WELL DONE ABBERS-YOU MAKING US PROUD

As we always say on Swoosh0018 its a great feeling when our Chaps perform on the big stage and Well done to Yusuf Abdullah for some sublime recent performances in the IPL.Check this article below from cricket.co.za

Being in the right place at the right time can often do wonders for your career and taking the wicket of the Australian captain in your Twenty20 international debut won’t do you any harm either.
That is part of the story of the rise and rise of 26-year-old Durban swing bowler Yusuf Abdulla, whose hot streak of form in South Africa’s domestic season was enough to attract the attention of DLF Indian Premier League franchises.
And as is often the case, one man’s mishap turned out to be good fortune for him when the Kings XI Punjab had to hastily find a replacement for West Indian Jerome Taylor who was injured in a car accident in the build up to IPL.
Kings XI Punjab management’s thinking was: We’re playing six matches in Durban, so why not sign a young bowler who knows Kingsmead like the back of his hand? Abdulla’s 10 wickets at 16.88 in the domestic Pro20 competition had impressed the South African national selectors enough for him to get into the squad for two 20-overs internationals against Australia on home soil, and when he was called up for one of them he found the edge of Ricky Ponting, one of the most attacking batsman in the world, for a caught behind dismissal he will be able to tell his grandchildren about.
An average start in the IPL was followed by two standout performances in-a-row in the Kings XI Punjab’s first two victories of the tournament, after they had lost their first two in rain-curtailed contests.
No surprises… the first was in Durban – a seven-wicket triumph against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Friday, with a personal return of four for 31. And then came Cape Town, where the defending champions Rajasthan Royals were on the receiving end.
Abdulla grabbed two wickets in his second over, Robert Quiney caught by wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara and Dimitri Mascarenhas, who had his stumps shattered two balls later. At the end of the innings Abdulla castled the Royals’ top-scorer Ravindra Jadeja for 37 to finish with three 21, and shoot to second spot on the table of wicket-takers, one behind Deccan Chargers’ RP Singh.
Singh and Abdulla are both left-arm swing bowlers, and South Africa themselves have an embarrassment of riches in this department right now. Apart from Abdulla, they gave debuts to two others in the summer, Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Wayne Parnell.
Some may say the Johannesburg-born Abdulla, is carrying around too many kilograms. If so, it doesn’t seem to affect his bowling performance. His pace is good and with his swing he can beat the best of bats.
There have been patches where his fielding has let him down. For example, in a vital Pro20 playoff game for the Dolphins against the Cobras, Abdulla put down a regulation catch in the deep at square-leg to give Graeme Smith a life. The Proteas captain made three scores in the 30s in playoffs and on that occasion he was able to give his side necessary impetus with a spate of quick boundaries.
With Abdulla showing match-winning ability in the IPL, it is something of an irony that the man regarded as the best limited-over bowler in South Africa, Charl Langeveldt, has not been given a run by the Kolkata Knight Riders.
But, for now, lefties rule, okay!

SEMI FINALS FIRST LEG

MAN UTD VS ARSENAL
It was a packed house at Nescafe Fordsburg again as we watched the MANCS or should I say hoped the MANCS were gunned down. But again it was disappointment and credit to the MANCS.They outplayed Arsenal. Aluminia was called upon many a time and it could be more.
Lucky that Penaltino shot didnt go in. What a strike but. I think thats all Penaltinho did. Overall though Arsenal were woeful or were the MANCS just better. UTD controled the game from teh outset and even though its the first leg and both games are pretty open.Arsenal were disaapointing on the night. I knew the MUGGS will fail against UTD. But UTD will be sorry that they didnt take more from the game
Berbatov really looks like he has no liss to play. I think the MANCS should dump him.
ABR-DID YOU SEE PENALTINHO DIVE AND CRY!
But to the second leg we go and its all OPEN. Arsenal at the Emirates, but if the MANCS get that away goal. Its game over
CHELSEA VS BARCELONA
It was a boring game and a boring Chelsea. But the tactic worked and suits Chelsea. Maybe they believe that they can beat Barcelona at the Bridge. Barca though should feel hard done by. A strong penalty decision was turned down and Borjan missed a sitter.Bosingwa had Messi taped and 0-0 was drab. Tonight though should be interesting. Lets see if Arsenal and Asharvin can do the damage.

Come on Arsenal. Prove yourselves tonight. I wonder if the toppie Fergie will attack or play defensive. Are you MANCS worried

SUPER TUESDAYS ON SWOOSH0018

Another long weekend has passed and a busy one for me. Wedding on the weekend and a glittering function on Saturday Night. And while the food was being sent from the Degs to the tables the owes were chanting out the scores of the Man Utd game.

When the Soup came out it was 2-0. When they served the Mutton Karrai and prawn curry, It was 5-2. What the f34k. Even the grooms father, my oom Imtiaz who was smiling more at the Nikaah when the Anfield result filtered in lost his sparkle.

And then obviously 80% of the hall was all smiles when the score read 5-2.
I mean a team with honour and prestige like Spurs you expect them to hold a 2-0 lead. I was at the wedding so i dunno how was the game. But UTD must have been in sublime form to come down from two goals and win 5-2. And rumours are flying that KAKA could be on his way there. If he does which I dont think he will then they will surely be FULL OF SHIT.
But what again supposed to be a great moment for us turned sour and became a great moment fro the MANCS

As for Liverpool and Chelsea they both won.I didnt watch the game so i cant comment but it all meant nothing when the MANCS bounced back from what we all thought was defeat

Juve also are f#4king it up in Serie A after drawing 2-2 with Reginna. Milan won four and Inter were beaten by Napoli. Is the title race wide open?

In La Liga

And in Bundesliga Klinsman was sensationally sacked.Killa please comment on this.

And in local ball, Tukkies and Pretoria University have progressed to the final of teh Nedbank Cup.What a thing that is
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IPL is class to watch and at this stage the Deccon Chargers look like they going all the way. I got my money on Adma Gilchrest and Gibbs and Co.
But great spell of bowling yesterday from our very own Yusuf Abdullah. 3/21.Thats great figures.Cant wait for the action to hit JHB. But please feel free to leave comments on the IPL Action.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rafael Nadal won again in Monte Carlo and is unbeaten on 25 matches. Now its off to the Rome Masters series.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As for Formula 1.Can someone please tell me if Ferrari are part of F1 this season?

As for Super 14

It’s on for Bulls and Sharks
by Gavin Rich 27 April 2009 (07:11)
Pierre Spies © Gallo ImagesThe South African teams helped each other out and also got some assistance from others to leave the Vodacom Bulls and Sharks strongly in the running for home semifinals after the tenth round of the Vodacom Super 14.
Click here for the latest rugby video highlights

With three weekends of league action remaining, the Bulls are second following their excellent 33-27 win over the Chiefs in the plum fixture of this past weekend at Loftus. The Sharks, who looked as though they may fall out of the top four during their off-week, saw things conspire in their favour and managed to hold onto fourth.
It was a well deserved win for the Bulls, and it brought to an end a six-match unbeaten run for the Chiefs.
As predicted, the game was a clash of styles, with the Bulls’ game triumphing as perhaps it always was going to at altitude, and perhaps it should be surprising that the Chiefs’ first false note in a while came against one of the better defence and territory orientated teams in the competition.
Earlier on Saturday both the Bulls and Sharks were helped in their quest for semifinal places by the excellent win the Cheetahs scored against the Crusaders in Bloemfontein. The Crusaders looked for all the world like a team destined to retain their Super 14 trophy when they beat the Sharks in Durban the previous week, but the great defensive game of the Cheetahs made them look ordinary.
The Crusaders did have plenty of attacking opportunities, but they were knocked back by the strong-tackling Cheetahs in the tackle and were forced into making mistakes. All the spilled balls prevented them from getting any momentum, and it was the Cheetahs who took their few scoring chances a lot better than their opponents did as Hennie Danniller and Jongi Nokwe rounded off two excellent build-ups in each half.
The Bloemfontein game was not the only one to go the Sharks’ way. Johann Muller’s team might have feared the worst when they were forced to sit through their bye weekend within range of several challenging teams and in grave danger of dropping out of the top four.
At the start of the weekend it was conceivable that the Sharks would be sixth or seventh by Monday, but the Reds joined the Cheetahs in scoring an upset, with the Blues going down on their home turf. The Brumbies’ emotional ride following the tragic death of Shawn MacKay also came to an end as the Hurricanes destroyed them in Wellington.
Even the Stormers could said to have joined in the South African push for Super 14 glory as their hard-fought and well-deserved 18-11 win in Dunedin effectively sounded the final death-knell to any chance of the Highlanders challenging for a top four spot.
The Stormers could be even more useful to the Bulls if they follow up that performance with a win over the Chiefs in Cape Town this coming weekend. It is a result that seems a lot less unlikely than it did before Friday.

WEEKEND RESULTS
Vodacom Cheetahs 20 Crusaders 13
Vodacom Bulls 33 Chiefs 27
Hurricanes 56 Brumbies 7
Blues 24 Reds 31

KOLO TOURE-I AM WHAT I AM BECAUSE OF MY RELIGION

Interview - ‘I am what I am because of my religion’ says Kolo Toure

By Zeeshan Akhtar

As I enter the gates to the Arsenal training headquarters in London Colney, I am taken aback by the quiet and calming atmosphere around the venue. I drive through the security packed entrance, park up and enter the media centre. “I’m here to interview Kolo Toure,” I say to the security officer sitting at reception. “Please make your way to the interview room,” the security officer replies with a broad smile. I make my way to the interview room and am told that Kolo is still training and will come over to speak to me as soon as the squad finish their final training session before the game against in-form Hull City.
I see the Ivorian drive up to the centre and this is soon followed by footsteps outside the door. I embrace Kolo with a firm handshake and an “Assalamu ‘Alaykum” greeting. Kolo is renowned for his pace, strength and athleticism and this is evident from his physical stature. It is a testament to his professionalism and talent that he is the longest serving member in the current Arsenal squad.

Kolo has always been proud of his roots and he joyfully describes his upbringing, his religion and his football development in the Ivory Coast. “Like all African boys, I loved playing football. I was small (in stature), but my dream was to become a footballer. I joined the Ivory Coast Academy in 1995 and we used to play football for 6 hours a day,” Kolo commented. He cites Islam and the encouragement of his parents as instrumental to the success he has enjoyed to date. “One of my friends was a Muslim, his parents were practicing and they would regularly go to the mosque. My father’s friend was an Imam and I started practicing (Islam) with them from the age of 13.”
It is now four seasons since Arsenal last won any silverware and the loss of Mathieu Flamini and Alexander Hleb has led to many critics dismissing Arsenal’s title credentials this year. However, Kolo, with a defiant look, had an equally defiant message to all of these critics. “I think the club is strong and organised. The manager has his plan and we want to win things. If we continue to play well as we are at the moment, we’re confident they will come. We just have to stay focused and keep going, there are plenty of games to come. We’ve definitely learnt from last year and we will work to get trophies.”

I do a lot of work based at home in the Ivory Coast as people are poor out there and a lot of money is needed,” he explains. Arsenal have themselves been working on their ‘in the Community’ scheme, which works with local primary schools to embrace the diversity of Arsenal’s local and global community. Arsenal’s ‘World on Our Doorstep’ initiative celebrates multiculturalism with youngsters in the Borough and draws parallels with the Arsenal team. The Club has recently launched a Premier League funded project which focuses on the most prominent religions present in London. Using Arsenal resources along with support from Kolo Toure and Manu Eboue, Arsenal in the Community is introducing a variety of religious topics in line with the Religious Education Key Stage 2 National Curriculum. This forms part of the Club’s ‘Arsenal For Everyone’ initiative which aims to celebrate diversity and equality in all forms at Arsenal and has been set up as part of the Club’s work in conjunction with ‘Kick It Out’, football’s anti-racism campaign. There was a focus on this initiative on October 18 at the Club’s Premier League fixture against Everton at Emirates Stadium.

Despite such positive work, Islamophobia and racism in football is a current topic of debate after unsavoury scenes across many football grounds, both home and abroad. The case of Middlesbrough striker Mido being subjected to Islamophobic chants by Newcastle supporters in last year’s Tyne-Tees derby a prime example. I asked Kolo’s opinion on this subject and whether he had experienced anything unsavoury or untoward. “I’ve come up against racism in Holland when playing there, but nothing in the Premiership, it’s the best country in the world!”, was his emphatic response.
Kolo’s experiences of football in England are obviously very positive and, in such a physically demanding profession, I ask Kolo how he copes during the blessed month of Ramadan. “The first ten days are tough, but the body gets used to it after that. I don’t fast when playing because it’s dangerous but I make them up afterwards.” Kolo’s religion and profession appear to go hand in hand and so I ask Kolo whether he is aware of a growing Arsenal Muslim fan base. He smiles and says, “Yes, we have lots of Muslim fans and we are particularly aware when we go abroad to other Muslim countries.”

It is clear that faith plays an important role in Kolo’s life but it is certainly something new for his fellow professionals. As the influx of Muslim players from abroad continues, the number of questions from Kolo’s team mates will also grow. Ashley Cole was once asked what had been the strangest thing he had seen in football. His response was, “Kolo praying in the dressing room on his prayer mat.” When I put this to Kolo, he smiled and said it was his duty to show what Islam is to his team mates. “I have to explain my religious beliefs and practice all the time and I give back to my religion through this. I am what I am because of my religion. It changed my life and I am really happy to be a Muslim. We have many Muslim players at the club now – Abou Diaby, Bakary Sagna, and we all go to the mosque to pray together after training.”
It is with this final comment of such clarity that out time ends. As Kolo and I leave the room, we rush into our cars and head to the local mosque for Jum’ah (Friday) prayers. As we are about to leave, Kolo tells me Abou Diaby will meet us there.

As we arrive, Kolo donates a substantial amount of money to the development of the local mosque. He seems happy and content to donate and help people wherever and whenever he can. I get the sense that he feels God has given him the means to look after not only himself, but also the greater Muslim community, and it is with this sense of responsibility that Arsenal’s vice captain chooses to forge his legacy. LIVERPOOLS ARSE SHAVEN

Well. I have packed the suit away in the cupboard. It looks bleak now. Despite Liverpools fans optimism. We needed three points. And I just knew it when I seen Ashavin in the line up.I knew that this ba@#ard will hurt us, and hurt he did. Scoring four past a shoddy Liverpool defense. but what a GAME.I couldn't believe the score line and once again Liverpool scored four and conceded four. Torres was brilliant and so was the underated Ben Ayoun, but no matter how much we say and convince ourselves that it was the match of the season bla bla we came away with a point.Just not good enough.

No dispute about Benitez selection,it was spot on I thought, but we gifted Ashavin the third goal. IL give UGB a SAY on his one Theory.3-2,3-3 4-3.We were done and dusted. 4-4. Sms's were just flowing.

What made it worse is that Chelsea drew and teh MANCS beat POMPEY. And despite so many Liverpool fans pinning their hopes on POMPEY ...the old man GIGGS turned out a master class performance to set up a 2-0 victory which UTD could have won by lots more. Again we see the importance of Scholes and Giggs in killing the game in midfield. The Toppie should have used them in the FA Cup semi.
And once again now all the focus is on Arsenal to rip the MANCS Apart. The question is Will they do it or buckle under the pressure.

THE SHOOBS CORNER

ALL THE WAY FROM THE UK

So it’s going to be an all Blue final at Wembley and congratulations are in order to both Everton and Chelsea. Drogba and the Chelsea squad seem to be on their way to great form and it couldn’t have come at a better time of the season for them. Although a large part of this new found form is down to the new gaffer, it can’t be dismissed as entirely coincidental that Chelsea have looked better since Essien’s return to the squad. Well done to the CFC for despatching the Gooners and reaching the FA Cup final. I made my way to Wembley for the other semi-final and needless to say I am gutted !!! Now, it’s typically round about this time we’ll see all the muppets crawl out of the woodwork and start the slating, weak excuses, jealous remarks and offering their reactive views on how SAF should be managing the team. The truth is no matter how you try to add things up, prior to this weekend, United were two games away from their 12th FA Cup title, we’re not anymore and as a Red that kills me. Granted, the FA Cup is no longer considered as prestigious as it was years ago, but silverware (no matter how big or small) is still silverware. SAF’s team selection for the semi-final fixture was extremely controversial and in the papers this morning he cited a dodgy pitch at Wembley as being the reason behind his decision not to play his first team. Watching Everton play against our reserves on Sunday I can’t help but think that if the likes of Rooney, Ronaldo and Giggsy were on the pitch we would have killed the Toffees, but still, you have to give credit to the United youngsters who held their own against a decent Everton, but ultimately we succumbed to the lottery of a penalty shoot-out. Questions are being asked and excuses being handed out ... Why not play the first team??? Dodgy pitch at Wembley??? Welbeck was brought down??? Mike Riley fell victim to Moyes’ pre-match comments??? Bottom line is that we’re out of the FA Cup but still in with more than a good chance of winning another premier league title and in with a half decent chance at glory in Europe. Let’s not forget that is the work of SAF so too are the numerous titles United have won under him (and not many other teams are fortunate enough to be in the situation we’re in). What’s done is done and it’s time to forget the moaning and whining and get back to business.

Mistakes may have been made, but that’s football, sometimes, the gamble pays off, sometimes it doesn’t. Personally, a big positive I drew from the match was the performances of Vida and Rio. It’s no secret that we wobbled a bit at the back over the last few games but watching Vida and Rio do their thing at the back, I can only describe them both as the consummate professionals any budding centre back can look up to. I think our defensive blip is over. Let’s not forget Newcastle losing to Spurs. Bookies have Newcastle at 4/6 to go down this season and watching Gazza on Match of the Day last night, you’ve got to feel for the Geordies if Newcastle go down. Speaking of going down, it’s all over for Charlton. Their result this weekend ensures that Sean Bartlett’s old club will be playing in the 3rd tier of English football for the first time after a 20 year absence. On the other end, Wolves have confirmed their promotion to the Prem League. Sunderland also edged one step closer to staying in the Prem league by picking up 3 points at the expense of Hull in a relegation dog fight. Lastly, I shared a tube journey last night with a bunch of Toffees who were still lurking around London looking to get pissed.

I stepped on to the train expecting to take a lot of flak from them (I still had on a United jersey), but after a few light-hearted exchanges and some laughs they jumped off and left me with this pearl “Just ensure your mob win the league, coz that lot from Anfield are going to be unbearable if they win it”. Never heard anything more true coming from a scouse !!!

Speech delivered by
Lalit Modi
Chairman & Commissioner
DLF Indian Premier League

At the
Opening Ceremony of Season 2009
Newlands, Cape Town
April 18th 2009

Friends

As I stand here before this excited, committed and sold out crowd in one of crickets most spectacular arenas for our opening day of Season 2009 of the DLF Indian Premier League

I feel joy, humility, pride and gratitude.

The last month has been one of the most exciting and memorable of our lives.

It has also been one of the most joyful - the carnival on Thursday, the visit to the Alexander Sinton School yesterday; the party last night and today’s wonderful cricket, all memories I will cherish forever.

I am humbled by how graciously you, the South African people, have allowed us into your country and your homes; I am humbled by how you fans you have let us into hearts and minds; and I am humbled how readily you have adopted teams and players of the IPL.

I recall the words of an old Buddhist saying:

“the flower that blooms in adversity is the rarest and most beautiful of all”.

We by necessity brought the DLF IPL to South Africa.

And I am proud that we have spread our wings, that we have brought a taste of Modern India to a sports mad country; proud that we are on our way to making the DLF IPL a truly global sports event; proud that we have left a small legacy of contributing R9 million to assist in the education of your young future leaders and sportsmen with our HEAT initiative; and proud that we have in a small way helped to forge greater links between our two great Rainbow nations.

But mostly I am grateful. On behalf of the BCCI, I wish to thank our great friends at the South African Government and Cricket South Africa who have acted so quickly and so brilliantly to make the move happen- it all happened in less than 4 weeks! It seems in this country the difficult happens immediately and the impossible takes a little longer!

Thanks also to the State Associations here, whose wonderful facilities we are all enjoying so much.

From the first day we arrived here I was convinced that the move could be a success, and with each passing day that conviction has grown ever stronger.

The support of our Franchises, media partners and sponsors has been invaluable.

Not once did any of them waiver in their support once the move was announced, so thank you to Sony, WSG, IPLT20.com, DLF, Fly Kingfisher, Hero Honda, Citi and Vodafone for the faith they have all shown.

I would like to thank our partners, IMG, without whose expertise and unwavering commitment we would not be here today.

The IMG team, led by my good friend Andrew Wildblood and his indomitable colleague Peter Griffiths, has been with us on the IPL journey from its inception and I knew when we arrived in South Africa just 25 days ago that if one company could succeed in the unchartered logistical challenge of organising an event of this scale at less than four weeks notice, it was IMG.

Finally I wish to thank Sundar Raman and my colleagues at IPL for their round the clock dedication and hard work.

You have all helped us create sports marketing history by moving the DLF IPL to South Africa so successfully.

I should also mention the role of my old friend Etienne de Villiers and Francois Pienaar, the two newest members of the DLF IPL team.

They have been invaluable in implementing a marketing plan that has explained the IPL to a new audience and generated the excitement we see here today.

If today’s action is anything to go by, all cricket fans are in for a treat over the next 37 days.

I hope that you all enjoy the feast of cricket and entertainment that lies ahead.

I know that by the time I address the audience at the DLF IPL Final on May 24th, we will have made a lasting and positive impression in South Africa.

You certainly have made that on us!

Finally I want to assure the hundreds of millions of cricket fans in India that we have not forgotten you.

We know that you will be watching in your millions, and we look forward to bringing the DLF IPL back home next year.

And now a little something to get your hearts racing again-Let the Games continue!

IPL fan with star quality will be off to Bollywood!

Cape Town, April 16 2009: One lucky South African IPL fan with star quality stands to win a role in a Bollywood movie, R50 000 in cash, a business class trip to India and other prizes in the 2009 tournament’s Miss Bollywood SA competition.

The search for a South African lady with the potential to take Bollywood by storm was announced in Cape Town today by IPL Chairman and Commissioner, Lalit Modi, and Bollywood superstars Shah Rhuk Khan, Shilpa Shetty and Preity Zinta.

“We’re looking for someone who has the star quality to stand out in a crowd, probably without even trying that hard. It’s that special, almost indefinable, quality that makes someone a star more than a beauty queen that we are looking for,” Modi said today.

“IPL matches with their mix of fun and excitement are an excellent environment to identify the kind of person who is a natural stand-out in a big crowd,” said Modi.

“Star searches like this are a really great way to find people who may never even have thought that they have what it takes to really make it big,” said Khan. “The heart of our idea is to search the crowd at IPL matches for someone who has the attitude and appearance that automatically draws the eye. It will be the kind of person who is not necessarily showing off for the camera, but who can mesmerise even total strangers,” he said.

A total of 50 winners will be chosen from the crowds at every one of the eight venues around the country that is to host IPL matches. Winners will be shown on the big screen at every match during the second five-minute break.

There will be one finalist per match, identified with the help of TV producers who will have cameras scanning the crowds. IPL matches are being played in Cape Town, East London, Port Elizabeth, Durban, Bloemfontein, Kimberley, Johannesburg and Pretoria. Tickets to matches are on sale through Computicket.

Photographs of each match winner will be loaded to a section of the IPL web site (
http://www.iplt20.com/) where fans from around the world can cast their vote. Fans casting votes will also be able to participate in a fan competition around Miss Bollywood SA.

Before photographs are uploaded to the web site, each winner will need to verify that she agrees to enter, that her photograph can appear on the web site and that she is at least 18 years old.

One finalist from each venue will be chosen, leaving eight winners to be hosted and feted at The Wanderers in Johannesburg at the final of the IPL 2009 tournament on 24 May. The ultimate winner will be announced during the final.

Theres no atmosphere like the Bull Ring

On Friday myself and the chaps went to the Bull Ring. The atmosphere ofcourse was the atmosphere that the Bull Ring always produces. The game I felt didnt have that byte because of it being a dead rubber but the lads enjoyed it. The fun was added by former Pirates,Wits University and Manning Rangers Footballer,Warren Du Pont. He and his lads were behind us and we had a class time. But as usual the Bull Ring never failed when it came to atmosphere

Been there Done that! We met former Orlando Pirates,Wits,Manning Rangers & Swallows hard man Warren Du Pont.

He was a midfield player he was equally good in defense as well as creating scoring chances and scoring classic long range goals. Varela was an inspirational leader who drove his team to success against Brazil in the 1950 World Cup as well as led his team to the semi-finals in the 1954 World Cup where Uruguay lost to Hungary. Varela did not play in that game. When Brazil took the lead in the 1950 Final Group Game, Varela took the ball from the back of the net and after arguing excessively with the referee about the validity of the goal he took the ball to the centre of the field and shouted to his team “Now it’s time to Win!” and Uruguay under Varela’s leadership, inspiration and influence went on to win the game 2-1.

The defensive midfielder position has become an integral position in the modern game of football. Makelele of France is arguably the greatest advert for this position so much so that many people refer to the Defensive Midfield Position as the “Makelele Role”. Makelele was part of the disappointing French campaign of 2002. However after retiring from International football returned to assist France in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup as well as going all the way to the 2006 Final. Makelele along with Vieira in Central & Defensive Midfield Roles for France were instrumental in their 2006 World Cup campaign where they reached the finals conceding 3 Goals along the way. IS PENALTINHO A BIG MATCH PLAYER

The delighted Alis after the game

The Abus after the game

A worried Azee and Seth at halftime

A packed Nescafe. The Atmosphere was class
It wasnt a game as exciting as yesterday but the question all the owes were debating about is that "Is Penaltinho a big game Player". I can tell you one thing, that goal was worthy of sending your team into the Semi Final. A wonder strike by the arrogant MANC. They score early and I honestly felt that was actually a bad thing for the MANCS becuse they would have to endure a nerve wrecking climax. And Seth and Azee were nervous. Porto had their spells but just couldnt do it. Utd needed to win and Penaltinjos goal was top draw and enough at the end to see them through. Utd are not playing well but they F#4ken getting the results. We wanted Porto to win and they didnt. Rolando and Lopez came agonisingly close at the end but the question on the readers lips and certainly ABRS LIPS, Is PENALTINO A BIG MATCH PLAYER?
To the MANCS well the Emirates is not Porto and Im sure we will be treated to a spectacle.Arsenal were sublime and they are peaking at the right time. Great win against Villareal and thats what we expected. Two cracker jack semis. Chelsea and Barcelona and Arsenal and Man Utd. Could we be in store for a repeat of last years Final.
But Utd are now the only English team to win at Porto
The atmosphere at Nescafe was sublime and it was packed as it was for the Final last year. The Semis will go down
