Liverpool are Europe's number one - it's official
May 28 2008 by Tony Barrett
LIVERPOOL will go into the forthcoming season as Europe's number one ranked team.
The Reds top UEFA's official rankings thanks to their Champions League performances over the past five seasons.
Having won the competition in 2005, been runners up to AC Milan in 2007 and made it through to the semi-finals this year, Rafa Benitez's team has accrued more ranking points than any other club in Europe.
Liverpool top the rankings table with 104.284 points, giving them a one point lead over Italian giants AC Milan.
Next on the list are Chelsea and Barcelona, with Arsenal in sixth and current Champions League holders Man United in seventh.
Other British teams on the list include Newcastle in 19th, Rangers in 20th, Middlesbrough in 27th, Spurs in 31st, Bolton in 41st, Everton in 44th and Celtic in 52nd.
Liverpool have moved up from third to first thanks to last season's run to the semi-finals, meaning they top UEFA's rankings for the first time since 1985.
Their recent form in the Champions League also means that they will go into the qualifiers for next season's competition as number one seeds and will thereby avoid the other seeded teams when the draw for the qualifying rounds is made in July.
Meanwhile, Krisztian Nemeth's rapid progress since joining Liverpool last summer has been recognised by Hungary who have called the teenage striker into their senior squad for Saturday's international with Croatia.
The 19-year-old has quickly established himself as one of the stars of Gary Ablett's title-winning reserve side after moving to the club from MTK Hungaria in July 2007.
A string of dazzling performances and several eye-catching goals in a debut season in which he finished up as top scorer have marked Nemeth out as a player for the future and Benitez believes he has the ability to challenge for a place in Liverpool's first team.
The Reds boss said: "He is a player with game intelligence, with ability and someone who can score goals. He is a player we are keeping an eye on for the future.
"He must keep working. I think he will be much better in time because he wants to learn."
At the weekend, Nemeth fired Hungary's under-19 side to the European Championships with the only goal of the game against Portugal.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid have resorted to more dirty tricks in their bid to sign Cristiano Ronaldo by claiming they are negotiating with the Glazer family.
The Spanish giants say they have ignored Ferguson and chief executive Gill and contacted the club's American owners directly.
But that has been denied out of hand by a spokesman for the family, who said: "As Sir Alex and David Gill have already said, Ronaldo is not for sale."
In a further bizarre twist, Spanish sports newspaper Marca claim Real have a club car (right)ready and waiting for wing wizard Ronaldo.
The top-of-the-range Audi has been pictured in a club car park with a hand-written notice on the dashboard saying: ‘Deliver to Cristiano Ronaldo'.

ReplyDeleteUseless bunch of W**KERS!
Fat Frank!
So really what you saying is that "Team Ranked #7" quite frankly whipped the crap out of "Team Ranked #1" in all forms of the game this season?
ReplyDeleteHmmm.. doesnt say much about the rankings, or the quality of "Team Ranked #1" now, does it?
But the official title of Champions of Europe belong to Man United and we have the trophy to prove it.
ReplyDeleteNot a bad season for us then, we totally outclassed and out performed against the 6 best teams in Europe. Lets see we beat the 1st, 3rd and 6th ranked teams to the Prem title and beat 1st to 6th ranked teams to the European title.
Not bad at all for a team ranked
7th.
It's a shame man, you guys have to celebrate achievements like these, while we celebrate watching our team dazzle and pick up trophies along the way.
The best in Europe this season has to undoubtly be the Champions of Europe.
And from your very own CEO Rick Parry the priority next season for you fools is the Premeirship.

ReplyDeleteYeah i forgot about the Arch Angel, but with all the quality strikers they have it's not a huge surprise!
ReplyDeleteBenzema, Henry and Bilal should be able to do a job. They didn't even shortlist Trez. The Nutty Professor clearly has a plan which no one has a clue about.
I'm glad Marco dropped that clown Bouhlarouz from the Dutch squad. That man is in the class of Boumsong!
kopout, as per the article , YOU ARE THE WEAKEST LINK....GOODBYE!!
ReplyDeleteHalf of European football fans would seemingly prefer to watch important matches than have sex according to a straw poll sponsored by one of the backers of the upcoming Euro 2008 championships.
However, the results from individual countries vary.
The largest majority preferring to watch football to making love being 72 percent of Spanish supporters - surprising given the lack of success their national side has had - to 25 percent of Italy fans duly holding up their reputation as Latin lovers.
The poll also saw 60 percent of the
2 000 supporters polled declare that football was like a religion to them. - Sapa-AFP

ReplyDelete3 zims! must we burn them?
ReplyDeleteSo what the fuck if u are number 1, fucken can't even win a premier league title. livertwats are last in the premier league and 1st in europe-sweep your own door step 1st.
ReplyDeleteI thought this fucken blog was going to be painted red when United win. These ABU's dnt stick to their word-that's why the dnt win anything.
ReplyDeleteHow abt that-Livertwats ranked number 1, and they 1 point clear of AC Milan-what a joke. Who wants to be number 1 but have no trophies for 2 seasons and maybe more seasons to come. Try being the richest club in the world as according to Forbes latest rankings United is NUMBER 1 with 13.6 billion rands and Madrid 2nd with 6 billion-now that is a gap worth noting-not a fucken 1 point diff then u want to put fucken 3 years ago trophies on the blog to brag. By the way on that Forbes list Livertwats was 8th with I think it was just under 900 million rands. Fuck Liverpool and fuck this blog coz it will only be painted red when we spill the livertwats blood on it.
Manchester United is the best whether anyone likes it or not coz I dnt see any other club doing so many doubles. Plastic cups are excluded coz Liverpool and Chelsea like to compete for the Charity Shield and that milk cup-they field their strongest sides for these events.
