ITS A BLUE WEEKEND

Bulls' trophy awash with records
The Bulls were always starting as favourites to win their second Super 14 title, but few would have envisaged a 61-17 massacre over a Chiefs team that was outclassed almost from first whistle to last.

The Bulls players and management have for a while now spoken about their desire to build a dynasty, to start an era of dominance in the competition to rival that of the Crusaders.
At Loftus on Saturday, in front of a sell-out crowd awash in light blue, they added substance to their words with a performance that was emphatic as any seen in any final anywhere. It was their second title, and only two teams have won more Super 14 trophies now than they have -- the Crusaders and the Blues.
The Bulls scored eight tries to two, they led 34-7 at half time, the game was effectively over when they led 21-7 after just 15 minutes. The eight tries was a record for a Super 14 decider, so was the winning margin of 44 points, which eclipsed the 30 the Brumbies won by when they beat the Sharks 36-6 in Canberra in 2001.
Of course, it was also the first time any team had scored more than 50, and ultimately this was anything but the dour final that some might have been anticipating.
When Leila Masanga scored the first try for the Chiefs after just seven minutes had been elapsed no-one would have believed what was about to transpire. Zane Kirchner put up a poor kick, a rare occurrence for him, and his failure to follow it effectively put Masanga in space. You don’t catch Masanga when he is in space, and the try, which was converted to make it 7-0, was greeted by a surreal silence by the massive crowd.
But if the Bulls were as stunned as their supporters they did not show it. Not for nothing is Fourie du Preez rated as the best scrumhalf in the world, maybe even the best rugby player on the planet.
Kirchner, surely now the front-runner for the Springbok fullback jersey for the coming series against the British and Irish Lions, made the initial break for the first Bulls try, but then looked to have butchered it with poor decision-making. No problem, Du Preez just forced himself over from the recycle to level the scores.
The game had hardly been restarted when the Chiefs rather stupidly tried to run the ball from near their own tryline. A big tackle turned over their possession, and there was that man Du Preez, looking for all the world like a wing this time, scorching down the right touchline to make 14-7.
Du Preez then produced an excellent chip kick, just to show what a brilliant allround player he is, to send in Bryan Habana. Then came a trade-mark Morne Steyn drop-goal and a Steyn penalty to make it 27-7 with half time approaching.
A 20 point advantage for the Bulls at the break would already have them out of sight, but they were not done, Habana scoring an intercept try on the stroke of half time to further demoralise the visitors.
The Chiefs tried gamely in the early parts of the second half to fight their way back, and skipper Mils Muliaina did score a good try to bring the gap back to 20. No-one who was present would have been fooled into thinking that there was going to be a resurgence, however, as the Bulls were just too precise and physical, and their defence seldom looked like being breached.
There was a Stephen Donald penalty later, but the light blue tidal wave continued for the rest of the match, with skipper Victor Matfield capping his own excellent game with a try where he simply soared over a loose scrum on the corner flag.
There was another breakaway, this time scored by Pierre Spies, but perhaps the most deserved try was the one scored by Wynand Olivier, who was a constant thorn in the Chiefs’ defence and ended the competition as easily the best South African centre.
For the Chiefs there was a lot of honest endeavour, but they were simply never allowed to settle, either in terms of possession or territory, and it was why the second best team in the 2009 Super 14 came a very distant second on the deciding day.
Scores
Bulls 61 – Tries: Fourie du Preez 2, Bryan Habana 2, Victor Matfield, Pierre Spies, Wynand Olivier and Danie Rossouw; Conversions: Morne Steyn 5 and Burton Francis; Penalties: Morne Steyn 2; Drop-goal: Morne Steyn.
Chiefs 17 – Tries: Leila Masanga and Mils Muliaina; Conversions: Stephen Donald 2; Penalty: Stephen Donald.

CHELSEA WIN THE FA CUP

Scenes were blue again at Wembley when Guus scooped Silverware in the 2009 FA CUP Final. Everton went ahead in just 25 seconds with a cracker from Louis Saha. But the Drog levelled with a powerful header. And it was left to Chelseas loyal Frnak Lampard to deliver a screamer and take the FA CUP to Stamford Bridge. Well done Loks and other Chelsea supporters

FORZA JUVE

It was great for the fact that Juve came runners uo in Serie A. That means no qualifying round for Europe.A great 2-0 victory over Lazio. Milan came third by beating Fiorentina 2-0. But Serie A ,Juve and Inter waived goodbye to to two gladiators. Pavel Nedved will run no more for Juve and Louis Figo's silky skill will be missed. Two great performers and class acts of the game.

Nedved will be remembered by me in that special Semi Final in Turin when his erformance in midfield was World Class. He snuffed out Figo and Zidane and scored the third goal. He was yellow carded and missed teh Final

Arivadece Pavel Nedved. You will always be a Bianconero and your blood black and White

Also Carlo Ancelotti has left Milan. Shakes Galliani has anounced Leonardo as a replacement. How have the Milan Fans been taking this.

And Nadal has bowed out of the French Open. Its a sensational upset. Against Robin Soderling of all people. This could be Federers year.

THE MANCS MESS' IED UP

CONGRATULATIONS TO BARCELONA THE KINGS OF EUROPE

Quote of the week: 100 000 Manchester United Flags for sale - almost new, only waved for 9minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!-Ary Moosa

Well, What a night. Our first victory at Nescafe and Yes the MANCS LOST. It was a fitting climax for us and a happy one for once. I didnt jinx it by making predictions etc but up stepped LIONEL MESSI and the boy was Big tonight. He overshadowed PENALTINO and the MANCS hearts were shattered. Firstly I want to thank Husein from Nescafe Fordsburg for yet another campaign and great hospitality shown to teh crew of Swoosh0018.com. The service was exellent and he has gone out of his way for us throughout ,Thanks for that and well Husain must be upset because the MANCS LOST.

Secondly I want to thank my crew for their support and its always sublime to watch a game with the lads and the chics. Thanks to the members who were present from Day 1. The atmosphere is always great when you have nice company

The game itself was not the most explosive, But Barcelona were the better team,The MANCS didnt play. Barcelona had the most of the chances and their attack was potent. Messi came big on the night and was constantly causing the MANC defense problems. But United were not at their best on the night. It was plain for all to see. They had a few chances but were not explosive or the United we know them to be. When Xavi hit the bar we felt as though the ghosts of Munich would cruelly intervene and spoil a great night for the anti united contingent, And when Messi rose and headed Barca in front by two clear goals, not even the ghosts of Munich could help.
Credit to Sir Alex as he got as far as the final. Perhaps another time but in Rome, It was Barcelona that won the epic battle of two footballing Gladiators.
The question still remains on everyones lips. Will Penaltino GO?

And this epic battle wraps up the end of a great season. Its off to the Confeds Cup now!

The doors were shut,Nescafe packed. Man United vs Barcelona
Atmosphere was great with the crew

Ole Ole Barcelona

As tradition on the blog. A gutted Mamoo after the MANCS lost. Always great to see his face

THE AFTERMATH AT NESCAFE

THE ATMOSPHERE AT NESCAFE

Forever In Our Shadow
"Are you watching Merseyside" the assembled United masses sang before the game in Rome last night. Yes, we are. And how we enjoyed it.
The United fan base have this unhealthy obsession with Liverpool, with everything they do being measured against our own achievements. They cannot play a single game without their fans singing about Liverpool. Everything they strive for exists at the other end of the M62. The odd blog from myself does not constitute hypocrisy on that front. We go to the game to support our own side and very rarely sing about others unless we happen to be playing them. The hatred and jealousy United fans have for us doesn't allow them to do that.
After living in our shadow for so long, they can now see the sun blazing down just a few steps away. Just a couple more strides and they'll walk from that shadow and cast one of their own as the most successful club in the land. They can see the light, and last night missed a huge opportunity to take another huge step away from that darkness.
Alex Ferguson postponed his retirement a number of years ago for one reason only; to win more European Cups.
He has continually stated himself, that to be classed as a truly great side you have to win at least 2 European Cups with the same group of players. You have to win the big one more than once. Thus far he has managed to win it twice, but with each being almost a decade apart. Last night was his chance to achieve his dream and allow self congratulation of drawing alongside the man that casts a constant shadow over him; Bob Paisley.
Ferguson will not rest until he's equalled or surpassed the European Cup haul of Sir Bob. No matter how many league titles he wins, it's the European Cup that really matters, and the trophy that is still the holy grail for all, no matter what anyone says. It may be becoming a tedious competition, with the repetitive nature of playing sides from your own country time and time again, but it's still the one that sets apart the good sides from the great sides. Alex Ferguson will tell you exactly the same.
Arsenal and Chelsea have won the league in recent years, but neither of them have a European Cup to their name. Alex Ferguson has 11 league titles under his belt, but only 2 European Cups; and that hurts him. It also highlights just how special those European successes are.
There are 14 managers that have won 2 European Cups; Alex Ferguson just remains a name amongst that 14, with only one manager standing over the rest having amassed a collection of 3 European Cups. That man is Bob Paisley.
Ferguson might not admit it publically, but he knows that Bob Paisley is the greatest manager of all time. He knows that what Bob achieved in his time at Liverpool will never be surpassed.
Paisley - 6 league titles and 3 European Cups in 9 years
Ferguson - 11 league titles and 2 European Cups in 22 years
If Paisley had another 13 years in charge of Liverpool, giving him a 22 year reign, imagine how many European Cups he could have brought home.
He won the equivalent of 1 European Cup every 3 years. Ferguson has 1 every 10 years.
He won the league 2 out of 3 seasons. Ferguson has won it 1 in 2.
It's not even a contest.
Barcelona last night exposed the lack of "greatness" about this current Manchester United side. The majesty of Iniesta and Xavi in midfield making the axis of Carrick and Anderson look second rate. That's £35m worth of Carrick and Anderson by the way.
£70m rated Ronaldo, £30m purchases Rooney and Berbatov and a £30m striker in Carlos Tevez all on the field for the last half an hour and could do nothing to even threat the Barcelona goal. £160m worth of attacking talent that offered hardly anything. A side put together for vast amounts and completely outclassed by Barcelona.
Where does Ferguson go from here? Open the cheque book again?
This summer is absolutely massive for both Manchester United and Liverpool. We are both level on 18 league titles and as closely matched on the field as we have been in decades. The moves made in the transfer market this summer by both clubs will be crucial in who takes the advantage come next May.
But one advantage I'm convinced Alex Ferguson will never hold, is the one that really matters when separating success from greatness; European Cup glory. We're staying on our perch Alex.
Liverpool 5-3 Man Utd
Forever In Our Shadow
Thanks Fuster for the piece

James Lawton: Beautiful Barça strip the fallen of their crown

To call Barcelona the champions of Europe this morning is to give them their lesser title. The one they demand, unquestionably, is champions of football.Champions of the game that can, even in this high-pressure age of super athleticism and grinding work assignments, still be exquisite. The margin of victory was two goals but the gap between the ambitions, and the execution, of the two teams touched on infinity. In the end the goals of Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi, who outshone a petulant Cristiano Ronaldo quite utterly, merely scraped the surface of Barcelona's superiority. Those of us who doubted the iron content of their constitution, could only watch with a degree of awe – and book ourselves a little stint of self-mockery.United, we believed, were filled with confidence. They had a plan and the steel, but long before the end the plan was in ruins and the steel might have been another form of plastic. Sir Alex Ferguson came here an emperor in search of another coronation. But he left a wiser man – and one still more appreciative of football's capacity to cause both enchantment and shock. The crown, certainly, belonged this night to his young and idealistic and marvellously vindicated rival Josep Guardiola. It will, a neutral football world must hope, be worn for some time.Confirmation of Dimitar Berbatov's exclusion from the starting line-up was the anticipated statement of Ferguson's hard intent: ground-devouring force before languid skill. Berbatov had spent some time explaining that he really is passionate about the cause, but plainly his manager on this occasion preferred his own reading of body language. The roar of Rooney's lung-power and the legs of Park Ji-Sung and Anderson were the old wolf's banker investment on this balmy night beside the Tiber.Of course there was also Ronaldo, in a now familiar brooding mode as he entered the stadium with his status as the world's best footballer never having been so directly challenged. Messi, the gilded contender, also seemed deep in his thoughts when he arrived shortly before Eusebio, the great Benfica player who in 1968 came so close to beating United in their first European Cup final. "Are you a United fan now," he was asked and he replied, with a face as solemn as the one he had when he left the Wembley field all those years ago, "No, I like United and I like Barcelona, but I'm a fan of football and this should be a great match."It should have been indeed, and in some respects it unfolded that way but after just 10 minutes all the confidence Ferguson brought here, all his belief that he had the stronger legs, the stronger hearts and an almost infinitely stronger defence, was critically undermined. It was the work of Andres Iniesta, Barça's saviour at Stamford Bridge a few weeks ago, and Eto'o, who on the same occasion was scarcely visible anywhere near the trenches. Here he exploded into them so ferociously he might have been armed with a hand grenade. Iniesta did the donkey work in the style of the thoroughbred he has been impersonating for some years now – after Michael Carrick, entering a first-half nightmare that would be imposed with increasing touch and confidence by the network of Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez and Messi, lost control of the ball. Iniesta ran 40 yards, with ever-increasing assurance, before slipping the ball to Eto'o.The rest was a grim formality for United as Eto'o went by Nemanja Vidic as though he didn't exist and coolly beat Edwin van der Sar at the near post. You could see so much life draining away from United at that moment of devastation. For a few minutes Ferguson's plan had shown every sign of working as United went at Barça in waves. The effect on the men who had been enchanting so much of the football world for so long was so disconcerting Guardiola found it necessary to rush into the technical area with cries of reassurance. He put them away quickly enough, though, when Iniesta and Eto'o manufactured their tranquilliser. Merlin couldn't have done better. The whole balance of the game was changed. Messi's presence became a little more apparent with each new moment. United sucked in their breath each time he took possession of the ball and by half-time Ferguson's face was harrowed by concern. He was supposed to have the superior defence and the stronger runners but what he didn't have was Barça's capacity to perform outright artistry under the closest attention. It meant that at half-time Ferguson had to do rather more than rally his troops. He had to redefine their point – and their purpose. He also, not too surprisingly, decided he had to bring on Carlos Tevez, in place of the ineffectual Anderson.Tevez, naturally, responded with huge effort and one pass that sent Rooney away along the right was United's most penetrating moment for a good half-hour. However, the worry was that Barça, who saw Xavi's free-kick smack against a post early in the second half, had by now just found too many reasons to believe in themselves. It was a concern heavy enough for Ferguson to dismantle much of his original strategy with 25 minutes to go. Berbatov, earlier judged too passive for the assault that United had planned, came on for the pure runner Park. It seemed like a last throw and there was reason enough to believe it was when Xavi, noting that almost the entire United defence had gone missing, sent a towering cross into the path of the 5ft 7in Messi. It was not the greatest shock of the night that the Little Big Man met it beautifully to arch the ball past Van der Sar.It would be comfortable to say the champions of England were beaten. Unfortunately, though, it ran a little deeper than that. They had been undressed and outclassed by the most beautiful team in all of football.

SUPER TUESDAYS ON SWOOSH0018

What a sporting weekend. The IPL Finale was concluded at the Wanderers and the atmosphere was electric. Hats of to the South African public as we hosted a magnificent event. This weekend the crowd at the FC Mayfair Awards dinner were treated to the charisma of Abdul Bhamgee. Abdul razzled and dazzled the crowd with what he was known for as he represented FC Mayfair and rallied for community support.First though I will start of with some sad news. On Saturday the community of Lenasia and well the sporting community as a whole lost a legend as Mr Abdulhaq "Blikkies" Bismillah sadly passed away.

The Sporting community has again lost one of the individuals who in the past has motivated many sportsman that I firmly believe would have succeeded at the top level but were sadly denied by Politics. Blikkies also sacrificed his time and effort to motivate youngsters from all walks of life to excel and succeed in fullfilling their dreams. Blikkies Bismillah you will be sorely missed.

Now the guys from Lenz High, Mamad Kaloo, Yusufi Bhamjee from Spur Rosebank., you guys can add to some of the quotes by the legendry Mr Bismillah. Il leave you with a few..............

When I went to High School on my first meeting with Blikkies he asked me. "Boy, Who are you Boy? I said "Sir Im Zahier Mayets from Lesco's nephew and Big Mooses cuzzy. He said to me " Boy, Zahier Mayet is a talented footballer. You are a trickster. You look more like an Alipor Elvis"

Jack Manack was walking with Blikkies during a game. Blikkies said to him, "Boy look closely. I am the next Dickie Bird"

Blikkies was famous for making us do frog jumps and jogging. He often used to say. "You know boy. When you jogging boy. You dont have to get tired boy, because you breathing in an out"

"When an Alipor falls in love, His sporting career is over"

Some more Blikkies quotes

“You know boy – Bhamjee is a trickster. He and Ziyaad Patel will burn this school out”

About some footballer – “This boy has got %#$ing talent but then he met this girl and now his mind is f&^$ed up”

After I had an argument about a disallowed goal in a five a side game in Standard six – I had the audacity to call him a Chor He simply said to me “Boy – Your Father is a chor” He then banned me from 5 a side for the rest of the year. Two days later he felt me sorry an lifted the ban.Simply saying “ no discipline will not be tolerated” we then went on to beat alpha primary school 8-0 the next day when they did a school visit.

After doing frog jumps for two full periods – numb legs, couldn’t walk - Mohamed Lorgat cried out “Allah Paak”Blikkies just said : “God won’t even help you now boy” and proceeded to cane us.

After playing for Achievers winning all our games for the season scoring 141 goals including a 17-0 thrashing of greyville city – we lost in the final of the Roshnee tournament to Swaraj 1-0.The lads were upset – I am sure I saw some tears in Freddies eyes.Monday morning with a smug look on his face – He told me “ Boy achievers achieved F&^%all this weekend”

I remember playing for Lenz High in std six against the best of Lenz Primary Schools – Some of those primary school okes like Amit Gandabhai and Tyrone had bigger beards than I have now.I was having a kak game playing centre midfield we were one down and Gandabhai was all over me. I couldn’t do anything. At half time he moved me to left back and took Dean Naidoo off. I though this toppie is crazy – I never played left back in my life. But he said “ Boy Trust me”We ended up winning 3 – 1 . I made all 3 goals down the left cos he took Gandabhai out of the game for me.After the game he told me “Boy - I was coaching Bells while you were in your fathers sack”

These are some of the words and quotes by the Legendry Mr Bismillah. Sir.........You will forever be remembered by sportmen that grew up in front of you..........and difficult to replace.. Swoosh0018 extends condolences to the Bismilla family on the loss of Mr Bismillah. Our thoughts are with you

FROM THE SHOOBS CORNER
ALL THE WAY FROM THE UK

THE ROAD TO ROME

The Red Army have already begun heading towards Rome and for Red fans, getting to this year’s CL final has actually been much harder than last year’s trip to Moscow. Rome being much more accessible to the UK and the rest of the world has meant that MUFC supporters that wouldn’t ordinarily make an effort to watch United play are flocking to Rome for this epic final. Italian authorities are expecting 30 000 Reds to overwhelm Rome, 10 000 of which are arriving ticketless for the match. Moscow was an awkward destination last year primarily because of distance and visa requirements for UK nationals (which fortunately was done away with at the last minute – match tickets served as visas). Being an all-English affair, both sets of fans found it very difficult (and costly) to get to Moscow which resulted in ticket availability for anyone who needed them. This year has been a different story ... Rome is accessible to the UK, by road, rail and air with no visa issues. At worst, if you choose to drive, you are looking at no more than 15-16 hours drive time, if 4 people go in one car the driving can be shared and the costs would be minimal. This has meant that United have been oversubscribed with ticket applications for the final and have created a ballot system awarding tickets to season ticket holders only favouring those who have been for away CL games. You can’t argue with that as it guarantees hardcore, non-plastic fans tickets. Outside of the official channels, tickets have been extremely difficult and costly to come by and I’ve heard about tickets changing hands for £1500+. Apart from the match ticket costs, airline companies have exploited the situation by boosting up their airfares big time. A typical mid-week return ticket to Rome on Easyjet (Europe’s leading budget airline) would cost less than £100.00. The price for a flight leaving the UK tomorrow and returning on Thursday is now around £900.00. It’s f**king sickening to see these companies rape football fans like that. But, if you were fortunate enough to get a ticket to the game and get a decently priced flight to Rome, the biggest concern for Reds in Rome is the massive threat being issued by the Roma hooligans. Italian and British authorities have issued a warning after it was discovered hardcore Roma fans are planning to attack United fans in Rome. There is a genuine fear for travelling Reds and Italian authorities are going to deploy additional police and bring in the army to try and ensure the safety of United Fans. There are also rumours floating around about Roma and Barca firms teaming up to take out the Reds. I’ve been warned by a few Reds to always travel in a group and try to take a taxi whenever possible as opposed to walking.

It’s a pity that the sour Roma fans would look to disrupt what is shaping up to be one of the greatest European finals ever.
As for the result, it’s too hard to call. The fitness of Henry and Iniesta obviously play a vital role in how this tie is going to play out and the fact that they’re back in training with the Barca squad is not the best news for United fans. Ultimately, whatever the result, the team that walks away with the trophy will truly deserve it ... Champions in their own leagues and both playing good football will mean this year’s European Champion will truly be a great one. GO ON YOU REDS !!!

--IPL FINAL-SOUTH AFRICA 2009
Swoosh0018 was at the IPL Final and we got random interviews from the fans, captured the atmosphere. It was terriffic and simply sublime. SA take a bow. The IPL final and atmosphere as well as closing ceremony certainly lived up to its billing. I wanted the Deccon Chargers to win and win they did. Gibbs came big. I was dissapointed not to see the explosives by Gilchrest but when Van De Merwe went and then Dravid and then Taylor it swayed the way of the Chargers.
The hype about the opening Ceremony was also justified, It was nothing short of spectecular. The entertainers were exellent,Akon, Katrina Kaif and Eddie Grant dazzled the fans. As a PIM man I also liked Miss IPL. She looked great. Especially when Akon sang You just so beautiful. The lights, the lasers, the entire spectacle was exhilerating especially if you were there. Stand Up South Africa, Take a bow as we entertained the Best in the World in spectecular fashion. Myself and Ebie Kop End were impressed.

Here are some interviews from some random fans at the Wanderers

This video captures the atmosphere at the Bullring. Purely Sublime

A video of the closing Ceremony. We shot from a distance as it was held on the opposite side. But just to be there was magnificent!

Well its Finally arrived. My party of 10 will be at Nescafe Fordsburg on Wednesday night to watch a dream final. Barcelona, the Champions of Spain vs Man United, the Champions of England. Who will be the best in Europe. Its also a battle between Lionel Messi and Christiano "Penaltinho" Ronaldo. Who will be the best in the World!

Will Sir Alex stick to his formula and play a 4-5-1. Will he miss the shite Darren Fletcher. You know you get certain players that are not World Class players like Fletcher and Carrick, They premiership players. Now I know the MANCS will get pissed off with me for making that statemet. But they were all moaning when Fletch got a Yellow and missed the final. But let me not talk alot before a big game like this as is my Superstition. Let me not Kinx it for Barcelona. You all know who I favour. So tomorrow evening we hope to see Puyol Lift the UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TROPHY and for once maybe we can have a Barcelona Banner floating on the top of this blog

I Do Not Fear Lionel Messi, I Respect Him - Cristiano Ronaldo
The Champions League final will not be about a game between two players, but Cristiano Ronaldo admits that he is a big fan of Lionel Messi...Lucas Brown

Cristiano Ronaldo is relishing the prospect of testing himself against Barcelona in the Champions League final - and against Lionel Messi - but he is not fearful of the Argentinian. The game in Rome is being billed as a showdown between the two best teams and the two best players as the English champions meet la Primera Division winners. While the media continue to hype the game up, Ronaldo was keen to play down his and Messi's roles in the game, and stated that he is a big fan of the Barca trickster."It is not good to go on to the pitch in awe of somebody but I very much respect Lionel Messi as a player," he is quoted as saying by the News of the World."He has a great style of play and I am sure he will be as excited about the final as I am."Manchester United are confident that they can win the Champions League for the second consecutive year and Ronaldo embodies that belief."This year, it is the final between the two best teams in the world and I think it is the showpiece that, perhaps, the football fan wanted to see," he continued."They have an excellent player in every position on the pitch but so do we. We know how well we have to play to beat them and we know how much respect we need to show them by playing to the top of our ability."But we are full of confidence at the moment and believe we can be the first team to win it back-to-back."

WEEKLY SPORTING ROUND UP

TEARS ON TYNESIDE

On the last day its always good to see the emotions and the tears that flow when teams go down. On Tyneside it was dark days as perhaps touted as teh most passionate bunch of fans were doomed to relegation. Its tragic for two young managers who shared teh same disappointment at Euro 96. But Villa and West Ham sent Shearer and Southgate to the 1st Division. Tears flowed,Hull and Sunderland survived. The rest of the teams must build for next year. I wonder what Rafa has in store for us. But the spotlight fell on Newcastle. From the time of Keegan and Robson Shearer and his Toon army are gone

In LA Liga and Serie A, It was wrapped up last year, But juve won the first game under Ferraro thanks to a brace from Alex Del Piero.

The Super 14 Final will prove to be a cracker. Fans qued at Loftus to get their match tickets for Saturdays Super 14 Final. Its going to be a belter. Will the Bulls win to our rugby pundits.?

The French Open has started and all eyes are on Nadal and Federer again. Clay is about guts and tactics and the will to out think an opponent and where stamina is vital.

In the Monaco Grand Prix. Yes its the only time the Britons are winning something. Jenson Button won again

ARIVADECI PAOLO

This week AC Milan, The San Siro and now the blog will say goodbye to a loyal servant of football, Poalo Maldini on Sunday played his last game for AC Milan. Its remarkable that at his age he kept going. I remember coming back from madressah in 1990 and watching Maldini at left back, and now to see him retire as a legend. AT HIS AGE!.Its astonishing. Arivadeci Poalo Maldini. Shakes your thought on this. There were a few Milan Die hards that marred the send off by displaying banners about Baresi being the greatest defender. Franco obviously was disappointed by the Milan loyals. However Football had lost its servant. Many greats paued tribute to Maldini. Goodbye Poalo!

MEXICO 1970

WOZA SA 2010 WOZA

MEXICO 1970
“THE WORLD AT THEIR FEET”

The 9th edition of the FIFA World Cup was held in Mexico. This was the first time that the FIFA World Cup was held outside of Europe and South America. Morocco became the first African nation post World War II to qualify for a FIFA World Cup Tournament. Surprisingly Argentina failed to qualify by losing to Peru in Argentina. Mexico 1970 was the first World Cup to be televised live in colour. As a result of this, for the first time Yellow and Red Cards were introduced. The inventor of the Yellow and Red Card was English referee Ken Aston who refereed the infamous Battle of Santiago Match between Chile and Italy in 1962.

This was also the first World Cup where substitutes were allowed. Previously if a player was injured no substitutions were allowed. It was also the first time that an official Match Ball was introduced by Adidas at the FIFA World Cup. The Ball was called the Adidas Telstar.

The official mascot of the 1970 World Cup was Juanito.

The 1970 World Cup had the same format as in 1966 with 4 groups of 4 teams with the top 2 teams qualifying for the quarterfinals. There were disputes over the organisation of the tournament with the major controversy surrounding the times of games. It was decided to play certain games at 12 noon due to television broadcasting in Europe. The participating teams took objection as they felt the heat in Mexico was too severe to play games at that time. This World Cup also had no seeds, teams were separated into groups by the geographical sections.
There was further controversy before the start of the World Cup as England’s World Cup Winning Captain, Bobby Moore, was arrested in Columbia for an alleged theft of a bracelet. He was released on bail and allowed to appear at the World Cup and the charges were later dropped.

Group 1
In the opening game hosts Mexico played to a goalless draw against the USSR. The first ever substitute at the FIFA World Cup was Anotali Puzach who came on for USSR. USSR’s Lochev also became the first player to receive a yellow card. However both USSR and Mexico won their next two games to qualify 1st and 2nd respectively. The Soviets were more convincing with their 4-1 victory over Belgium and 2-0 victory over El Salvador. Mexico won both their games controversially, 4-0 against El Salvador in the first ever match between 2 teams from the same continent outside of Europe and South America. El Salvador players protested heavily, so much so that the referee blew the half time whistle early during the protests as play was not resumed. Mexico also beat Belgium 1-0 thanks to a debatable penalty.

Group 2
The Italians succeeded in qualifying top of the group without conceding a goal, beating Sweden 1-0 and followed it up with 2 goalless draws against Uruguay and first timers Israel. Sweden beat Uruguay 1-0 in the final game of the group but lost out to Uruguay on goal difference as they needed to win the game 2-0. Earlier Uruguay beat Israel 2-0 and Sweden could only manage a draw against them.

Group 3
Defending Champions England got their campaign off to a good start with a 1-0 victory over Romania. However Brazil with the likes of Pele and new superstars Gerson, Jairzinho, Captain Carlos Alberto, Tostao and Rivelino were making waves at the World Cup after their 4-1 hammering of Czechoslovakia in their opening game with a superb performance by Jairzinho. Brazil then went on to beat England 1-0 thanks to a brilliant combination between Tostao and Pele who passed to Jairzinho to net the winner. The score remained 1-0 thanks to the heroics of English goalkeeper Gordon Banks notably Banks Save of the Century from Pele’s powerful Header. Brazil however made England wait for 5 minutes extra after the half time break in the boiling sun. Brazil then beat Romania 3-2, with Pele scoring a Superb Free Kick, and won the group. England beat Czechoslovakia 1-0 to qualify 2nd.

Group 4
West Germany returned hoping to go one step better then in 1966 and went about their business in clinical style with 3 victories out of 3 including a 5-2 victory over Bulgaria and a 3-1 victory over Peru. Gerd Muller scored consecutive hatricks in these games. Prior to their 3-1 loss against West Germany Peru beat Bulgaria 3-2 with an amazing comeback after going behind 2-0. Peru then beat Morocco 3-0 to also qualify for the quarterfinals. Teofilo Cubillas scored for Peru in all 3 of their matches.

Quarterfinals
The Italians who qualified top of their group for the quarterfinals were dull in doing so scoring just 1 goal in their 3 group games. However in the quarterfinals against hosts Mexico they went a goal behind early on. The Italians then put on a sensational display to win the game 4-1. Uruguay who sneaked through to qualify beat the USSR 1-0 with a late goal in the 2nd half of extra time which the Soviets felt was illegal as they believed the ball to have gone out of play in the build up to the goal. Brazil were now in full flight with their breathtaking and free flowing attacking football. Their attractive and attacking football display was carried on in the quarterfinals against Peru with a thrilling 4-2 victory. The combination play between Tostao and Rivelino was brilliant. They both created each others goals as Brazil took a 2-0 lead. In a rematch of the 1966 final England took on West Germany. The English were dealt a severe blow before the game even started as star goalkeeper Gordon Banks fell ill and would not feature. West Germany were trailing 2-0 to England who were looking set to beat the Germans once again. However a brilliant goal from Beckenbauer inspired the Germans and they equalised late on through Seeler to take the game into Extra Time. Gerd Muller continued his scoring spree by netting the winner in the 2nd half of Extra Time (Photo).

Semi-Finals
The Semi-Finals produced 4 previous World Champions, 3 of which were double World Champions. In the All South American Semi-Final Brazil fell behind early on after Cubilla scored for Uruguay. But the brilliance of Brazil was too much for Uruguay and they equalised through Clodoaldo. Jairzinho gave Brazil the lead and Rivelino ensured Brazil made the final. Perhaps the most memorable moment of this game was a Pele dummy against Uruguay’s goalkeeper where he let the ball run pass him and so confused the goalkeeper. After running around the keeper to retrieve the ball Pele narrowly missed the goal with his attempt from a very difficult angle.
Game of the Century

In the All European semi-final Italy took on West Germany. This game was a pure thriller from start to end. Boninsegna gave Italy the lead early on and Italy looked like holding on until the very last minute when Schnellinger equalised. In Extra Time the goals were a plenty. Gerd Muller gave the Germans the lead however Burgnich and Riva restored Italy’s lead but up popped Muller, scoring his 10th of the tournament, to equalise. Gerd Muller’s 10 goals would make him the tournaments top score. Just a minute later Rivera gave Italy the lead which they kept till the end. Franz Beckenbauer got injured in the 2nd half and played the rest of the game with his arm in a sling as he had dislocated his shoulder. Although substitutes were allowed Germany had already used up both Beckenbauer showed great commitment to continue playing. This game is considered the greatest ever game and is known as the Game of the Century. It is also known as Partita del Soco in Italy and Jahrhundertspiel in Germany. A monument outside the Estadio Azteca Stadium in Mexico City was constructed to commemorate this great game.

Third Place Playoff
West Germany took consolation after their defeat to Italy with a 1-0 victory over Uruguay. Overath scored the winner. Once again the Beckenbauer and the German team fell short.

Finals
After Italy’s triumph over Germany in the semi-finals and Brazil’s victory over Uruguay this would be the final team that the Jules Rimet Trophy would be presented to the World Cup Winners as both Italy and Brazil had won 2 World Cups previously. Italy may have started the tournament unconvincingly but really showed their true value as finalists with their knockout performances. Brazil on the other hand were magnificent on route to the finals with breathtaking attacking flair and brilliance. The final was to be played at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.

The finals began well for Brazil with a clinical header from Pele giving them the lead. Boninsegna of Italy however equalised before the break. Pele scored a goal on the stroke of half time but strangely the referee blew the half time whistle at that exact moment and the goal was not allowed. In the 2nd half it was all one way traffic. Italy became scrappy and Pele waas kicked in the head in the penalty area but instead of a penalty an indirect fre kick was given. Brazil bossed the game with Man of the Match Gerson blasting home Brazil’s 2nd goal to restore the lead. Gerson was dictating the midfield and soon Brazil took a 3-1 lead as Pele fed the ball to Jairzinho who scored. This goal by Jairzinho meant that he had scored in every single game of the World Cup. Holding a 3-1 lead Brazil had almost ensured that they were the first ever 3 times World Champions and would keep the Jules Rimet Trophy forever. No for the icing on the cake. A goal that is regarded by many as the greatest goal of all time. A fluent passing move from the Brazilian team from their own Penalty to completion by Captain Carlos Alberto in the back of the Italian goal. Have a look and decide.
The victorious Captain Carlos Alberto holds aloft the Jules Rimet Trophy for the final time.

Brazil had become the first ever 3 times World Cup Champions. The Brazilian players were mauled on the field by the thousands of spectators. Pele & the Brazilians were stripped of their soccer kits as the spectators rushed to capture as many tokens of the great side they could. This meant that the Jules Rimet Trophy would be theirs to keep forever and a new world Cup Trophy would be made. The Masters of the Game were magnificent in their 3rd success at the FIFA World Cup. Pele, Tostao, Rivelino, Gerson, Jairzinho and Captain Carlos Alberto are regarded by many as the greatest attacking team ever. The beautiful game was brought back by the magical Brazilians at this 9th FIFA World Cup.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
Liverpool will only win the league when Sir Alex Ferguson dies!-Mamoo

Okay you MANCS, No OPRAH WINFREY post this time. I'm writing this post with a heavy heart and I swallow my pride to say "Congratulations". Firstly to the readers GET READY for a bumper Super Tuesday post that starts today. Well what can I say. We lost the title, we lost it early with those costly draws and losses against Stoke, Hull, Lucas selling against Everton,Spurs and Arshavin f$#king us up. But credit to the MANCS, they kept up the pressure all the way and everyone expected Arsenal to do the business, but it was not meant to be. I must admit United were complacent and anxious and afraid to concede and Arsenal were game but it was not to be and they are the CHAMPIONS at that's what counts.

For me, no wedding, not that I'm complaining lol but since I started this blog I would have to endure this painfull moment every MAY. As agreed The blog has read and I have kept to my word. It is too painfull for me to carry on. I'm sure our MANCS as agreed will send in their posts, Herbly,Joe Rasool, Go,Shakes,Joe Dindar,Azee, Biggy, Mamoo,Seth,Rash BC, Shoobs and anyone I have forgotten. I leave it to you guys and and an article from Soccernet.com. So any MANC that wants to post,Mail me your article in this Bumper Super Tuesday. The rest of the soccer and sporting action I will post tomorrow including a bumper day at the IPL.

The pain is too much now.Enjoy you f#4king MANCS and Congratulations with a Heavy heart and lots of Hasad (JEALOUSY).As I said I will give the MANCS free reign on the blog.Below is a picture sent in by Shakes

Just one thing I want to mention. About the arrogant Penaltinho. Did you MANCS notice that when the broadcast switched to the change room Sir Alex greeted every player and congratulated them, but when he came to Ronaldo it was seen by all that he just shook his hand and walked on. Is this the End of Penaltinho. Just a hand shake.

Sir Alex Ferguson will continue as manager of Manchester United for "a number of years'', according to chief executive David Gill.

More title joy for Sir Alex Ferguson
The 67-year-old sealed his 11th Premier League title in 23 years at the Old Trafford helm with yesterday's 0-0 draw against Arsenal.
That drew the club level with Liverpool on 18 top-flight titles, leading to speculation Ferguson could retire if they usurp their great rivals next season.
Gill, though, does not see an end to the Ferguson era in sight.
He told Radio Five Live's Sportsweek programme: "He's still very motivated to go on and win things with Manchester United.
"He loves the game, he loves everything associated with the game, he's very well supported by his staff and by the players. He's very much still 100% working at Manchester United.
"I don't think you could read (much into) beating Liverpool - everyone makes great play of that.
"Equalling their record, which is a fantastic record, is obviously wonderful for the club but who's to say what will happen next year?
"What we've done this year in terms of the number of games we've had to play and what we've achieved is testament to everyone and he recognises there's a lot more to come from the squad and hopefully, as I say, it will go on for many years.
"What Alex has done quite correctly is understand how to structure the club and he just takes the big decisions, and he delegates very well to a very experienced staff, a highly motivated staff, and he's got a great team around him so it all works.
"As long as Alex continues to do that, which I'm sure he will, he'll want to stay involved with Manchester United and run the team.
"I envisage him being manager certainly for a number of years, but I'm not going to put a timeline on it.''
Liverpool have been United's fiercest challengers this season before finally having to concede defeat yesterday, leaving them still without a title in the Premier League era.
Boss Rafael Benitez pointed to the amount of money United have spent on players as the key difference between the pair - a view swiftly countered by Gill today.
"That's a nonsense,'' he continued. "Analysis was done that shows we're broadly in line with them over the last few years in terms of net spend on players.
"I think there's a lot of factors in it. We've not only got great players and a great manager but we've got a great off-the-field team as well.
"We've got a fantastic stadium, 76,000, which gives us a competitive advantage, our commercial team are doing fantastic deals, which we then put back into the club.
"We've got many advantages through our current structure, which keeps us apart.
"Benitez would say they've had a very good season, they've run us close and I'm sure they'll be even more motivated next season.''
Asked about the secret of United's continued success, Gill, who does not envisage major changes in the squad over the summer, said: "I think it's the very fact that everybody at the club understands you can't take things for granted. If you win one year we want to go on and improve and we've done that.
"Alex has revamped the squad continually over the past 10-15 years and that's what we will aim to do going forward.
"Special mention for Ryan Giggs, an amazing 11th title, I'm sure we'll never see that beaten. He personifies the club and what we're trying to achieve.''
United's trophy-laden season, which has already brought the Carling Cup and Club World Cup to Old Trafford along with the Premier League title, could yet get better still with the Champions League final against Barcelona to come on May 27.
"It has been a wonderful season,'' reflected Gill. "Obviously Japan and the Carling Cup and the league but it's not finished yet. We've got the little matter of a game in Rome in 10 days' time.
"It's wonderful, it's mouthwatering - two of the best footballing teams in Europe will be in it.
"The final is a day after (legendary late manager) Sir Matt Busby's 100th birthday and we're obviously hoping for a repeat of the Cup Winners' Cup final in Rotterdam in 1991 (when they beat Barcelona 2-1).''

In LA LIGA Madrid lost and Barcelona deservedly won the Spanish Championship so in Rome its gonna be the Kings of Spain vs the Kings of England. Well done PEP, Sorry Riyad Loonat and lets be honest Messi and Co fully deserved it

What misery for me as INTER won teh Scudetto. Juve drew again and now must leapfrog Fiorentina. Milan and Juve have themselves to blame for giving Mourinho the Scudeeto. A string of poor results sent Inter Clear without any pressure. The Mancs won the league,Inter won the league, Del not coming to SA. Can it get any worse. But f#4k INTER.

Swoosh0018 goes Interactive. We got some comments from some of the lads that we came across the weekend.

Little Hash from Trichardt
"I got faith in Arsenal, But Man United are worthy Champions"

PAPI from Nescafe

"Swoosh you know Liverpool and Chelsea and the rest can not come near Man United. They played well the whole year and are deserving Champions

ZAHIER MOOSA-Bros swaar from Debonairs Lenz

"It was a massive, massive game for us,it was either taking a point against Arsenal or against Hull next weekend. It was awesome getting the result this weekend for two obvious reasons.Firstly it relieves alot of pressure going into the final weekend, the obvious reason being that Hull are fighting to stay up and that would have made it a tough trip.Playing smaller opposition is much more tougher than playing Big Boys like we saw against Wigan. Secondly it was more awesome getting the result this weekend because it gives us time to prepare for the Barca clash which is going to be a classic. On the whole its been another fantastic season.Pool fans are dissapointed again.Credit to Fergie, He took over with seven titles and brought us level with Pool on 18. Super Record,21 years must be a long time waiting for Pool fans but i sign off with just four words. Glory Glory Man United"

ZAAHID GARDA-MAN UTD FAN

"It is really amazing to think that when Sir Alex Ferguson started his Manutd career, the record stood at : Liverpool 18 titles, Manutd 7. For every season since Liverpool fans boasted having the most titles! That record is now gone! The best thing for me as a Manutd fan, was the comments by the manager and players at the celebrations. The hunger to win the premier league for a 19th time next season was there to see! you've gotta love it!!After going 3 seasons without a league title, Roy Keane leaving, The Glaziers taking over, it seemed it was an end of an era and people were calling for Fergi to be sacked. He responded by assembling what could potentially be the greatest Manutd team of all-time. Long live Ferguson!"

This is me sitting at Nescafe. Dejected. But my word is my honour ,enjoy the moment you F#$king MANCS

Yusuf Saloojee (Trichardt)

"All I can say is Glory ,Glory Man United and Hard Luck liverpool"

Moosa Areff-Arsenal Fan
"Awesome endorsement for the beautiful game,Arise Sir Alex, You are a legend indeed"

Mohamed Patel-Middleburg
Liverpool are the only team in the history of the league to lose the least games and yet lose the league. I refused to congratulate the MANCS as it was undeserved
(you can see he is the brew of legendary MANC HATER Faheem Vehzerz)

Zaid Saloojee-Trichardt-Arsenal Fan
Failure motivates. We shall come back stronger next season. Our teams stronger and theres still a lot to come. Its work in progress

SHAKES
I hope we gonna see the blog in United Colours for the next two weeks! Glory Glory Man UTD

FROM THE SHOOBS CORNER
ALL THE WAY FROM THE UK

So in 1994 there was this banner in Anfield, which read "Come back and sing Ooohh Ahh Cantona when you've won 18". Well, here we are ... 18 Titles !!! Eleven of these coming under the guidance and leadership of our gaffer Sir Alex Ferguson, without doubt the best manager in the Premiership if not the world !!!I was fortunate enough to be at Old Trafford on Saturday to witness Manchester United lift their 18th league trophy and 3rd in a row. I found the crowd not as loud as when we were awarded the trophy against West Ham in 2007 but this one is without doubt extra special, for a number of reasons; On the back of the season we had last year, winning the title again this year is huge and goes to show the will and determination of the United squad and SAF. Reaching the CL final and FA Cup semi-final along with winning both the League Cup and FIFA World Club Cup meant that we’ve played a fair amount of games and without the depth United have, the season would have been even that much more difficult. Players like Macheda, Wellbeck and Gibson that didn’t receive medals were still key to United’s success making this season’s title truly a team effort. Lastly, it’s number 18 which puts us on par with the scouse mob ... this one has obviously hurt them more than usual judging from the reaction from a lot of their followers and even the bitterness from their Gaffer who was not gracious enough to witness defeat.

I can hardly imagine what the scouse army must have felt when “Are you watching Merseyside???” filled the air at Old Trafford on Saturday. Still, credit must be given when due and Liverpool were fantastic this season especially during the run-in. They pushed United harder than any other club and up until the United game at Wigan it was too hard to call a winner and I think that is what made this season and this title so special. Ultimately, United and Liverpool are the powerhouses of English football. CFC can throw as much money as they want at the game and Arsenal can continue playing “Pop Idol” and discovering “unbelievably promising talent” but they will always take a back seat to United and Liverpool. Our clubs have the history and our fans have the passion. But WTF is up with Rafa, he’s really embarrassed himself in the English media and since his famous “FACT RANT” and he’s gotten worse ... yes United and Liverpool are sworn enemies but there still has to be mutual respect and the Spanish waiter simply does not understand that. His claims that Liverpool are the better team even though United won the title and United have spent more money than Liverpool have made him the laughing stock of English football. Also his comments about offering his congratulations to United but not to SAF have left him being portrayed as a bad loser. Managers and players in the Premier League have unanimously stated United have been the team to have set the standard and are the most difficult team to play against. Their dedication and effort are unmatched and are deserved winners, but Rafa refuses to acknowledge being beaten, it’s very sad. Liverpool and football deserve more from him than sour grapes...The buzz outside the stadium before kick-off was great ...

Mancs were going mental in the street, Pete Boyle was rocking the Bishop Blaize and during the game the Streford End was going wild. The entire stadium boo’d when Tevez was subbed and “Fergie, Sign him Up” was frequently chanted throughout the game, the chances of him staying are slim especially since he wasn’t in attendance at the Man United Awards Ceremony last night. That being the only downer for United at the moment. So now it’s off to Rome to face the mighty Barcelona ... a game to close to call but no doubt a dream final. Let’s hope United can cap off the season with what would be a glorious victory, but for now the REDS GO MARCHIN ON, ON, ON !!!

SUPER 14 UPDATE

Why Bulls must be favoured
by Gavin Rich 18 May 2009

By finishing top it means that the Crusaders, who beat them narrowly in the league game in Christchurch a month and a half ago, have to come to Loftus for Saturday’s semifinal, with the Chiefs and Hurricanes clashing in Hamilton on Friday. Playing the Bulls on the Highveld is a very different proposition to playing them on the south island of New Zealand, and Richie McCaw’s men will know it.
The one thing that might help the Kiwis, however, is the fact that they were in South Africa not that long ago. Indeed, it is only just over a fortnight since they beat the Lions just down the road from Loftus, at Coca-Cola Park in Johannesburg. The previous week they played in Bloemfontein.
The Pretoria semifinal is going to be intriguing from the point of view that these are the two teams that have most recently tasted Super 14 success, and they are also undeniably the two sides in the last four best equipped to play finals rugby.
Remember there are no bonus points on offer in a semifinal. As will be the case when the Springboks play the British and Irish Lions in a three-test series a month from now, the winner, in the words of an old Abba song, will take it all -- and it won’t make a difference if there were ten tries in the match, or none.
The fact the Sharks had to score four tries to win probably helped the Bulls in their narrow win in what was a test match type atmosphere in Durban. A lot of people are saying that the Sharks scoring four tries in the game was proof that they should have had a more attacking mindset earlier in the season, but this neglects the small fact that the Bulls scored more points than them in the game.
As Saturday’s game showed, picking up try-scoring bonus points doesn’t count for anything if you don’t win the match. And the Sharks would arguably have been much better placed to win had the Crusaders not scraped home against the Blues earlier that same day and forced the home team to chase four tries.
For a start, needing just a win might have led the Sharks to be more composed and controlled in the opening half, where they wasted scoring opportunities by being too frenetic. They would also have taken their kicks at goal, particularly the one from right in front of the posts in the second minute.
That was a no-brainer, or at least it should have been, and some might argue that it cost the Sharks the match. But the point is that the Bulls, after coming through such an important game against a strong team like the Sharks and in front of such a large crowd, showed with their composure that they are well equipped to win this competition for a second time.
It would be understandable if they consider the Crusaders to be their biggest obstacle to the trophy. They beat the Hurricanes in Wellington on their overseas tour, essentially proving in that match that there are times when doing hardly any playing at all is the way to go, and they also beat the Chiefs when the two sides met at Loftus more recently.
Of all the semifinalists, the Hurricanes had the easiest passage through the last weekend, with their 37-28 win over the Reds being more comprehensive than the final scoreline might suggest.
The Crusaders had to rely on a late drop-goal to get them home against the Blues in a match where they also admittedly were probably better than that scoreline. Certainly the two TMO decisions made in the second half, both which went against Crusaders, were questionable.
The Chiefs were made to sweat much more than many critics would have anticipated as they got an exciting and tense final weekend of league action off by beating the Brumbies 10-7 in the early game on Friday. The Waratahs ensured that they maintained their challenge into the final day by scraping home against the Lions in another nailbiter.
