SWOOSH0018'S BEST WORLD CUP X11

WOZA SA 2010 WOZA

SWOOSH0018’S BEST WORLD CUP XI

Below is the team selected by those who have voted throughout the duration of the competition. The formation selected the most from the last post was the 4-3-3 Total Football option.

The Team Selected by you is as follows (4-3-3) Total Football:
1 Lev Yashin USSR Goalkeeper
2 Carlos Alberto Torres Brazil Right Full Back
3 Paolo Maldini Italy Left Full Back
4 Fabio Cannavaro Italy Centre Back
5 Franz Beckenbauer Germany Centre Back

6 Lothar Matthaus Germany Midfield
7 Johan Cruyff Netherlands Midfield Captain
8 Zinnedine Zidane France Midfield
9 Pele Brazil Forward
10 Garrincha Brazil Forward (Right)
11 Diego Maradona Argentina Forward (Left)

The winner of the competition is Naweed Patel.

In the Total Football system as developed by the Dutch in 70’s there were no set outfield positions. Every player could play in any position. In the team below, Lev Yashin is the last line of defence and is one of the greatest keepers ever putting into practice the weeper keeper role.

The initial set up above shows the defence as Cannavaro & Beckenbauer in the centre as well as Carlos Alberto & Maldini as fullbacks. The Italians Maldini & Cannavaro would be the solid defenders in this formation. Carlos Alberto on the right would assist as an attacking force down the right midfield with his bursts as a Brazilian fullback.

In Midfield Matthaus would ultimately be the anchor with Zidane & Cruyff being the more creative & attacking midfield players. Beckenbauer as a sweeper would also assist Matthaus in breaking up opposition attacks in the midfield.

The Right & Left forwards are set as Garrincha & Maradona who are among the best dribblers and attacking creators the World of Football has seen. Both players have single handedly taken their respective nations to World Cup success with Garrincha in 1962 & Maradona in 1986. The creative and assisting forwards thus suite Maradona & Garrincha best. Pele having scored over 1200 goals throughout his career and arguably the greatest player ever will act as centre forward and primary goal scorer as well as goal creator. Ultimately the likes of Cruyff and Zidane would have 3 target men in Maradona, Pele & Garrincha.

Johan Cruyff being the greatest exponent of Total Football would be the captain of this team.

These players fit the Total football system style well with the changing of positions suiting each players style. Can the above team be defeated if all the above players at their best took the field and were at their best.

The players who missed out by selecting the above formation are Johan Neeskens and Ronaldo.

QUALIFIERS

Also this weekend and next Wednesday the final round of qualifiers for the 2010 take place. In Africa Cameroon need a victory away at Morocco to ensure they qualify ahead of Gabon. Nigeria need Tunisia to slip up as well as ensure they beat Kenya to qualify while Egypt need to beat Algeria at least 2-0 to ensure they qualify. In Europe the home and away legs of the playoffs take place between Portugal vs Bosnia, France vs Ireland, Greece vs Ukraine and Russia vs Slovenia. Uruguay also face off against Costa Rica in a home and away playoff while New Zealand host Bahrain after playing to a goalless draw in the 1st leg.

GAUTRAIN UPDATE
In a previous article relating to the Gautrain, it was planned to have the first phase being the East to West Route of the Gautrain ready for the 2010 World Cup. The East to West Route was from OR Tambo to Sandton via Kempton Park and Marlboro. However in an article I read in the star due to extra costs amounting to 1.3 Billion Rand the Gautrain Phase 1 Project will not be ready by June 2010 as planned but rather in October 2010.

  2. Welcome France and Portugal to South Africa.
    We need you.
It will be a tragedy if these two teams dont come.
Can you imagine a World Cup with no French and Portuguese women.
