SUPER TUESDAYS

PENALTINO WINS WORLD FOOTBALLER OF THE YEAR AWARD

Cristiano Ronaldo beat off competition from Lionel Messi, Xavi, as well as Fernando Torres, and last year’s winner Kaka, to win the FIFA World Player of the Year Award. In second place was Barcelona star Lionel Messi, and Spain/Liverpool striker Fernando Torres finished third. The attacking wideman had a magnificent 2007/08 season, scoring 42 goals for Manchester United, and capturing the Premier League, Champions League and European Golden Boot. He followed this up this term by lifting the Club World Cup in Japan.Ronaldo caps off a clean sweep of the major awards, having also picked up the prestigious Ballon d'Or (European Footballer of the Year) at the end of 2008.The 23-year-old becomes the first English-based player to be named FIFA World Player of the Year, and only the second Portuguese, following in the footsteps of Luis Figo, who triumphed in 2001.In the women's category, Brazilian sensation Marta was victorious, winning for the third year in succession. The FIFA Fair Play Awards went jointly to the Armenia and Turkey Football Federations for the work they did in helping bring the two countries together politically, socially and football-wise.The FIFA Presidential Award was presented to the United States Women's National Team.

FROM THE KOP END
Did Rafa Get It Wrong?
Was his pre-meditated attack on Fergie signs that he DID succumb to the mind games? Was the manner in which he attacked Fergie wrong? I think the answer to both those questions is Yes! I for one loved the way he finally exposed Fergie for the "mob" boss that he thinks he is but Rafa should not have had such a public outburst. He should have just kept his cool and waited for Fergie to crack first. What was worst for Rafa is that the team did not back his statements by drawing against Stoke. They put in a terrible performance. It looked like the players themselves were affected by the mind games. Rafa's starting 11 was questionable and so were his subs and the timing of them. Players like Lucas and Benayoun were left on for too long. Why was Torres left on the bench for so long and why Keene was not even used? These are the problems that Rafa has to address soon if we are to win that elusive 19th title or dear I say it the Mancs might end up equalling our record. United fans are already celebrating like they won the title but remember we already got the points on the board, those 2 games that you got in hand won't count for anything unless you get maximum points and even if you do you still have to play us! So relax boys it looks like this ones going down to the wire.

FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT DIDNT SEE. RAFAS VERBAL ATTACK ON SIR ALEX FERGUSON

THE ASLAM KHOTA COLUMN

Smith’s triumph of the spirit.
When Graeme Smith stepped out of the dressing room to bat at number 11 with a broken bone in his left hand and a virtually lame and painful right elbow, there were still 38 balls left to face. The courageous captain strode to the middle, to a tumultuous applause from the spectators, in the hope to save the 3rd Test in Sydney, yet it was not the final piece of drama in a gripping series between the two old adversaries.
Makhaya Ntini and Dale Steyn stood tall in 74 defiant minutes for the 9th wicket. Then Dale Steyn departed to add to the tension. In that stand with Steyn, Ntini survived a caught-and-bowled chance, was then dropped by Mathew Hayden with Smith looking on from the other end. It looked as though the home team had blown its last chance.
Storm clouds gathered and swirled to add to the mind-sapping tension. The crowd grew restive and agitated, yet in awe and admiration as Smith gallantly aimed to deny their team victory. He held on, wincing every time the ball hit the bat. He faced 17 deliveries in 29 agonizing minutes. It was the bravest demonstration of courage seen in recent times. But alas, he did not have the final say. Smith was helpless as he was bowled off a crack on a ragged 5th afternoon pitch by Mitchell Johnson. It was 5.34 pm and just ten balls remained. “Seldom has a loss so closely resembled a triumph”, wrote Peter Roebuck. Australia’s victory salvaged pride, South Africa had discovered another legend.

Makhaya Ntini discovered that he too could emulate his lower-order colleagues. Their heroics in the second Test in Melbourne clinched the series. Ntini kept the attack at bay for 103 minutes and 75 deliveries to frustrate the attack and to force the game and the series to the last ten overs.
Smiths heroics will be remembered along with that of New Zealander Bert Sutcliffe (head injury), who returned to the crease against South Africa. Colin Cowdrey ten years later in 1963 with his arm shattered and in plaster, partnered David Allen for an over to deny West Indies a win and in the 1977 Centenary Test in Melbourne, Rick McKosker batted with a broken jaw. In 1984, the late West Indian pace man Malcolm Marshall batted with a broken bone in his hand, then later, led the attack with his hand and forearm heavily plastered.
Captain Smith set the tone for the series with a stout and determined century in the first Test in Perth. A B De Villiers and debutant J P Duminys unbroken 111run partnership for the 5th wicket snatched an amazing win in the games 2nd largest run chase. Then his scores of 62 and 75 in the 2nd Test was only bettered by Dale Steyns all-round performances and the the classy Duminy, who in only his third innings in Tests scored a brilliant 166. Duminy and the tail-enders rescued South Africa from 185 for 7 to 459 all out and the 65 run lead proved crucial. Duminy and Steyns 180 for the 9th wicket was the highest for South Africa against Australia and was 15 runs short of a world record. Steyns 75, his Test best came after his five wickets in the first innings and followed it with another five to complete a career defining performance and ensuring a series win for the first time in Australia.

Then came the final Test where until the injury to the finger, Smith had led his team admirably. For a man who on his previous tour three years back was heckled at every instance and deemed cocky and arrogant, guided his men against all odds to win two exceptional Tests to bring pride to his team and to his country. He had won over even the most hardened Aussie. Then in the final Test, in the final hour, fate appeared to have made up its mind. But in cricket, the end is only ever a ball away. It was a day the losing captain won.

  5. I think that blog with reds for life is one HORSE SHIT blog. What does this guy think? liverflops are going to win when generally they have been lucky this season to warrant a place on top. Now the real men will be on top after playing all their games-the MANCS. Coz they know how to play. So what if liverflops have to com to OT, they will catch it just like chelsea did. Swoosh if you think this guy knows it all then think again. He has mentioned in his stupid article things everyone knows already. Try to be more creative next time.

  11. Smith no doubt deserves all the credit and we should be proud of his commitment and dedication. His proved time and time again that his a fighter! Infact he didn’t take any pain killers going out onto the field as that would have compromised his vision and concentration. His pain threshold is unbelievable. But lets sit back and look at this scenario. The historic series win was already in the bag and Smith was presented with a marvellous opportunity to move up from Captain Marvel to Superman! But What if a ball had hit a crack and seriously cracked open his hand? What if he was out for a year instead of a few weeks? That would have seriously compromised the next series. What would the headlines be saying now? Would they focus on bravery or stupidity? The series was already in the bag. History had already been made and even if he survived, it would not have resulted in a unique whitewash. Saving what had become a meaningless Test was simply not worth the risk.

  12. Its about character

Yes the risk factor was there. But its about heart.

    Thumbs up to Smith

  18. To anonymous. just like how you think your team will win the league this season I think the same of mine.

Unlike you I do show a bit more passion for my team and I will keep supporting them....win or lose!

  20. Red for life and co liverflops must be really desperate to see them win a league title in this life. Don't worry, you will after 20 years when your kids are supporting the MANCS coz they will be fed up with mediocre performances from liverflops. Rather talk about the many trophies MANCS won in the last two decades, that's more interesting and FACTUAL.

  21. tonights game vs wigan is a tricky one.

united go into this game with great confidence after thrashing chelsea.

wigan will be a hard one, & steve bruce men will be going all out to dent uniteds title hopes.

i would prefer the 6 points in the bag at this stage than the 2 games in hand.

games in hand count for nothing.

"go" LETS GET BACK ON TOP

  22. go we had the harder 1st 1/2 of the season. after every champs league game or international game in midweek, liverpool folowed it with a home league game, where as the others had it tougher with away games. we played the big guys away as well! we had ronaldo out for the 1st 6 weeks, carick out for a while others as well.

if they stay fit, the experience will tell, like giggsy did on sunday! have no fear go!

  23. Anonymous..... I think my 5 year old knows more football than you!
He supports Liverpool and would probably never support man utd.

BTW I have already seen my team win a league title.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Why is anonymous talking to himself abt winning the league? Funny creatures these liverflops, looks like they like losing more than winning. They even like their children losing.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I like my child choosing and thinking for himself unlike you who probably supports the mancs just because your buddies do!

Who are you going to support when LFC win the league!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yeah you rite, last time we supported liverflops Mancs won the league so we tired of being failures all the time. Rather support a winning team. It's like betting on a losing horse. Will you put money on a losing horse. So I have been supporting the Manc's since 1980, don't even start abt supporting a team only when they win. I'm a Manc for life, not a loser for life.
