, GO n make dua for our country
ReplyDeleteI had a dinner in Rivonia at 7.left Fordsburg at 5.30
ReplyDeletetraffic lites were out, Sandton apparantly had no power.
Its a Nitemare.I agree about being PATRIOTIC.
But compare Germany in 2003 to South Africa 2008. This is serious.
PEOPLE are suffering, Fordsburg was hit from 12-7 pm on Wednesday. What about the food places.
I think its fair to be despondant.

South Africa's gold mines, and mining companies in other sectors, were instructed on Thursday night by electricity utility Eskom to shut their mines, possibly for up to between two to six weeks.
ReplyDeleteA letter signed by Eskom CEO Jacob Maroga said that key industrial consumers (KPI) had to reduce their power loads to "minimum levels". He added that Eskom could not guarantee power supply.
"We did not send down a shift last night and we did not send one this morning at any of our mines," said Willie Jacobsz, spokesman for Gold Fields. "I understand the situation is the same at AngloGold Ashanti and Harmony Gold," he said.
