PSL UPDATE
DC Update
Premier Soccer League Prosecutor, Zola Majavu, has confirmed that Kaizer Chiefs will appear before the PSL Disciplinary Committee (DC) on charges of spectator misbehaviour.
The charges relate to incidents that took place in the MTN8 1st Leg Semi Final between Ajax Cape Town and Kaizer Chiefs at Newlands Stadium on 15 August 2009 where:
In the 69th ,74th , 83rd minute and at the conclusion of the match (4 separate incidents), Kaizer Chiefs spectators behaved in an unsporting and disorderly manner in that they threw an assortment of missiles, including but not limited to “plastic bottles”, at inter alia, the match officials and Ajax players in the field of play and the tunnel area
Kaizer Chiefs spectators caused damage to stadium property by removing some chairs from their casing( hinges) and throwing them into the field of play
Kaizer Chiefs spectators caused an interruption of the normal proceedings of the match in that the match was delayed for approximately 3 minutes while the missiles were being thrown after the 93rd minute.

The Kaizer Chiefs DC will take place on Wednesday, 19 August 2009, at 17h30.
In light of the above, I would like the readers to comment on the fans of South Africa, Which fans should we avoid during the World Cup and more importantly will South Africa be geared up in 2010?

Decision time looms for players
CLT20 Governing Council clarifies qualification criteria

Mumbai, 18 August, 2009: With the imminent naming of the initial 20-player squads for the Airtel Champions League Twenty20 (CLT20), the CLT20 Governing Council has today clarified the rules relating to players who have qualified for multiple teams.

A number of players who are scheduled to compete in the Airtel CLT20 have qualified to compete for multiple teams and will face a tough decision as the final squad deadline looms.

Under CLT20 rules, provided a player qualifies for more than one team, all those qualifying teams can nominate that player.

If the player then decides to play for an ‘away’ team rather than his ‘home’ team (the team from the country he is eligible to represent in international cricket), the ‘away’ team must pay US$200,000 compensation to the ‘home’ team.

‘Away’ teams are not eligible for compensation if a player chooses to play for his ‘home’ team.

A number of players are eligible to play for multiple teams, including:
· Nathan Bracken (NSW Blues*, RC Bangalore)
· Brendon McCullum (Otago Bolts*, NSW Blues)
· Dirk Nannes (Victorian Bushrangers*, Delhi Daredevils)
· David Warner (NSW Blues*, Delhi Daredevils)
· Cameron White (Victorian Bushrangers*, RC Bangalore)
· Andrew McDonald (Victorian Bushrangers*, Delhi Daredevils)
· Herchelle Gibbs (Cape Cobras*, Deccan Chargers)
· Farveez Maharoof (Wayamba*, Delhi Daredevils)
· Dwayne Smith (Deccan Chargers, Sussex Sharks)
* Designates ‘home’ team. Neither Deccan nor Sussex is Dwayne Smith’s ‘home’ team

Members of each team’s initial squad must have either played for, or must have been contracted to play for, his nominating team in the most recent qualifying Twenty20 competition played by that team.

For this year’s event, no person who has played in any unofficial cricket event can be named in a 2009 CLT20 squad either as a player or coach.

However teams are not disqualified from the 2009 CLT20 if they played rebel players in their qualifying tournament, provided they terminated their rebel contracts before 31 May 2009.

Dean Kino, Champions League Twenty20 Governing Council Member and Director of Legal and Business Affairs, said:

“These qualification rules ensure that players will have a choice, subject to existing contracts, of who they represent in the Airtel CLT20. The US$200,000 compensation paid to ‘home’ teams will create significant interest in the lead-up to the squad announcements.

“Once a team names its initial squad, CLT20 will assess which players have been listed for two or more teams. Players who have been nominated by multiple teams will then be contacted by CLT20 to nominate their chosen team.

“Players will then be given 24 hours to determine which team they wish to represent.”

Lalit Modi, Chairman, Champions League Twenty20, said:

“The ability of players to qualify for multiple teams adds another revolutionary element to the Airtel Champions League Twenty20. A number of players will face a tough decision over the coming days as to which team they will represent in the inaugural tournament in October.

“In addition to the US $ 6 million in prize money, each team is guaranteed a US $ 500,000 participation fee. This means that even teams that finish from the 9th to 12th place at the Airtel CLT20 will earn US $ 600,000, while the winners will receive more than US $ 3 million.”

  12. Tom Hicks’ Sports Group Defaults On $525 Million In Loans
    April 3, 2009
Private equity legend Tom Hicks’ sports team holding company has defaulted on more than $500 million in loans, a source has told FINalternatives.
Hicks Sports Group, which owns baseball’s Texas Rangers and hockey’s Dallas Stars, failed to make its interest payment on $525 million in syndicated bank loans on Monday. The group is now in talks with its lenders about a forbearance.
Hicks made his billions on leveraged buyouts, founding private equity firm Hicks Muse Tate & Furst, now HM Capital, in 1989. He retired from the firm in 2006.
According to the source, who has seen documents relating to the loans, Hicks defaulted on a $350 million bank term loan, $100 million second-lien loan and a $75 million revolving credit facility. A spokesman for Hicks Sports declined to comment.
Hicks also owns a 50% stake in the English Premier League’s Liverpool Football Club, but through a separate entity. According to the source, the loans are partially secured by the Rangers and Stars, but not by Hicks’ stake in Liverpool or his personal assets.
Last week, Major League Baseball’s Web site reported that Hicks had hired Merrill Lynch to explore the sale of a minority stake—of up to 49%—in the Rangers, which Hicks bought in 1998 from an ownership group that included former President George W. Bush. Bush, a longtime friend of Hicks, is scheduled to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at his former team’s home opener in Arlington, Texas, on Monday.
According to MLB.com, Hicks is also trying to sell a minority stake in the Stars. It is unclear whether the proposed stake sales, which reportedly can be either in whole or in part, are related to the default. Hicks’ Liverpool co-owner, George Gillett, is trying to sell his Montreal Canadiens hockey team and his Liverpool stake. Hicks and Gillett have reportedly had a falling out over the soccer club, with the former blocking the latter’s attempt to sell most of his stake last year.
The Hicks default is the most dramatic manifestation of the current economic crisis on the sports world. In February, the National Basketball Association borrowed $175 million—on top of its existing $1.7 billion credit facility—making it available to 15 teams having trouble making ends meet.
