HOLLAND PREVIEW

In 1974 my timer went to watch the World Cup and till today he talks of Total Football, The Dutch first goal and of course the Oranje army or Dutch Fans. The sea of Orange he says.Always talks about Cruyff and Neeskans,Ruud Krol. Alas as the years have gone by the Dutch have always under achieved when it came to World Cups. They always had the squad, the Big Name Players but the Dutch could never produce.
As we head into 2010 the Dutch find themselvesin a tricky group alongside Cameroon and Denmark. But they have the squad to do well this year and in midfield and attack the Dutch are strong. They have two of the most in form players in Wesley Sjneider and Arjen Robben. Both coming to South Africa in sublime form. Their front line is also powerful and they have the names. Weak links probably lie in defence. They miss that De Boer,Stam or Koeman type of a player.
But certainly the stars to watch are Robben and Sneijder

Throw some names around, Sneijder ,Robben,Van Der Vaart,Kuyt, van Persie,Babbel,Van Bommel.....The Dutch are strong this year

SUPER 14 FINAL

BULLS HAVE THE BMT
By Gavin Rich www.supersport.com

Both teams were unanimous after Saturday’s Super 14 final in Soweto that the side that won it did so because they had the greater experience of the bigger occasion.

The Bulls beat the Stormers 25-17, but it was their composure in the first half hour, when they took a 16-0 lead, that effectively won them a final that was played in an amazing, noisy atmosphere in front of 40 000 spectators at Orlando Stadium in Soweto.

“I do think our experience of finals helped us,” said victorious skipper Victor Matfield, who joins Crusaders captains Richie McCaw and Reuben Thorne in a group that have won the title three times as captain.
“You could feel it this week. For a team that is used to doing well and has a good record in knockout matches, the semifinal week is often the toughest, the most difficult. You get the feeling that you just need to get through the semi and then the week building up to the final will take care of itself.

“We have been through it before so we knew what it was about. I felt when we were on the way to the stadium on the bus that we were very calm and it made me confident we would win.”

Stormers coach Allister Coetzee praised the Bulls’ composure and said it was an area where his own team was found wanting in the first half, which was when this game was won and lost.
“They are an excellent team and they apply an enormous amount of pressure. They are deserved champions,” said Coetzee.

“We knew the Bulls’ high pressure game was coming, we knew they would attack us with their kiking game, but knowing something is coming and being able to stop it is another thing. I felt we weren’t as composed on the day as the Bulls were. We have grown a great deal this season, and I am sure we will be back to challenge and hopefully take the next step in 2011.
“But we are not quite there yet, this team is still growing, and this match showed that.”
The Stormers needed to bring their A game if they were going to steal away the Super 14 title from the magnificent Bulls, but it was the champions who stepped up when it mattered most.

There is no team in the world better at applying the pressure than the Bulls are. As the Stormers return home licking their wounds on Sunday, perhaps they can take a look at their opponents from the Soweto final and use them as a cue for what they themselves need to do if they are to go one better by winning this competition next year.
Where the Bulls were clinical and unflustered, the Stormers were overly anxious and were prone to mistakes. It did though start for the Bulls where it almost always does start in a final – in the forwards.

“I thought our front-row was magnificent tonight, we put a lot of pressure on in the scrums,” said Matfield.
The lineouts were fairly even through the match, maybe even slightly shaded by the Stormers, but the Cape team did not help themselves by making mistakes early in the game, where they in turn were not helped by the period Andries Bekker spent off the field having a cut attended to.

The Stormers appeared to be expecting the first quarter to be all about aerial ping-pong, and perhaps that is why they sometimes had three loose-forwards back in expectation of downfield kicks. It wasn’t a problem for the Bulls, who just saw that as an opportunity to run it, and it was the reason why the Stormers defensive line suddenly looked vulnerable.
“We don’t worry much about what the opposition might do. The Stormers could have put 10 guys back and it would not have put us off, we concentrate on what we need to do,” said Matfield.

Was this a case of the Stormers paying the price for fielding three players in the back three who are challenged for height? Perhaps it was, and it may be one of the things that needs to be looked at ahead of next year. You can play one or two small playes in the back three, but you struggle when all the players there lack meat.

Whatever the reasons, however, it left the normally impeccable Stormers defensive system looking like it had holes in it, and maybe this is an area where the Bulls took their cue from the Sharks, who inflicted a defeat on the Stormers three weeks ago.
In that game the Stormers looked vulnerable when their opponents ran hard and direct at them down the middle, and among the unforced errors that the Stormers made in the first quarter were a couple of missed tackles that allowed the Bulls to get momentum.
The Stormers were not happy with the refereeing of Craig Joubert, and they had every right to be frustrated with the way he officiated the breakdowns. In the first half it killed the Stormers, as the Bulls kept preventing the Stormers from placing the ball and Joubert did nothing about it.

It was different from the way Joubert has reffed the breakdown the rest of the season, and perhaps this was an occasion where the Stormers’ fine attention to detail backfired on them. They do an extensive study on all referees before each game, and they would not have expected Joubert to blow the breakdown like he did yesterday.

“Yes, I was unhappy about it to be honest, otherwise I would have kept my mouth and not complained like I did on the field,” said disappointed Stormers captain Schalk Burger when he was asked about it afterwards.

Joubert’s refereeing did play a big role in keeping the Stormers on the back foot and preventing them from getting their required momentum, and you have to wonder at the SANZAR decision not to give this important match to the world’s best referee, Jonathan Kaplan.
“In the rest of the season Jourbert has given the advantage to the attacking side and during the season he gave three times as many penalties at the breakdown than Kaplan and Mark Lawrence did, but today he went the other way,” said Coetzee.
But there was no denying the Bulls were the better side on the day. All season the Bulls have given the impression they have drifted in and out of games, but when they do apply pressure they make it tell.

THE DOCTORS DAWAA

THE DOCTORS DAWAA...(MEDICINE)
ALL THE WAY FROM THE CARRIBEAN

I caught up with SA Team manager Dr Moosajee in the Caribbean and found out what is the Doctors medicine on tour over there. Firstly we chatted about the euphoria surrounding 2010 and the atmosphere out here in South Africa. From a cricketing perspective the boys are looking good and relaxed and the Doctor was happy with the form of Hashim Amla and the younger players like David Miller. The Doc says its good to see the younger guys taking up their opportunity and performing
.
I obviously expressed disappointment on South Africas form during the Pro 20 World Cup...and grinded the Doc for some answers.
He said that the team were disappointing and each player is aware of the fact. He also expressed that the key is to build toward the World Cup next year and outlined consistency as the key issue as well as outlining many areas they need to work on to move forward. The players know that they have let the media down
I outlined that many are calling for Smiths head and asked the Doc what he has to say about Smith leading the country presently and in the future. He lept to the defense of Smith saying that Smith has just recovered from injury. In Australia the media hailed him as Captain Marvel and the only thing Smith hasnt done is brought a major trophy home and the media begin calling for his head. The Doc believes that Smith should be given the chance and you cannot blame a Captain when the whole team were not up to par.

The Doc also said that the team is well and just staying away from Jamaica due to the state of emergency. Else all is well with regards to safety,

On Hashim Amla the Doc says he is in a good place and in superb form. Coming from leading county side Nottingham to four successive victories and performing well here in the Caribbean Hash is an integral part of the World Cup Plans next year. His dedication and commitment has no doubt instrumented his place alongside Smith for the future.
Hash is in great fiqr.

With regards to the Proteas supporting Bafana Bafana, The Doc says that they are fully behind the team and expressing tremendous support. They are proudly behind Bafana Bafana and Wayne Parnell, Rusty Theron and Paul Harris along with cricketing SA are performing the Diski Dance all the way in the Caribbean,

Swoosh0018 wishes the DOC,HASH and the PROTEAS all the best on there tour.

BRAZIL PREVIEW

Brazil touched down in South Africa this morning and IL be the first to admit.I hate Brazil. I want them to be dumped out it the group stages. If that happens.

Although Brazil have left out Ronaldinho and Pato the Brazillians are always strong and they have the tournament Pedigree.
Kaka,Maicon,Robinho,Danny Alves and the likes will prove to be lethal in South Africa.
They came to SA during the confederations cup, beat the hosts South Africa in the semi final and annihilated Italy on they way to glory.
Like Man Utd you can never write off Brazil.........You can never.
Brazil are Brazil and when it comes to the World Cup well you know the story.

The weakest link I feel is Dunga. By already leaving out Ronaldinho whom I felt should have been in the team.Dungas decisions could have a say in their quest to be World Champions.

The Stars to shine for me would be Maicon.A fullback who has achieved the treble with Inter and is probably the best right back in the World. And of course there is Kaka. A quiet domestic season could awake this sleeping Giant of Football.

LIVE FROM MADRID

The Kaiser meets Farhad

Bayern supporters making the trek

Inters Brazillian flavour

Swoosh0018 correspondent Farhad Mohamed was at the Bernabeu giving me live feeds between Inter and Bayern. He described the atmosphere as "Simply Sublime". He also met the Bayern Players
Watching it at home with the lads obviously yielded a different opinion. Myself,Freds,Ebie Jay,Aziz,The Timer and Swaar watched it at my place.
There was something lacking. No Juve,Liverpool,Barca or the MANCS, And Killa being the only Bayern supporter I know. The game was ok....BUT BELONGED TO THE SPECIAL ONE.
A sensational treble as his Inter side dominated Europe on all fronts. Two superbly taken goals by Diego Milito proved to be decisive with the second sealing victory for Inter and since Milan and Italian team has won. But Inter have one Italian,or two,or three. One on the pitch in Matterazzi. The core being South American. It was great to see the soldier of football Javier Zanetti lifting the Cup and the Special one enjoying his success. He is off to Madrid now as Inter are crowned the Champions of Europe

ARGENTINA PREVIEW

Maradona, a great on the pitch and a howler of a manager...so say the pundits. Despite teh criticism and stress endured in qualifying, Maradonas Argentina avoided the shock of not qualifying and made it to South Africa. Perhaps this staggering qualifying campaign could make Maradonas men favourites in South Africa. They are after all teh Argentines and have will cup pedigree. But could they make it through in a group that contains Nigeria,Greece and South Korea. Argentina have Messi and a potent strike force. Messi is tipped by many to be the star of 2010 and this soccer showpiece could be his ideal platform for greatness. Fire Power they certainly have and Macherano is key in midfield. But its in defence that I see Argentinas weakness.
And Maradona has started by chosing Gabrielle Heinze instead of Javier Zanetti. How could Maradonaexclude the tractor who is a veteran and a must have in any team. Zanetti and Cambiaso have had a great season and are in line for the treble. How could he exclude them.

I expect Argentina to top the group and my prediction is a quarter final exit.
